My straightener has an automatic shutoff. If it is not used for a length of time it turns off. My kids tend to leave it on all the time so I feel better knowing it will shut itself off.
I once left the old fashioned curling iron on all day, it was sitting on a wood desk and it didn't do any damage.
I left my gas grill on all night long- then I remember while I was out the next day. I had to be at 2 places before I could get home. I don't even remember what was said in the meetings because all I was thinking was- Is my house gone?
Surprisingly - nothing at all happened. The grill even had some propane left in it.
Hope for the best!
As much as I love my CHI, this is the one thing I just don't understand about it. Why doesn't it have an automatic shut off? I can't tell you the number of times I've left the house, just to come back to check whether my daughter or I have left it on.
Think about where you would have left it. Is it on a counter away from towels or anything flamable? What kind of counter top is it? Would laminate burn? Granite or corian won't.
In general, a CHI is a professional tool--hence the price. So, a CHI would remain on all day in a shop. If it turned off in an hour, it would be a pain for a stylist.
No promises that it will not burn your house down but they are made to stay on all day long.
I just asked my hair stylist how many hours she leaves hers on every day. She said about eight to ten hours. I know she keeps hers in a little metal holder by her station but I think you will be OK.
All was fine. No burns! I bought a hot plate for her to use when she got it. One of those ones you put on the table when you want to put a hot dish on it. WHEW!
I do not know why they do not have auto shut off's. They do not need to be on all day at a salon because they heat up in a minute, no pre-heat time required on these things.
This may be a bit difficult to retrofit into an existing home but when I had my last two homes built, I put a wall-switch-controlled electrical outlet in the kids bathroom BUT instead of a normal "light" switch to control whether electricity was running to the outlet or not, I used a Timer Wall Switch instead, something LIKE the one pictured here:
The most my kids can run power to that outlet for is 15 minutes unless they reset the timer. When the time runs out, power to the outlet is cut off and anything plugged into it goes off as well due to the loss of electrical power.
Here's the kicker: We ended up having four sons! (and none have long hair needing curling -- so far) In fact, now that DS14 is shaving with a rechargeable electric razor, I might be switching that timer out with a regular wall switch because his razor needs a few hours of electricity to fully recharge.
