Debt Dumpers - 2018

You might want to check how they are handling the extra payments. We could have made extra payments to skip some months or apply it to the principle. We opted for the latter and saved a bunch of interest and paid off the loans early.

Mine actually doesn’t give any options on how you can apply your payment. It’s a loan directly from my school, not through the Dept of Ed or anything. So any extra payments just pay down whatever interest has accrued between your last payment and the new payment, and then the rest goes to principal. Fortunately I’m down to accruing only $15 a month in interest, so the bulk of it is going to principal anyways :)

We're taking a half day this afternoon to go car looking. I hope it means we will find something to buy today. DH has calculated what we can afford and we will take some from savings for a down payment. We'll need to reduce the college savings for the car payments but such is life. First world problems.

I've been trying to get in touch with the donation place for two days now to schedule a pickup. I was supposed to hear from them within 24 hours (although the one person I talked to said it's more like 48) and it's been three days now. Have left a couple messages. The van is still at the mechanic's and I don't want it to wear out its welcome, so to speak, since they've been very nice to let us have the donation place just pick it up there. I would like this all just done, you know?

In other news, I was at a conference in DC for a few days this week, which is 28 miles from my house. In addition to parking, which was incredibly cheap for the city ($13/day!), I can submit reimbursement for mileage which is cool because I actually drive farther (50 miles) to go to work every day than I did for the conference and don't get reimbursed for that.

That's one reason why we abandoned paying the $100 extra on our mortgage we were doing once I started paying it online a few years ago. There's no way to earmark the funds for principle.

I found the donate your car places to be a royal pain with the same lack of response issues you encountered. I ended up call our local salvage yard who came the next day with a check.

Did you try peddle.com to see if you can get cash for your clunker? We got $1500 for DH's 2006 Honda CRV with 200,000 miles and a bad engine. Dealer offered us $50...

Nope, my friend used this donate place with good results so we already signed the title over and everything. We just want it gone. We bought a 2015 Camry this afternoon. To go with our older Camry and Rav, we'll keep Toyota in business!

:mad: They're building new houses in our neighborhood. And they so graciously left screws in the street which one decided to get stuck in my tire. Glad I'm working all this overtime so we can get a new tire next week. Ended last week with 14.5 hours of ot. With this week being a holiday, I'm sure I'll have plenty of hours to add to it.

I love my 2010 Camry!

Oh that's crap! But good that you're getting lots of overtime I guess. We have one week left of term before a 2 week break so DH will have only 3 available sub teaching days in this payback etc and 3 in the next. Hopefully he gets work for most of them though!

Reset the budget for the new financial year and pretty much every fun money spend for a month has been him. He loosens the belt very quickly when he is getting consistent work but doesn't realise I've been waiting on things like haircuts for me and the girls, new sheets and towels, dentist appt. etc. He's fine when I ask him to ease up but I hate having to initiate that conversation, I feel condescending.

Sorry to hear that! Here we have a place where I bought my tires that offers insurance for the lifetime of the tires for a pretty small fee when you purchase them. When I had a garage that backed into an alley it definitely came in handy. They replace your tire(s) for free!

Will join in on the Camry love! 3 of my 4 cars have been camrys.... in my 12 years of driving. That sounds really bad, but the first two dying were not my fault! One was my dad ignoring a simple maintenance issue until it became a big issue... DH and I were not allowed to fix it. Long story there. Pretty sure my dad ended up selling that one as is. The first one I had.. got set on fire! Crazy story! It was a great car tho and i was so upset when that happened.

But when i ended up needing to get a car pretty quick, I was looking for a Camry that was a couple years old... couldn't find what I wanted, so I ended up with a new one. Not the best move money wise, but I love it so much and plan to drive it until the motor falls out!

Oh that stinks! We have ours with Chase and their website lets us allocate as we like. I would call to ask if there's another way, even by check and snail mail.

I know this thread is for debt dumping, but the CC thread has an interesting link to Fidelity: open 2 accounts (Cash management and a brokerage account), deposit $200 and get $200 for free.

The catch? The original $200 must stay in for 9 months. Here's the link they shared (and there are LOTS of comments of people who have already applied): https://www.doctorofcredit.com/fide...ng-spending-accounts-get-200-bonus/#The_Offer

Yes, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE DoC!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:cheer2::banana::cool1: :worship:
I found them 2 yrs ago and have been churning bonuses ever since. I also open them for dh and ds21 when possible. At one point I was moving money among close to 30 checking accounts. It takes some time, a lot of patience, a lot of reminders and meticulous recordkeeping to keep track of it all. It truly pays off, esp when you consider the hourly rate of income! The time spent on this is a few minutes here and there so it doesn't feel like a burden.
For 2017, dh and I had over $4800 in bank bonuses, ds had $3200. Sure you have to claim it as income on tax returns but I look at it like this: If my employer said, "ruadisneyfan2, would you like a $4800 raise this year? If you take it you will have to declare this income." Would I decline it? Of course not.
Like Steve Miller says, Go on take the money and run.:yay:

This year I'm up to $2150 so far with $250 pending. This has been a big part of paying down debt since I made sure every single bonus $$ went to debt and made sure it didn't end up in the general fund.

We have been swimming. and swimming. and swimming.:fish:

I'm almost done my vacay fund for our fall trip out west, just 2 more weeks til it's done. Next goal is a Christmas fund of $5k. There is usually $ leftover but I like having it so I don't add to my holiday stress. The leftover is a bonus addition to the next goal in line which will a new/new for me car, hopefully by the end of the year.

Ds graduated HS and at graduation received a Character Education award with a check for $250. His Community Service teacher gave a speech about all the nice things he has done for the school: sanding/painting picnic tables, gardening, and overall go-to guy for anything electrical or mechanical. He also attended many times to a cemetery to clean up a sadly, "forgotten" cemetery for civil war heroes. He also attended a "soup kitchen" at a very poor city nearby to make sandwiches and give out meals to the poor.
omg, by the time she was done going on and on about all the good he has done, I was crying. So so happy to have gotten it all on video. I'd rather not post bc it mentions teachers names specifically and shows others students.
Anyway, he went through a really rough time in 9th-11th grade and really put dh and I through the wringer. It was like some alien abducted our sweet boy and left in his place a mean, selfish, lying, stealing, evil pr*ck in his place. He has come so far since then and this speech just reminded me how far he has come. :lovestruc :love1:
Sure he still leaves dirty plates in his room for days, dirty clothes on the floor but I take comfort in knowing he has a good, kind heart which is a far more important trait, imo. Being cleaner will improve when he gets his own place, or at least I tell myself it will. lol.

He had his wisdom teeth pulled around 10 days ago. Thank God that's over with. He did well but after choosing my vacation week (back in Dec) to coincide with his graduation and having time off to take him and help him as needed with recovery, later his bff offered to drive ds with him to the camp they like if he chose this week. It's a 4.5 hr drive each way so having his friend drive them there so that we don't have to sounded wonderful. It saves us from taking him ourselves, check in, kiss goodbye, and turn around and drive back 4.5 hrs! :headache:
I was so hoping he wouldn't have any complications that would ruin/cancel camp for him and glad it all worked out. He didn't want it done really but his impacted teeth were pushing on the rest and would eventually ruin all the alignment his braces created so no point in ruining that time, money & pain for braces. Also our insurance covers it 100%, just $25 copay for the consultation. If he waits til he has a problem and NEEDS them out asap, his own insurance some day would most likely not cover it as much. Of course he doesn't quite believe all of this but hopefully when he's older, some day he'll agree that it's better to be proactive than reactive.
They left for camp this morning and he's feeling great so as long as they get there safely :worried:, it's all good.

In our 100 degree heatwave, a fuse blew on our AC yesterday. By the time we realized the AC wasn't running, it was approx 80 degrees. Dh doesn't do HVAC but he has some knowledge about a lot of trades and has an ohm tester and could tell that the 2 fuses showed a different reading. Not knowing exactly what it should read, he couldn't tell which was the faulty one but by luck :shamrock: he had 2 spares and changed them both. By then it was 86 indoors! :headache: :faint: His bff is in the business and installed the unit and probably has a guy on call but we didn't want to bother them unless we really had to. So glad it was something dh could fix! I made him go to Lowe's and buy 2 more fuses to keep handy. I set it to hold temp at 68 and woke up freezing. :yay: :cold:
I will never, ever complain again about all the crap dh stores in the garage. :love2: :lovestruc
