Kind of a randomn question. My fiancee and I are getting married this May and are moving into a home with a backyard. Currentely we've been living in a small apartment outside Manhattan so having a big dog wasn't an option. We've had a mini dachshund now, but have always wanted a guard dog. I really would like to buy a german shepherd when we move into the new home but am unsure how they would interact. My dachshund has a bit of a jealous side when we show affection to other dogs, but I'm hoping with a puppy she'll be okay. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

Yeah I would guess that with a puppy it will kind of grow up with the wiener dog and they'll be best buddies even when the german shepard gets big enough to eat him.

We got a Shepherd/Husky mix puppy a few of years ago. Our doxie adjusted fine, and they got along well. We did have a problem as the puppy got larger - she would play too roughly with the doxie and I was concerned that she would end up injuring Bailey's back. Fortunately, I was able to find the puppy another good home so it all worked out.

Should be A-ok if you get the GS as a puppy. If your doxie is a female I would get a male GS. They will tend to get along better than 2 females.

I have a german sherpard and a doxin. I got the german sherpard at age 4 and have had the doxin since puppy. The doxin was 3 when we got the shepard. The sherpard wants no trouble and will let the doxin take his toys out of his mouth. Needless to say the doxin is the boss. I would get it as a puppy and make the doxin the dominent dog.

have always wanted a guard dog
I would caution that - unless you own a junk yard, you probably don't want a "guard dog". German Shepherds instinctively know the difference between friend and foe and will protect you and your home, but if you want to own one, you must take measures to keep the dog friendly and well socialized. Believe me, you don't want to live with any dog that's a menace.

With that said, a well socialized, good tempered GSD will get along well with other animals. This was my dog Cody cuddling up to a new little friend who'd joined our household that very day. Does he look mean?

Good luck. Try looking at GSD Rescue organizations in your area. They will know what dogs are good with other dogs if you want to be certain. paw:

I have both as well, along with a husky/malamute mix and they all get along great! One thing you may be concerned about is food/treats. Establish early whose bowl belongs to who and there shouldn't be a prolblem!

My sister has a GS and a cocker spaniel. They get along fine. The GS is the older dog, and so patient with the rambunctious cocker pup.

My uncle and his wife have these two breeds and no problems. The Dachsund, Shiloh, was "inherited" after his MIL passed away and 2 years ago he decided he wanted a German Shepherd, Gretta. Shiloh wasn't too happy and would snap at the puppy. . but even as a puppy she had some size and could hold her own, but she did defer to Shiloh, LOL. It's hysterical to see them both now, full grown German Shepherd taking orders from Alpha-Dog Dachsund.

They just let Shiloh *demand* to be left alone. . . her snapping never hurt the puppy, but was enough for the puppy to learn who was in charge, LOL. The two dogs really worked things out themselves. It's funny to watch though - Gretta will stand over Shiloh and bump her around with her paws, not letting her out from under her. But in 2 years she's never ever tried to hurt the smaller dog.

I have 3 Doxies, a Shep. Mix, a Lab Mix, and a Great Dane......The doxies soooooooo rule our house..........One of my doxies chased my Great Dane off of the bed one night :rotfl2: Even if you get a adult dog, make sure that it is well socialized, our Great Dane is a good "Guard Dog" but sweet with other animals and people who are supposed to be there. I dont think you will have any problems

ETA I know you want a GS but used my GD as size comparison

don't have any advice, but I think you'll be fine! My friend has 5 dogs, all different sizes, and they all get along fine! Most likely, your dachshund will be the "pack leader" since she's older and will set the pup straight if he gets too feisty ;)

We have doxies and had german shepherd (Scooter) and a shepherd/lab mix (Katie). The bigger dogs never once tried to hurt the smaller dogs. The only time Katie would get rough was when she thought they were playing with each other a bit to rough. She would walk over and take her nose and nudge them. As if she was telling them to calm down.
