Hi, my dog is 13 and is having more and more accidents. I've tried putting newspaper down and he won't pee on it. I am going to try wee wee pads - though i think i've tried in the past.

He does get walked 3-4x a day..not sure if its not enough for him OR if he is spiteful. anyway its making my house smell..

i've done some researching and read about "belly bands" are these like diapers for dogs? have u tried them? where to order?

thanx for any suggestions.

i have a miniature poodle about 12 pounds!

he just had a blood work up...

this is not new with him - its just getting worse - he is also getting older

I used belly bands some with my geriatric dog before he passed away. First, your dog is not being spiteful. Dogs don't have it in them to be spiteful. One of the things that makes their companionship so wonderful.

You can put a sanitary pad (size appropriate for your dog) inside the belly band. Change these frequently to help cut down on odors and skin irritation.

My dog was 14 1/2 when he passed. We had gotten an unhousetrained adult about a year before he passed. Since we were walking her frequently, we took our old guy too. Where 4 walks a day had worked for years and years, in his golden years we found that 5-6 walks a day cut out 95% his accidents in the house. Old dogs have weaker muscles and therefore, weaker bladders. Same as for many old folks ;). Adding an extra walk or two may solve your problems.

UTIs can come on quickly, so if this is a sudden change, it would be worth having the urine tested. Good luck.

Oh and for odors, clean the places with an enzymatic pet cleaner like Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle.

Added: where to order: Drs. Foster and Smith have good options. You can also find some online vendors as well.

This online vendor does excellent work and can custom-make belly bands. Not listed on the site, but I've seen her work-first rate:

(Note: my mom made my dog's belly bands. If you can sew, it isn't difficult.)

I've also done some reading on them. From what I understand, they are "bands" that secure a sanitary pad around the boy dog. That way if he pees, it's covered (no pun intended:goodvibes). My 14 yr old yorkie was having the same issue, but lately he's been good (knock on wood). I found some sites that sold them, but for the most part I think they were handmade (not mass produced). Perhaps you could find some on Etsy?

My dog is 13, and she needs to be taken outside much more frequently than she did a year or two ago. She has to go out at least six times per day and often more, and there's no underlying problem (she's had blood work as well).

Our pug is 13 years old and has had bladder problems most of his life. We use these --> http://www.bestdogdiapers.com/ with a diaper inside of it. You can also use a maxi pad. We haven't had any problems with them. In fact, my pug is the one with the red diaper on in the slide show at that website. :goodvibes

We used those diapers for my dog as he got older. He lived to be 17 and was relatively healthy except for declining vision and bladder control.

I just sewed mine. I got those fat quarters of fabric they sell at JoAnn Fabrics or even WalMart. I folded the fabric, sewed around the fabric, then sewed on velcro.
That's for my medium sized dog. It was pretty quick and easy and fit him perfectly. If he would have been larger, the fat quarter wouldn't have worked.

I made several for him because he has to wear his belly band all the time.
I buy equate brand feminine pads at WalMart, and they work great.

The belly bands I made wash great in the washing machine, too.
My dog doesn't mind wearing them at all.

You might check for Cushings Disease.

As for the belly bands, they didn't fit my dog very well so I bought disposable diapers made for dogs. You can buy them much cheaper from Pet Edge online than you can from any of the pet supply stores.

I use belly bands on my 2 male chihuahuas all the time. I make my own and close them with velcro. I put in a sanitary napkin cut in half. They just like to mark their territory.
If it rains they refuse to go outside. Bellybands are the best.

Very good advice. Cushing's is often overlooked with standard blood work. it requires specialized testing to detect. Is he drinking more water than usual? Has he begun to have a "pot-bellied" appearance? Has his hair thinned or has he begun to have skin problems? All of these are symptoms of Cushing's.

Only drinking more...but i think were gonna bring him to see the vet on saturday - also he seems to have some trouble getting to his feet after lying down.....thanks for all the suggestions.

Hind leg weakness, which my dog has, is also a possible symptom of Cushings. My dog was also ravenous. Couldn't get enough to eat. Now that she is on meds she is better. Have your doc check into Cushings if possible. Our dog was hard to diagnose and after the usual tests she required a different test from the University of TN which did lead to the diagnosis. Hopefully the medication she is on now will give her a better quality of life.

Good luck to you and your doggie.

the same thing happened to our 12 YO in the last few weeks. she had 2 accidents overnight and actually slept in her pee. she's been to the vet 2 times and he said she's fine--just getting old. he's given her a prescription to tighten her sphincter. DH goes back to work next week from his layoff, so she will be home alone for 9 hours a day. if she starts having accidents in the house during the day, we'll have to look into the diapers.

With all due respect, she WILL have accidents being alone and unable to go out for 9 hours...could you hold your urine for 9 hours (not counting sleeping time)? Neither can a pup.

For the two years before my 12 year old Lab passed, she had accidents in the house...both kinds. Like every 2-3 months, then every 2-3 weeks. The vet told us her spine was fusing, becoming one long bone, which is why she had trouble going up and down stairs and wouldn't get on the furniture anymore.

But it also was pinching her nerves that controlled the bladder and sphincter, because the nerves pass like a rope through the last vertebrae, and that vertebrae was slowly closing onto itself.

It was a matter of time, the vet said. In the end, we had to put her down because we couldn't fly her from Germany to the US (vet's wouldn't sign the papers, said it was more humane to put her down than put her through the trip) but what they were telling us was that her time was near, because the fusing spine would apparently make it very hard for her to get up and lay down.

I never tried a pad, just sort of cleaned it up, but you might look into x rays to see if anything is wrong. They have meds for older female dogs but the vet in my dog's case, said it wouldn't work because her nerves were being squeezed and meds wouldn't fix that.

I'm sorry, I guess I don't have a solution here....now that I read my post....
