Anyone dye their own hair and then highlight it as well??

I recently lost my job. I have been getting my hair coloured a light brown and then having foils applied. I love it but it costs $140 every two months, which I can't afford right now. I'm wondering if anyone has dyed their hair and then highlighted it...or if I'm just playing with fire if I try that. The gray is starting to come through so I have to figure out something to do on my own or a way to afford to get it done again.

Thanks!

I have dyed my hair with good results as long as I didn't stray very far from my natural color. Hightlights, on the other hand, is a whole different story. It was pretty...it was quite orange:scared1: Thank goodness that was about a month before Halloween so it kinda went with a fall theme:lmao: Good luck!

I've done both myself, it's not that hard. I wouldn't attempt foiling on my own, the cap method is pretty easy though. I would suggest having an extra person to help pull your hair through the cap, your arms can get pretty tired if you do your whole head plus it's hard to see the back. You can do a test strand to figure out how long it will take to get the color you want.

I always figure that if I end up hating the highlights, it's an easy fix to color over them to get back to the base color.

I color my own hair w/Preference by L'Oreal, and also add my own highlights during the summer. It's worked out pretty well for me.

I stopped dying it. I was getting the foil highlights and frankly I cannot afford that kinda moolah for hair so I bought the box and did that. I mean I used to use "the box" for many years when I was younger.
It was OK.

I then decided to dye it to my natural color and did that. So far so good.
I figured since I am not grey yet I should take advantage of the savings.:rotfl:

I do the same thing as you, foils with color. My roots were getting bad and I didn't need a cut so I colored with the box. It was a little stark at first but as the color fades a little the highlights will start to show again. I like it and it was a heck of a lot cheaper than the salon. I think I will continue to alternate between the salon and the box. I won't highlight with a box, my hair likes to pull orange.

I have done them myself and have been happy. My soon to be DIL is an instructor at a beauty school and they do a really good job for not very much money too.

I get my hair highlighted at a beauty school once a year- my hair is LONG- mid back- and it costs me about 90 bucks or so. I color my own hair as needed when my roots show- what is that, every 8 weeks or so? I just use the Feria kit. Like others have said, once your hair fades your highlights show through- my highlights still look great from last April- it's just that they have grown out enough that they need redone. I figure $90 a year on my hair isn't bad- when my maintenance is only $10 every 2 months or so.

I've done mine several times and always seem to get in abit of a mess. Last time i dyed the carpet, toilet seat and splattered some on the wall....so now i am banned and sent to the hairdressers:rotfl:

Been dying mine for 10 years now, and I use the Box.:thumbsup2 Garnier Frutose, green box.:confused3

I dye my own and would love to high-light but I make a mess every time I try. (See my tags).

I have dark hair and lots of gray so I have to color every three weeks or so. Even if I have it done at the salon I need it again that soon. It would cost my a fortune to have it high-lighted every time I color. If anyone has a fool-proof way of high-lighting please let me know.

I highlight my own with foils (obviously I only do the top of my hair and front) I use a Highlighting "Frosting" kit specifically made for dark brown hair. If I don't buy the kind for DARK brown hair, it doesn't lift enough and turns orange. if you natural color is dark, you must buy one that says "best for dark brown or black hair. I have chunky streaks and people always ask me where I get my hair done.

I tried something that worked for me while I'm preggo (since they say highlights are ok...but not dying to avoid seeping into the scalp)
I had one of those brushes from a previous 'highlighting kit'... (although I assume anything similiar will work)
and bought 2 different boxes of hair color....dark brown and a reddish blonde...
I just took turns with the brush streaking every other strand as I saw in the mirror and guessing on the back.... Risky I know...lol, but I've done it about 3 times over the past 9 months...and it's worked great for me :)

I have used the L'Oreal Colour Experte and have had great results.

Sorry you lost your job. That stinks.

I use the above as well. I was spending mega bucks on highlights. Colour Experte is just as good (or better in some cases) than what I got in a salon. I only use the highlights out of the kit. For in between I use a golden brown root touch up kit. It blends the highlights in really well. I actually highlight/color my hair a lot less than when I was going to the salon. And my hair is in better shape for it. Not expensive. Not messy. Quick. I'm happy. My wallet is happy. :)

You can do it!

I'll have to give it a try, thanks. I think I did try it in the summer and my hair turned an orangey colour, so I think that's why I'm concerned.

For anyone who uses the L'oreal, can you tell me which kit you use...I'd like to see what everyone uses. My natural colour is light brown and I have a couple different foil colours in it right now, one a little lighter brown and one blonde. I used to just highlight my hair at home and it worked well...I found a kit that didn't cause my hair to go orange and stuck with it for years. But I have more and more gray coming in and the highlights alone just aren't covering it up.

Thanks guys!

When I was using the L'Oreal Colour Experte I was using Cherry Cordial and liked it. I stopped doing the highlights because I was tired of them but may start to do it again in the summer.

I use the, "Almond Rocca, light brown - 6.0".

Before I found the color for me, I had some brassiness too. I used a product called, "Shimmer Lights". It really toned it down. It also brightens highlights. I really like this product. You can get it at a Sally Beauty store. It was about $6.50 for a bottle a good while ago. (Haven't had to use it.) You may be able to find it elsewhere, but the Sally Beauty employees are really helpful and will tell you which Shimmer Lights would be best for you. I think there are several (for different hair colors). The bottle I have is called original and the bottle is purple. It's a conditioning shampoo (and the shampoo is as purple as the bottle). Good stuff to have on hand! :)

HTH! :) :goodvibes

I use Shimmer Lights too! :) My hair is long, though, and I have to buy 2 boxes of Colour Experte.

Since I can't see the back of my head I ask my 16yo dd to do it for me. She does a great job. To the OP of this thread, getting someone to help you might be a good idea if you aren't so sure.

GL!
