Thinking about switching from liquid foundation to BM after seeing it on several people and loving how it looked. I'm very fair and have combo skin. I'm a little concerned it may not look as good on my very fair skin as it did on them (they both a beautiful tanned skin). Looking at the starter kit but before investing $50 bucks was looking for some feedback.

Anyone use this, likes/dislikes?

I had seen Bare Minerals several times on QVC and had a friend that used it and it looked fabulous on her. I found that they have it at Ulta so I went to try it. It looked horrible on me, it looked way too powdery. I would try before you buy or buy it from QVC as they have an absolutely hassle free return policy. If you go to try it, make sure your skin is moisturized extra well. I think this may have been part of the problem when I tried it.

The best mineral powder foundation I have used is Elizabeth Arden. Super pricey, but the absolute best. I use Physicians Formula powder foundation now. It doesn't cover as well, but its very easy to apply, it never looks bad and its super cheap and lasts for months.

L'Oreal had a product called Bare Naturelle that I used for many years and LOVED. They actually discontinued it and when I had to find a replacement I ended up trying other products besides mineral powders. I was surprised how differently the cream compact I'm now using covered compared to the powder. I have found that something "moister" actually looks way better on my ageing skin than powder, which settled into and accentuated ever imperfection. (I'd started using the minerals 10 or so years ago and the changes in my complexion kind of "crept up".) I'm not trying to discourage you from powdered minerals, but I wouldn't invest in anything too substantially until you're sure you like it.

One thing I will add about mineral powder is that if you are prone to break-outs, they are VERY good for that as I always found them to be non-reactive and easy to remove, although the coverage was excellent.

I used it at the recommendation of my dermatologist. It didn't work for me at all, but I have rosacea. It looked good at first, but within an hour the redness came through, now matter how much calming cream, primer, mineral foundation, and finishing powder I used.

I am very fair and tried Bare Minerals a couple of years ago. It looked absolutely horrible on me, and no matter how little I used and how much I buffed it in, I looked like I took a face plant into a dish of powder.

What product did you end up going to? I've used BM for years but now that I'm older I want to try a light cream for winter. I live in the humid south and BM matte is perfect for summer but in the winter I layer it with ultra matte primer to keep my dry skin from looking wrinkly with the powder foundations, though for me the color match is perfect for BM matte powder in medium beige. I'm early 40s with combo skin, most of my aging is near my eye area and forehead, but I get acne in my t zone in summer.

I have used Bare Minerals for many years. I think it looks very good on me. I have fair to medium skin with rosacea. It is the only thing that really blocks the redness. I also use a Chanel liquid foundation here and there when I want a different look. It is probably a smidge better looking than the Bare Minerals.

Do you have a Bare Minerals store near you or a place you can go to have them do it for you? That's the best thing to try. Oh, I also am in my 50s and have dry skin and it's no more "cakey" than my liquid foundations.

I tried Bare Minerals. It looked great. I stopped using it though because it caused breakouts. I do not have acne prone skin but when I used bm I never had clear skin. An esthetician that I know said that happens all a lot with mineral makeup. I have friends that swear by younique and NARS Good luck your search!

Keep in mind I'm a "drugstore makeup" person - I didn't try a lot of high-end stuff and there may be a better alternative for you. But I settled on Cover Girl Simply Ageless. It's got a ribbon of Olay serum running through it that blends as you apply and it glides on really well without being greasy or shiny. I also like that you can build the coverage in spots, just like with mineral powder. It's not precisely a matte finish, but it's not super-dewy either; a quick dusting of setting powder over-top give me the finish I'm looking for. Not sure what your skin tone is but a lot of the Cover Girl products seem really orange or pink to me - I use #215 (natural ivory) which is "cooler".

I have used Bare Minerals for 10 years now. Up until last year I just wore the powder foundation, but now I switched to their complexion rescue (like a BB cream) and then just put a little of the powder on as a finish. I second the recommendation of going to a store to try it if you can.

LOL!!!!

Does anyone have recommendations for us fair skinned people?

I use the BM for a long time and it seems like it takes so much more to cover. Has anyone tried the spray on foundation?

I've been using BM for years now. what I've found, especially in the winter is that it's all about the Prime Time (primer) to avoid that powdery look.

I lean more toward the fair side, than the medium and I haven't had an issue looking powdery. They have a new liquid formula too... It's worth looking into.

Good luck whatever you try!

I really love the IT CC cream in the lightest shade. I am a self proclaimed Pale Princess and it's fantastic - good coverage but not heavy. Very moisturizing yet not oily. I also like the Maybelline Fit Me Dewey and foundation in the lightest shade.

The Bare Minerals did NOT work for me - much too drying and settled in creases/pores. Very unattractive look. I'm in my late 20s and have dry skin; I keep hoping mineral foundation will work for me, but it just doesn't. My mom tried it (she's 60) and HATED how it settled into her lines. And, it does seem to take forever to blend out. UGH.

I am certainly not disputing your findings, I just think it's interesting how the same product can work so differently for different people. I tend to take a while to find what I like and try a lot of different things (be it makeup, clothing, foods, medications etc.) but when I find the winner, I'll stick with it forever.

Thanks everyone for all the great replies. I'm going to try it in a store first, if it doesn't work I've written down some of your other recommendations:)

Same with me.

I see people say they have these issues with BM and I'm like WHAT???

But to each their own. I hate avocados dislike puppies so what do I know? :rotfl:

Definitely make sure they use the primer first. I find the application to be much different without it.

I know! I have *the* dryest skin on earth. It's bad. And I'm old now, to boot!! It's just never been cakey. I do use the kabuki brush and I don't use a heavy hand with it. I've gotten a lot of compliments on my skin over the years. I don't use a primer either because my skin is so sensitive.

I use BM Matte in Fairly Light. I have middle-aged combo skin. I like it ok. It doesn't last the day, but then no makeup does with me. I'm not the type to carry makeup with me and reapply, though, so I just carry on.

ETA I have senstive skin and their primer irritated my skin. That could be part of the problem with staying power.

I have to use moisturizer first, and when my skin in dryer in winter sometimes I get that powdery look. I should try their liquid. I've tried clinique because that brand works well with my sensitive skin, but they don't have a shade that works for me. I looked like a bad spray tan or a ghost.
