Anyone Request a Microwave for Medical Reasons?

Hi, I learned that WDW resorts will supply a microwave for medical reasons. Does anybody know if multiple life-threatening food allergies count? We're staying at a Value Resort and not on the DP. What is the process?

Thank you

I would call and ask. Certainly if you have a medical condition that would require that you eat only certain foods I can't imagine they would give you much trouble.

Similiar - we get a free fridge for insuiln - no questions asked. So I would think a micro would be the same.

Hopefully Disney will be able to get you the microwave for your room. Just in case something goes awry with that, there are microwaves in all the food courts as well. I don't know if that would end up working for you, but it is there just in case.

Not knowing the age the person with food allergies and their needs, etc. I will also throw out there that if the allergies are complicated and/or unusual you might try to work with the value resort chef before you arrive. WDW has a new special needs food office. I have found the chefs at the resort hotels to often be the equals of the ones at the WDW restaurants in terms of their knowledge of food allergies and ability to make something off the menu that my son can eat.

My younger so is anaphylactic to peanuts/nuts/shellfish and also a type 1 diabetic and he would probably not want to eat microwaved food that we brought from home if he could get something from the chef. He is older though - certainly a baby/toddler wouldn't much know the difference!:thumbsup2

I have an update.

I called today, and after the CM checked with special services, she arranged to have a microwave in our room at Pop.

I explained that my 3 year-old daughter has multiple, anaphylactic food allergies. She has had serious reactions to cross-contamination. I explained she ate crackers without eggs in them that were made in a factory where eggs were a possible cross-contaminate. She severely reacted. I had talked to special diets and the chefs, and they just, as any restaurant is, limited in how much they can protect against that severity of food allergy. At home, we don't eat out because the risk is so great.

They agreed a microwave was sensible and medically valid.

I had talked to the chef at Pop Century and was impressed. At the same time, all it takes is a small, residue of eggs, and I most likely will have an anaphylactic reaction in a 3 year-old with asthma, which increases the likelihood of a fatal reaction. We probably will still do a few, carefully selected treats, like Mickey Mouse waffles, very carefully prepared. But we've reduced our risk in not having to rely so much on restaurants with all their inherent risks to feed my daughter.

Here's to a safe, first visit.

I'm glad you got the microwave. With a 3 year old they are picky but usually limited in what the enjoy eating (as opposed to an adult who would prefer a fancy meal over chicken nuggets usually).

I have had the resort chefs offer to prepare a boxed lunch for my son to take to the parks that we could pick up in the morning before we head over. You could ask about that. He is touch allergic to peanuts so we also avoid the may contains and so forth and I find the chefs to be very careful about the cleanliness of the pans and prep area. We did visit WDW before he had the food allergies and diabetes but now we go almost every year (if not multiple times a year including the Disney cruise) because it is one place we can vacation where we feel safe to let him eat.

If you can track down Chef TJ (last seen at the Poly working for O'Hana's I think) - he is the most awesome chef on the property for those with allergies (he used to be at Boma). He is worth the trip if you can manage to find him and make sure he is working the night of your ressie (tall order I know!).

I have had excellent service at most places but I find that it REALLY depends on the CHEF that you get that particular meal. Some are phenomenal and some are very good and a few I did not trust - but that is very few. Chef TJ I'd love to wrap up in a box and take him home with me - he is just incredible and my son still talks about him and the food he made.

Have fun!
