Knee brace and TSA check point.

Does anybody know if I will be allowed to keep my knee brace on when I go through the airport security tomorrow? I usually go through the full body scanner at the airports because I have a metal hip implant. I was just wondering now about the knee brace as this is a new addition for this trip. :(

It's hard to predict. Since they will give you the revolvíng door scan anyway I would bet on keeping it on but I wouldn't give you very good odds on that bet.

Is it possible to use a knee brace with fiberglass or carbon fiber supports just for this leg (pardon the pun) of the journey? It would take some of the guesswork out of it. But in all likelihood, you'll keep it on either way.

I do not believe TSA can require you to remove it. You likely will need to be wanded, or a pat-down. I would allow some extra time.

Enjoy your vacation!

we just home yesterday, my husband wears leg braces, they will ask if you can walk without it,, when you say no, they will tell you go through the doors, and wand you down. You can print of a card from the TSA website , fill it out with why , what etc is your issue and hand it to them before you go through,, some people dont want the world to know what their ailment is, you can also ask to be screened in a more private area,, this will all prolong your time in the checkpoints.. another thing. you can ask for a wheelchair assist getting you through security and to your gate.. this will not mean you wont go through the same checks that everyone else does, but you will have someone helping you . on our way out last week , it took nearly an hour through security as we had liquids etc, on our way back , we still had to have all our bags opened and inspected, but it was a lot less time due to no liquids,,
oh and I dont know if this is ALL airlines , but Alaska is requesting that as well as laptops, 3oz fluids ect are taken out of your bags. they also want any food products,, especially the large bags of candy .

hope you have a great trip.

It's been my experience that every TSA experience is different. What is normal operating procedure at one airport is not allowed at another. Its best to always ask the first agent you interact with for the rules. "Do I need to take my Ipad out of my carry-on luggage?" "Must my snacks come out?"

That was also my experience the last time I flew with my lower leg in a brace. I also needed crutches at the time, and they gave me two plastic canes to use while hobbling through the metal detector.

I had also arranged for wheelchair assistance when making my reservation, and the skycap was amazing; he made everything go so smoothly at the checkpoint. I think it helps that they work with each other all the time and the skycaps know what to expect.
