Where to find insurance for my son post graduation while job searching?

Hi everyone :). My son will be graduating in December with a PhD in Physics. He's been so engrossed in finalizing his dissertation for his defense (which he passed with flying colors last week) and working on two articles to be published, that he is just starting his job search. He will be covered under his student health insurance until mid-January. Does anyone have suggestions of where to look for short term health insurance so he has coverage until he finds a job? If it matters, we are in Indiana. Thanks for any help that you can offer :).

How old is he? Can he be added to your family insurance through your employer? The age limit is usually in the mid twenties.

Ds 24 was just removed from our insurance as he is now fully employed in his career and married.

How old is he? Up to 26 he can be on his parents work insurance if they have it. He should be able to get ACA under the Indiana plan. Since this is a "change of life" reason, he doesn't need to worry about open enrollment being over. https://www.in.gov/aca/

Unfortunately adding him to my insurance coverage isn’t an option as he’s older than 26.

Ditto this, as the loss of coverage constitutes a qualifying life event, he can get exchange coverage outside of typical open enrollment periods. However, make sure he does so within 60 days of the final date of coverage under the old plan. Any longer than that and he's outside of his window.

Thanks for the Indiana specific ideas . Does anyone know if there any issues with income requirements if he’s living back with us while job searching? My husband and I make well above the income requirements, but I didn’t know if that would impact our son’s ability to qualify. Thanks!

His an adult, his parents income doesn't matter...
Exactly. And while not likely, another thing to keep in the back of your mind is, when he does get a job, there is no guarantee it will include health insurance. So it may not be temporary.

PLEASE HAVE HIM CHECK ON THIS-many active and graduating students are under the impression that they have coverage after it's ended. i see it all the time at the local medical provider (it contracts with the university so all the student health insurance patients are seen in the same office my doctor is located in). students assume they are covered over breaks and with some yes, some no-it comes as a big shock to them that summer isn't and if they graduate in fall quarter they're not covered for the winter break that happens in-between the end of fall quarter in december and beginning of winter quarter in january( b/c when they were attending prior to graduation in previous years they were).

in any case-IF HE HAS SCRIPS AND HIS STUDENT HEALTH COVERS THEM, suggest he get the max number of refills before his student coverage ends to cover him (and potentially save money vs. what can be pricey scrip co-pays on many plans).

i agree with having him apply through the health exchange-w/no income he's likely eligible to very low cost if not free coverage (depending on what your state offers).

even those that offer it often have waiting periods before eligibility kicks in-1st of the month following 90 days seems pretty standard these days.

Maybe through his Alumni Association? Once when both of us were unemployed for a few months I found bare minimum health insurance through my Alumni Association.

Keep in mind that if he is a healthy young person and not into risky sports, he probably can do fine with a high deductible plan. He'll need to be covered for a big emergency, but he'll only likely go to the doctor a handful of times (if that) before he's employed.
