Baby Clothes: Height vs Weight

And I thought finding clothes for me was hard! I'm trying to fill out the closet for the next size while there's some good back to school sales going on.

What is more important to fit, the length or weight guidelines on the size charts? I have a few pairs of Children's Place pants in the 12 month size that the boys just swim in (even with the waist cinched), but when I look at the size chart, they should be in 18 months for weight and almost 24 months for height! So I know that can't be right.

Any advice, especially when buying at a store I don't have clothes from already?

To be honest it is really tough. Each brand has its own measurements for each size. Then compare the measurements to your child....and well its tough. It will take some time and once the little ones slow down in growth it will be easier.

Over the years I have learned that some things are OK to buy ahead of time. Things like underwear, sweatshirts, t-shirts or jeans. Items that can be worn year round or can be worn for longer periods of time. Kids are fine with a sweatshirt that may be a little large for a while. On the other hand I never buy shoes ahead of time. I cannot even begin to guess how much feet will grow.

I find the weight totally off at Children's Place. DS is usually right at the weight limit (or over) and the clothes just begin to fit. DS was small (still is in the 25% for weight) and always fit exactly the age with the clothes size, ex) 12months=12months, 24month=2T.

I find that Walmart, (Garanimals/Healthtex) fits a bit big too. Target is usually right on, as is JC Penney. One of the only stores that fits so terribly small is Disney Store! I've been buying 4T shirts for DS.

i feel your pain. my son will be 8 months on the 15th. he's in the 75% for weight and 50% for height. at 6 months he was 19lbs, 27 inches. he's mostly in 12 month clothing. there's a few 9-12 months he's still wearing.

i don't buy at children's place because their sizes are all wrong. gymboree also has weird sizes. says he should be in 18 month clothing. mom bought thomas a swim shirt at the disney store and it's an xs. the fit is perfect, but the same size in the swim trunks were HUGE on him.

i do love geranimals at walmart. i think he's still wearing 2 6-9 month onesies of theirs and can probably last another month or so in it. i especially love the geranimals because they aren't expensive! our walmart is re-vamping it's store, so earlier this summer they had all the t-shirts for $1. :woohoo::banana::banana::banana: he has shirts up to 5t now! lol

i'm wondering why baby/kid's clothes makers haven't adjusted their sizes, especially with all the big babies being born! lol

Well, for me, I always bought by height. My kids are thin, especially DS#1. There could be a 2-3 size difference between their height and weight. At one time DS#1 wore a size 5 by height and a 3T by weight. Nope, that is not supposed to be 5T; that's how big the difference is.

Basically, I'd buy the one your child fits larger. If they've outgrown the weight but not the height, shop by weight. If they are like my kids and outgrow the height before they even reach the weight, buy by height.

You may also find that certain brands fit your kids better than others. Carters runs smaller weights for the same sizes, so they always looked better on my kids. Oshkosh runs a different weight and height--which always translated to about a 1/2 size off (instead of an 8 it's really a 8 1/2). Oshkosh is the only shorts DS#1 and DS#2 can wear easily. I buy one size smaller with adjustable waists. They barely fit in length, but do, and fit well everywhere else.

Kids clothing is a pain! I'm convinced that my DS must have the shortest legs in the universe. He's 26 months and has pants every size from 12 months to 3T that fit him right now. Almost everything needs to have cuffs rolled up to fit him.
