AP Discounts with only child's AP?

I'm thinking of ways to save $ and wondering...can a family receive all the regular AP discounts on rooms and restaurants, etc...if only one of their children has an AP? We would not be planning more than one trip to WDW a year, so AP's for the entire family wouldn't make sense. Since a child's AP costs less than an adults, could we get an AP only for our child without an adult in the family having one, and still get all the great discounts? Does this idea make any sense?

It makes some sense but you said you're not planning more than one trip a year. If you make the following years trip in 11 months you already have your passes. If the parents buy the passes you might take a parents only trip (assuming you catch an airline sale AP hotel rates). I doubt the kids can go without you.

Another thing to consider, and I would check this out with CRO - the reservation may have to be in the name of the passholder. A child under 18 cannot make reservations, so this wouldn't work. I would double-check on this before going forward with your plan.

This will work, at least it did in 1999. We take my grandson with us so we buy him an AP. When my daughter went she booked her room at the AP rate and told the CM that her son was the AP holder (he was 5 then). They said as long as a member of your party has an AP you quality. No problem. So unless something changed since then this is doable. Afterall my grandson even got a post card a few weeks ago for a discounted rate (BTW he's only 7).

It may have worked in 1999, but word out of CRO last year was that the ressie name had to be the AP holder. And you must be 18 years old to get a ressie in your name.
