January 2019 -Everyone needs deadlines! Diet & Fitness monthly W.I.S.H chat

So I weighed myself for the first time in weeks/months and I am up to 153.
That is just about my GOAL weight! Trade ya!!! :P

Today's topic... fats... hmm... they are delicious! :D I find that just watching my calories has the tragic effect of limiting the fats in my diet... not too many mozzarella sticks fit into a calorie-restricted plan. I find when I'm being good and tracking closely that my fat intake is usually a bit below the recommended daily grams, so yes, I really SHOULD add a fish oil supplement... but my one true vice is diet cola, and OMW, the fish-burps are the WORST!!!

Avocados are delicious, of course, and I like salmon and try to have some whenever I am somewhere where it's on the menu (and not swimming in sauce,) but H *hates* all seafood, like will puke if he smells it *hates,* so it's not something I can cook at home very often now that he is retired. I do/did like the Gortons filets where you just microwaved them for about 5 minutes, about 100 calories for 3ish ounces, lots of protein... but a problem now that he is home so much. I'm also totally on the cheese bandwagon, though! Today I tried Laughing Cow Light spread, and it wasn't awful, but I'm not giving up my Cheddar and Colby for nothin'!!!

And a belated woohoo for yesterday, I *FINALLY* finished up the lap blanket set I've been making and got the whole care package boxed up, addressed, and ready to mail tomorrow. Woohoo! There was just the tiniest little bit of yarn left, so I balled that up tight and doused it in catnip and that's been keeping my usually-outdoorsy-but-it's-been-snowy-here-cat entertained while he spends more time that usual indoors. Oh, and I got my dental work all taken care of. woohoo!

And as for tracking... right now it's the scale until I get going enough that I can actually tell anything is changing. That said, this week the scale was up a little, lots of factors going on there, so I'm not worried about it, but it was a bit disheartening.

I have a new accountability buddy! My 15-year-old, beautiful-as-an-angel daughter was fussy about her "belly flub" the last couple of days and asked me to help her... so I am. And by that I mean I measured her height and weight, plugged it into sparkpeople and proved to her that they recommend she lose ZERO pounds and MAINTAIN her current weight. Then we talked about the difference between "toning" and "dieting" and we tracked everything she had eaten today and planned her dinner accordingly (we actually had to ADD pudding to get her up to her recommended calorie range.) I'm proud of us, because I was experimenting with all sorts of unhealthy options when I was her age (bulimia, dexitrim, anorexia, etc... and like her, I was a healthy weight, but thought I should be skin-and-bones.) I'm glad that she feels comfortable talking to me, and is willing to hear that she is wonderful how she is, and that we certainly CAN target her abs through exercise if that's what she wants, but that skipping meals is absolutely NOT an option. We bought lots of healthy-ish snacks and she divided them all up into 100-calorie portions she can grab for snacktime or lunch boxes (she wants to pack because school meals are gross here, but also it helps with tracking so I know she is getting enough nutrition.) But knowing that I have to kind of keep an eye on her so that she gets enough and doesn't starve herself means that I may as well be good about my own tracking, too...

Meanwhile, DD11 is tiny and at her last visit the doctor recommended adding nutrition shakes for the time being... so here we are... me trying to lose, DD15 trying to maintain-but-tone, and DD11 whining that she has to drink chocolate milk every night before bed. What a crazy bunch we are!!!

I went over my calories yesterday. About 300 calories. I am ok about it to be honest but... I am eating too much bread lately

Loved all your thoughts on fat - I should be eating little more of the good fat myself. I love fish, I should cook it more often

House hunting and selling my own home is draining me. It is so tiring and it takes all of my thoughts and energy!

Ok. For a long time I avoided fats. They were bad. If you ate fat you’d be fat was the message. Meanwhile I kept getting bigger and bigger.

It definitely seems cyclic! First fats are bad, then carbs, then certain fats, then sugar...

I'm all for balance and moderation!

Thanks so much for running this thread in spite of being so busy!

Happy Friday everyone.

I'm having my last Starbucks' breakfast this morning, as the Whole Life Challenge finally starts tomorrow. I did clear some stuff out of the fridge last night, but there is still more to do... and I haven't gotten in to the pantry at all yet. The only have-to-do this weekend is to get my car emissions test and tabs renewed, so I've got plenty of time to tackle the kitchen and at least one closet.

I've got to clear out and organize my home and my brain... and there's a powerful full moon total lunar eclipse this weekend that should help blow everything out and set things right.

This is the end goal, for this weekend's activities!

Going out for lunch today since nasty weather is coming in this weekend and we’ll be housebound until Monday-when they’re predicting wind chill temps in negative numbers.

It’s a good weekend to start clearing things out in our basement. I debate keeping things for the yard sale I never seem to have or just donate to Goodwill. But I have to get started. I just have too much stuff!

Then we’ll relax and watch football Sunday!

Have a great weekend everyone!

I don't know about you, but I'm not really looking forward to our weather this weekend. When it gets cold and snowy outside, I tend to curl up inside with lots of blankets and movies or books. But then I'm not being active and I usually eat more. So I'm hoping I can keep the momentum going with my workouts and try to stay on track with my eating. I know my daughter is looking forward to baking this weekend. Perhaps we can find some healthier recipes to try out.

@Zhoen I love how you handled your daughters concern over "belly flub". I also like how you used the comparison of "toning" versus "dieting". I'm keeping that one in the back of my mind in case this comes up with my daughter some day.

Fats - are there any fats you avoid? What are your go to sources of good fat? Do you feel you have the fat in your diet on point or do you need to add more or cut some? Do you take fish oil supplements?

I am all over the place with fats. As you know I have been eating way too much of the bad fats in Take-out foods. I love avocado and eat quite a bit of it, I cook with olive oil, don't eat all that much margarine, I also like salmon but probably don't eat it enough. No I don't take fish oil supplements. I am bad at remembering to take supplements - I was supposed to start taking calcium tablets a year ago and just struggled to get into the habit!

I know! It is so confusing sometimes ... I am definitely struggling at the moment with the idea of changing to Keto next week it is really challenging my long held thoughts about what was 'healthy' eating e.g. carbs, fruits etc. Its kind of funny its not like I was a huge fruit eater anyway but had been doing better lately and now I am freaking out about it not really being in the meal plans. As well as how many eggs are in this initial 2 week challenge I found - I don't think I can bring myself to do it and will switch out for a few non-egg options - it had eggs everyday! That goes against usual knowledge of no more than 6 eggs per week due to cholesterol - especially when I am trying to lower cholesterol.

This is the end goal, for this weekend's activities!

My wardrobe isn't quite that good yet - but I am working on it - I am loving the marie kondo folded clothes in their baskets though :-)

When looking around at different websites today I found a free state government initiative to provide support/education for people at risk of diabetes, heart disease. I met the eligibility criteria and get 6 sessions - the first is 1:1 then either small group or 1:1 over the phone - I think it can depend on where you live - so just have to wait now for them to contact me.

If I am still finding the eating challenging after a few weeks I will get a referral to a dietician again.

I had a girls dinner out last night with a couple of old friends, all 3 of us haven't been together for a catchup in years - it was really nice. One lives near me - we committed last night to start with a walk together once a week with an aim of trying to get it to 2 nights - depending on juggling children.

I loved #17!!! I need one of those drawers!!! ;p (and this is why I'm fat :p !)

This is me!!! Stupid weather... but lovely, lovely naps!

Currently, all this bad-weather couch-sitting (as opposed to regular couch-sitting) has me looking to buy a new couch. This one was great when it was new, but its old and broken down now, been re-covered once already, kids have grown up spilling filth all over it... it's time. But I *HATE* the shopping process. There's nothing jumping out at me online, which means we'll have to go to actual showrooms. We don't really need the sleeper function these days, but maybe we're ready for the built-in recliners... but nothing leather, and the words "mid-century modern" make me stabby. Urgh...

SO we survived the week. DS hated the brown rice after a day and wasn't really eating. He was allowed to have pizza with his class at school on Thursday which was good. He did get his black belt today. It was grueling 3ish hours. He is have to do a written test on the Korean language. He got 36 out of 40. I am so proud of all the work he has put into learning everything. We went to a Chinese buffet and he ate like crazy then felt sick for awhile after. We decided not to make his favorite food tonight so he has time to get back to normal. We will make it tomorrow.

We are now in the mist of a major snow storm. I think the worst we have seen in years. Snow started at about 10 this morning and has not stopped all day. Once this system is gone we will get lake affect snow. Right now we are sitting with about 10 to 12 inches of snow and this part has several more hours of the system. DH and I have been going out to shovel the driveway every couple of hours. He has shoveled 4 times and I have 3 time. I stayed in to cook dinner the one time. We got snacks and food on our way home from the Black Belt test so we are set to hang out in the house until Monday.

DH and I were supposed to go see the play Rodger and Hammerstein's Cinderella. We decided not to go. The roads just are not good and we were not going to chance getting in an accident and stuck in the city for the night. I am really bummed. This is my favorite version of Cinderella. So instead we watched once for I think 1964 (my favorite). It has Ginger Rogers as the Queen and Lesley Ann Warren as Cinderella. My husband is not a fan but he knew I liked it so he watched it with me.

We were really lucky to have clear skies last night, so the total lunar eclipse was visible. I stood outside on the side walk and watched the last bit. The neighbors up the block were having a party so that was fun, and there were people out watching down the other end of the street as well. Astrologically speaking it is a pretty powerful event, so it will be interesting to see what changes come about.

The Whole Life Challenge started Saturday and I'm doing well with it. I haven't gotten all of my food points because I'm still having some bread, but I am remembering to do the other things... even if it isn't until right before I log them! Stretching feels so good, I've been concentrating on upper body and loosening up shoulders, but I need to get down on the floor and stretch out my lower back as well.

And I really need to really get my motivation mojo going this week, as I've been slacking off lately and am behind on many things

He did get his black belt today.

Congratulations to your boy :cheer2::cheer2:

What is motivating me this week is .... it is my first week of new eating style ... and as we know the first week is usually the easiest as we are new with determination! Made Chicken Alfredo last night served with cauliflower in place of pasta - yummmm. Also being motivated by the fact that I only have a week of holiday left before it is back to work - so need to get some things done. My friend and I have locked in a walk/swim for Tuesday afternoon

It is Tuesday night here - so I am nearing the end of day 2 of new eating - food is tasty - but today I have experienced the foggy headachy symptoms they warned about - sugar withdrawal is a ......(beep). I drank some hydralyte this afternoon to see if that helped balance my electrolytes a bit - it did help a little but I can feel it again now coming back. I have to stay positive and think about the consequences if I don't see changes this time around.

In other good news - my friend and I walked together this afternoon and then had a relaxing float in the pool after.

@piglet1979 Congrats to your son! What a great achievement!

@4Mickeys Stay strong. Good thing you had a heads up about the headaches and were prepared with the hydralyte. Hope that helps to get you through. It sounds funny that you had a relaxing float in the pool since we were experiencing serious below zero wind chills below here yesterday. I was dreaming of being poolside in Disney ;)

I made my Disney dining reservations yesterday. I never had to make dining plans for a larger group (we have 11 going this summer). Anyway, Disney dining is my current motivation. I like to just relax on vacation and not worry about what food I'm eating. But in order for me to do that, I need to stay on track with my eating and exercising the rest of the year. The past 2 years I hadn't done that. So I'm determined to do that this year. Since I do my workouts in the basement, I hung a picture of our family in front of the castle down there. So I'm constantly looking at it as my motivation to drop about 20 more pounds before Disney. I know I can do it, as I've done it before. I just need to stay on track.

Sugar withdraw is challenging... but should only last a few days. Hang in there!

In the Whole Life Challenge, the current Daily Motivation is to have a "Golden Hour", which is an hour of digital detox where you turn everything off/put it away. Last night I did this in my first hour home from work and really liked the way it turned out. I would normally turn the TV on as soon as I walk in the door, but last night I left it off and actually did some household chores before sitting down to read. And we've been having some nice weather, so last night I got off the bus early and walked the rest of the way home... I think the rain is coming back, so might not be able to do this again for a while, but it sure did feel good tho. So far, the Challenge is really helping me to get re-focused.

I like the digital detox idea. I’m going to try that in the afternoon-put my phone out of reach and put the fireplace on and read or write letters (I have an elderly aunt that enjoys getting cards and letters-that way I can be sure to get something out once a week).
Great idea!
4Mickeys, hang in there-the first couple days are hard, but it will get better.
