Disney is in the process of removing the Do Not Disturb door hangers from resort rooms, and replacing them with Occupied door hangers. They will begin checking guest rooms daily. This daily check should normally be covered by housekeeping, but guests may receive a visit from security.

At the moment, there seems to be a lot of variability in the way this policy is being implemented. I will also be posting a sticky thread for actual guest experiences with these checks, please add your personal experiences to that thread.

This thread is for questions and discussion about the policy. Please keep all such posts on this thread; if you start a new thread on the topic, it may be merged with this thread or closed.

PLEASE also try to keep this thread free of rants, wild speculation, and conspiracy theories. This is a trip-planning board, and we would like this thread to be helpful to those planning stays at Disney resorts.

(There's a previous version of this thread floating around on the boards; sorry for the confusion. I goofed up the thread merge. :upsidedow)

Can you ask that they only go in when your in the room ? I do not use housekeeping because we prefer not having anyone in the room when we are not there . I have several medications that can be stolen that will not fit in the safe plus my dh stores his firearm in the room safe ( with permission of the resort ) and don’t want to take any chances of anything being taken out of the room . Thanks

Actually I’m fine with asking when we arrived but giving this was a “ questions or comments “ post I figured I would ask if anyone maybe already knew or had experience with it . Thanks

Hello. My post above about the contact information was not directed at you. It was for anyone that needs it. Some people are planning trips now and they might like a response from Disney as to what they might expect if they have special circumstances or needs surrounding this policy. Depending upon the answers those plans might change.

My post just happened to follow yours.

I think once a video goes up on YouTube of incessant knocking and cast members pushing past people to get in the room things will change. Us griping about it here doesn’t drive the point home with the masses.

I agree .. I see that being a issue with a lot of people , I’m not so much worried about that as just having strangers in the room while not there .I have had jewelry and medications stolen ( both at AKL ) from there before so we stopped using housekeeping years ago .

I don't care about the mousekeeper or security coming into the room, but I will be fuming mad if they wake me up in the morning or the kid during a nap.

Yes! According to a post from someone at Saratoga Springs, they knocked at 8:30 am! I don't want someone banging on my door that early. And we should be able to relax in our rooms midday as well.

And for our family 8:30 would usually be fine but they'd better not come at 2:00 pm when we have a napping kid! Which for us, at least, was the whole point of a DND sign--indicating which times are bad for you.

I'm planning request that mousekeeping comes early if possible, and if not that they come after 4 pm, it I don't know if they'll be able to honour that depending on their schedules, etc. Last time at the Poly we went without housekeeping a few days because they couldn't make it until mid-afternoon, despite our request for early service.

I could see the new system being ok in most cases if they'd have all guests complete some kind of survey about time preferences and then try to schedule services to stick to that. It wouldn't address all the concerns, but it would go a long way--however, it would also be a lot for them to keep track of, so maybe not practical.

This reminds me of 1 reason we didn't like DCL. It felt like there was always a CM in our room. We could never relax. One point, we came back from an excursion on Key West to find our room door propped open and a maintenance sign on the door. The problem was that no one was in our room! We had no idea how long our door was open and no one came back to our room. We called to complain & got an "I'm sorry" and a "check your belongings". We were never given a reason why maintenance was in our room in the first place.
I am not thrilled knowing that now WDW resorts will have CMs checking daily. What was the reasoning behind this?

I am debating whether this policy is enough to keep us from booking at a Disney resort. Has anyone experienced any room security checks at the other hotels near Disney? At the Hotel Plaza Blvd hotels or the Four Seasons?

We are a family of 3:
  • one morning/rope-drop person
  • one severely injured person with pain issues who may need to sleep at any point
  • one night owl
Historically, we put the do-not-disturb sign up when we arrive and leave it up for the duration of our stay. We don't have housekeeping (we don't make much of a mess...I bring the trash and used towels out to housekeeping in exchange for fresh towels when needed). At any point of the day, one of us is likely to be sleeping.

It's my impression--and I was told this by a WDW CM who telephoned me after I wrote to them about this policy--that if you have housekeeping, then no one else will come to your room that day. There isn't an additional check of your room on top of the regular housekeeping service. The only issue is if you decline housekeeping or put the hang tag on your door for 24+ hours and expect no one to come into your room. Then someone will come to your room.

As I understand it.

I know the Four Seasons has twice daily housekeeping for the same reason. Although their execution of it blows Disney's attempt out of the water. So far.

I've not had much luck with the BWV staff honoring our DND signs on door back when we had napping toddlers, so I don't expect that they're going to be any more respectful of the signs now that it is simply "Room Occupied". Plus, now that it is *not* a black and white rule of when CM cannot go into a guest room, it'll just lead to even more CM confusion and gray areas.

I, personally, do not like having Mousekeeping or Maintenance pop into our villas during stays, especially while I'm out. It doesn't feel like "home" if a stranger can just walk in at any time. That said, we don't tend to stay for more than 3-4 days at a time, and do a great job with our trash and recycling during our visits. Perhaps not every guest is as meticulous and WDW is trying to stay on top of things before it gets out of hand (vermin problems). If staying longer, I do expect a mid-week visit for mousekeeping/trash and I feel like every 3/4 days should be sufficient to stem the tide of any messy guests. If this is being implemented as a security measure, would a security check before entering the resorts (MB scan?) feel less intrusive than this new policy of potential daily check-ins? Possibly.

I recall seeing something a while back on twitter about how these are handled for DVC where we do not get housekeeping daily, but I can't recall the details. Outside of our cleaning days and trash/towel service days, should we expect to routinely get a visit for "security checks". (quotes entirely intentional)

Matter of time before this or worse happens, with someone impersonating a CM.

This is a real possibility.

I really don’t envy Disney. I guess it can go back to the alligator incident. They knew of a problem, they did nothing about it and tragedy.

There is always a chance that bad people do bad things but I feel this is a huge overreaction by Disney.

This policy is doing more harm than good with cast members walking in on people sleeping, showering, waking up people and babies napping. And on top of all that opening up the possibility of someone getting murdered or raped by someone impersonating a cast member. It seems like this policy is not cleary being explained to people and the people enforcing these checks being persistent in knocking and insisting to come into the room. Disney needs to do a better job. It won’t be long before there are live video cameras in the room under the guise of for your safety.

They need to hire more people and set up a system where people can notify housekeeping that they are leaving the room for the day and housekeeping has a set number of hours past notification to check the room. If they miss it, it’s on them. Give guests their privacy.

CM impersonation has always been a possibility.

For those who are truly concerned about an imposter, I would imagine there could be a system in place where the guest can call the front desk and check and make sure a legit CM has been sent to the room.

I wonder what percentage of guests typically refuse housekeeping and ask no CM to enter their rooms for the length of stay. Can’t imagine it would be too many- until these daily housekeeping credits were offered.

It seems that, with all these negative responses to the daily check, it might be easier for Disney to just do away with the housekeeping credit and then they would have far fewer people to have to schedule for a room check.

It would seem feasible to personally schedule a daily check with just a few guests who have concerns about someone in their rooms, but scheduling with large numbers might prove difficult.

However, if it is truly a security check, then scheduling it could limit the value of the check, if anyone were truly doing something dangerous or unlawful in the room.
