Thanksgiving favorites/ must haves

dressing made with hamburg, pork, and mashed potatoes for me is a must..regular cornbread stuffing, jellied cranberry sauce, everyone else has to have my Swiss Corn casserole (I don't like swiss, so I skip it), sauteed brussels sprouts with bacon, mashed potatoes, and gravy! And everyone else has to have pumpkin pie (not a favorite of mine so I bake them but don't eat them, lol!)

My SIL's mom makes this wonderful vegetable casserole that we all MUST have. Kind of like green bean casserole...broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, French fried onions, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, cheddar cheese, and milk; mix together, top with more fried onions and cheddar cheese and bake.

I'm always asked to make my sweet and sour kielbasa for appetizers.

A local restaurant makes a fabulous bread pudding with whiskey-butter sauce, so my MIL always orders a sheet of that for dessert.

My other SIL (DH's sister) lives with her BF on his family farm, and they raise turkeys, so no more frozen store-bought turkey for us. And BF knows how to make it perfectly - he doesn't use dressing to stuff it, he uses whole apples, turnips, onions, garlic, pears...we almost died last year, it was SO good!

Green Bean Casserole! We eat a lot of turkey, just as everyday meals. So, it doesn't really feel all that special.......but I ONLY make green bean casserole during the holidays!

I think I'll be cooking for myself this year, but I plan on making turkey (just a breast, probably), my mom's stuffing recipe, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable. Those are the must-haves. I'd love to do a broccoli casserole but I don't know if I can do all of that myself.

Sweet potatoes made casserole style, but instead of marshmallows on top, I use crumbled, extra crisp, bacon.

I started doing this a few years ago and now DH MUST have it.

Besides the turkey, what are the favorites or must haves on your Thanksgiving table?

Stuffing (real stuffing, not dressing), sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes.

And, depending on who's family we're hosting that year - orange jello with mandarin oranges and shredded carrots (hubby's family) or orange jello with mandarin oranges and mini marshmallows (my family).

Pumpkin pie.

That used to be my must have too!! I wish I could find a GOOD cream of mushroom soup that did not have gluten!!

Homemade stuffing topped with homemade gravy on one side and homemade cranberries on the other.

Please note that the turkey, mashed potatoes, and rolls are a given.

I can be happy with just that. Well until dessert time.

pumpkin pie with cool whip for me and dd

Hungarian stuffing (turkey liver, 1lb butter, onions, garlic, 2 loaf bread, dozen eggs) Heart attack stuffing is what I call it, but hubby must have.

This year will be the first Thanksgiving at home for several years as we are usually with family. DS wants green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and the stuffing from a box. I want pecan pie. It's the only time I have it and I could eat the whole thing by myself. I need to go buy some stretch pants...

Mashed potatoes, chicken noodles, sweet potatoes, and yeast rolls with homemade strawberry jam. Since this is a farm family, everything must be from scratch or my 92 yr old MIL will not let it get on the table.

1) Cheese ball appetizer

2) Stuffing / Cranberry Sauce / Rolls

3) Pea casserole (It's like the green bean one with the French fried onions.)

4) Some sort of dessert

Definitely green bean casserole. We usually go over to my SIL's for dinner and she doesn't make it. So this year I told her that I would bring it. I might be the only one that eats it but I don't care, I'm bringing it. Doesn't feel right if it's not on my T-day plate.

My other SIL makes a sweet potato casserole with the marshmallows on top. I have NEVER liked this stuff, EVER! A couple years ago I promised her that I would try a bite (basically just to shut her up :lmao:) and now it better be on my plate next to my green bean casserole. So I told the other SIL that I will also be bringing sweet potato casserole this year along with the green bean casserole. :thumbsup2 I'm also new to the cranberry sauce (jellied kind) I never liked anything cranberry and this stuff just made me gag. But over the last year or so, I've grown to like it.

As for desserts, I'm bringing a pumpkin dump cake and a toll house pie. The toll house pie is new for me this year, but have to have this pumpkin dump cake.

My mom's cornbread dressing is a must. The turkey, however, is not. I don't like it. I would much rather have duck or goose. The dressing, though, has to be on the table.

I was never a sweet potato fan until I had them at Ruth's Cris Steakhouse. Now I make them every year. They don't have marshmallows on them though but they are about 10,000 calories of sweet goodness!!
