March 2012: Spring Break, Here we come! Threadjackers take over the world!

Thanks for the update and everything Liddy. I am soo sorry you are going through this right now, it's not fair what any of us are going through with our "kids".

I really hope that the vet is able to do something for Stormy, and that it works out to be a fair price (cough, cough - like that'll happen, but we can dream)... I am so sad that your trip is in jeopardy.

Huge prayers and hugs coming your way - and thank you for all the prayers for our family too. (((Hugs)))

D~

D, get off the DIS and go snuggle that sweet baby of yours!

Don't worry about me. We'll all be fine. We just have to find that light at the end of the tunnel and heard towards it. :goodvibes

I'm having DH call this AM, so hopefully I know something before I even go to class today. Either way we go, I have a lot to do this week. :headache:

Still praying Rufus goes peacefully, and your family can seek out some comfort in all of this.:hug::hug: Thanks for the hugs and prayers coming our way.

He is laying right here next to my chair... I've been cuddling (ahem, smothering) him constantly for a week now, I figured I could let him rest for a few moments. I think he is relieved. :wizard:

I'll be stalking your PTR today for news of Stormy... I hope that lil' Houdini is good for the Vet and everything works out.

D~

Oh Liddy, I so hope you get some encourageing words from the new vet and that you do not have to cancel your trip. Stormy looks just like a kitty I had growing up and that picture of him is just tugging at my heart strings. Keeping my fingers crossed for you all and sending lots of   and prayers.

Awww, how adorable you two must be right now!

I am missing Stormy like crazy. I've not slept the past two nights ... because he is my snuggle buddy in bed. Anytime I sit down or lay down, he's right there. I hate when he lays on my legs at night, but I miss it like crazy right now. I'd give anything for him to be annoying right now.

Still waiting on DH to call. Hopefully he has an easy morning so he can sneak a call in to the vet quickly.

Thank you Sheila. DH and I have tossed out a lot of options on the table. Right now, it's the waiting game and then trying to assemble puzzle pieces and go from there.

Perhaps my Stormy used to be your Stormy in one of his other nine lives. :goodvibes He's a devil of a cat, but I love and adore him. He can't help it that he thinks he's part guard dog. :lmao:

Sheila, you've been on my mind and heart lately. I hope your family is doing well. I've been sending you lots of , :hug:s, and prayers. Thank you for thinking about us. :flower3:

Liddy, I am so sorry about Stormy! What is going on with all our beloved pets on here??? :confused3 Hope news from DH will be a pleasant surprise for you today. :wizard:

I hope that you get really good news today! Poor little Stormy...If I were closer to you, I would totally volunteer to take care of that sweet baby. ((((HUGS)))) Let us know as soon as you hear something.

I don't know ... but I don't like it. :guilty:

IN STORMY NEWS:
DH called while I was blow-drying my hair. The vet actually called him instead. I still don't have much to report until this afternoon, but here is what they said....
They think there is something wrong with the splint the first hospital put on him. I am so over this place. I'm waiting on confirmation, and if there IS something wrong with the splint, I'm going to start calling around and see what can be done with having someone over there to check on the place and have it shut down if they don't fix their ways.

Dadgum the soap boxes around here ...

Anyway, they want to change the splint and examine his leg better. They're going to sedate him and then do their thing. They may do more x-rays (I honestly hope they do). They'll re-set his leg and then put a new splint on. The vet is supposed to call back this afternoon with a more solid treatment plan. So it's still the waiting game.

I had them ask, and he is eating and drinking some, but not much. He's VERY stressed. I'm hoping they have a visitor area, so I can come and spend time with him later. I'm terrified that he hates us right now "for abandoning him". I know he feels abandoned ... the last time he got sick and was hospitalized, he didn't take being away from us very well. (He ate some cloth in 2010 and it got lodged in his lower tummy and he was very sick for a week while the vets -- yes, plural -- tried to figure out what was wrong. He was hospitalized for a few days here and there and would it was obvious that he was missing us something fierce. After the surgery, he was a whole new cat and refuses to leave our side. He's paranoid when we go out the door and let's us know if we were gone too long.)

Fingers are crossed that I can come visit (it's highly unlikely, but not impossible) and we can get a treatment we can all cope with. The vet gave a ballpark figure and it was manageable. However, that's without surgery. If they plan to keep him for a week or so, then we'll see if they'll keep him until we get back. I'd much rather them keep him until he's on the path to healing anyway. If I go outside to check the mail and he decides he doesn't like the splint ... it could be a disaster when I walk back inside. At least if he tries that at the vet's office, they can fix it before it gets worse -- and odds are, stop it from happening.

I'll post an update later when the vet calls back and DH can get more details.

Liddy, my prayers continue for little stormy in hopes that he is fine and doesn't cause any more problems to his leg.

Before I had kids I used to work for Save-A-Pet animal shelter. I worked in the animal health section making sure dogs recieved there pills, gave animals shots, held animals to get blood drawn, and cleaned alot of cages. I fell in love with alot of animals while I worked there in both canine and feline veriety. One of the cats I remember the most was a black cat that we named panther. The poor animal came in in such a bad state that one of his legs was ambutated.

Now at this point you are probably wondering why I just told this story. I am still sending out all my prayers that Stormy will we alright and you will not need to cancel your trip. But in case the worst does happen, I want to let you know that even with just three legs, Panther was one of the most active cats in the cat room. I have very found memories of sitting in there and him climbing in my lap for a pet.:hug:

I agree... I love the moral to Corri's story... There are a few that can be found in there.

I am praying that things work out with Stormy and he minds his manners for a few more days. And hugs to you too... I know Stormy misses you - but if you don't let him stay there, he won't get better, so you are doing the best thing you can right now.

My smilies have moved ... taking me forever to find them. :headache:

Thank you for sharing your story!

I know if worst case happened and they had to amputate, he'd be okay. But I'd be heart-broken. Before we were able to confirm it was broken, he was moving through the house on three legs. At first, we just thought it was tender and just observed him closely. The minute we saw it was broken, we were out the door.

It wouldn't be the worst thing that could possibly happen to him ... but I sure would be so sad.

And I think another moral to Corrine's story is that we hope Stormy has a wonderful and loving caregiver at the vet too! :goodvibes

I'm hoping this vet office is good. It came highly recommended by DH's coworker.

Thank you D.

I'm trying to be strong, but it would be easier if I could visit with him. I just miss him so much. It's so depressing here. He always greets me at the door when I come home from class ... and I find myself calling to him when I walk in the door. :guilty:

Heading out the door ... so Copying & Pasting what I posted on Facebook. Will type more later:

STORMY UPDATE: Vet just called, they changed out his splint to a proper one (the first vet put a too small one on). He's doing MUCH better and they expect it to heal with just the splint. They wanted to keep him for several days and re-evaluate him and determine a "send home date". As of right now, things are GOOD. Unless something happens between now and Friday, we are still on for WDW. They will be happy to kennel him while we are gone! They say Stormy is happy and doing better and I can come visit ANYTIME I want during office hours!!! I'm so happy and relieved right now!!!!!

I am so happy to hear that Liddy! I hope Stormy is good ad doesn't need any further care, and that is really awesome that the vet can keep him. Such a bummer that the ER vet didn't do anything right, i am sure it was expensive too, i'd totally send them a letter to complain.

D, I'm trying to find out how to get someone to that clinic to examine it. I've had several locals on FB PM me and share their horror stories from this place!!! It was very expensive, but it is the only local place (that I know of) that's only open evenings and weekends. From what I understand, local offices have to "volunteer" so many hours at this clinic (I'm sure they're paid). So most end up having to work double shifts (or more) and could care less about the quality of care they give. It's truly sad. The vet we left him with was super sweet, but she was NOT the one who cared for him. I don't think they need to be shut down, but I think they need to be taught to clean their kennels and they should always give Grade A quality care.

Okay, I'm home now ...

I talked to the vet for a good while this evening. She's super sweet (and she loves Disney!). She just got back from a stay at SSR in January. She said it was practically empty.

She reassured me that Stormy was not a bad-tempered cat towards her staff ... which makes me feel that her staff is just much better than the previous vets we've used.

I asked if they had a visitor's area, but let her know that I understood if it was a liability and I wasn't able to see him until we picked him up to bring him home, and she sounded excited that I wanted to come visit him. She said they have a visitor's area, but would prefer me to just come back to where the kennels were and visit if I didn't mind (which I would prefer, so he isn't being moved around).

I asked how he was eating and drinking, and she said that he'll only eat if no one is watching. They have to turn the lights off and listen and then check his food dish a bit later to monitor how much he eats. I find that hilarious, since he refuses to eat unless someone watches him at home. No joke, he won't eat unless we stand there and watch him (we have to at least be in the same room with him, or very close).

She said that the previous vet used a splint that was too small. It was actually causing more pain to him. Something about pushing/pulling. She used some unfamiliar terms, but I took from it that it was hurting him and they fixed it and that's the important thing. She said that she wanted to observe him for a few more days and then would discuss a date to release him. This is when I mentioned our Disney trip and she told us to go and have fun and leave Stormy with them. :goodvibes She told me how much it costs per day to board (it was so low that had I not seen the facility, I would have been worried).

I asked if I could come see him tomorrow and asked if I needed to put a deposit down for him. She said we could just pay "whenever" and that we came (as clients) with a great recommendation.

It turns out that DH's coworker went to college with the vet and introduced her to her husband (who shares the same name as my DH, which she pointed out). She said she wasn't worried about our bill, which made me feel better, but I told her that I'll come in tomorrow to visit Stormy and settle up and put a deposit down for my own peace of mind.

Sorry, I know I'm jumping around ... but she said once they changed the splint, it was like Stormy was a whole new cat. He was much more tolerable of the new splint. He still didn't like it much, but wasn't trying to destroy it like the old one. This is GREAT news! She's really optimistic that, while surgery would be better, it may not be needed. :goodvibes

So on to trip news ... unless something happens between now and Friday with Stormy, we are GOING! I have the kids almost completely packed. I need a pair of pants for DS and socks for DD.

Things I need to do this week:
buy shorts and a bathing suit for myself
change oil in car
get my hair trimmed
mani/pedi
pack DH and myself
pack misc stuff (cameras, chargers, etc)
laundry so I can finish packing the kids
purchase snacks for room
run by bank for cash

I have a test Thursday, and I have to visit the school on Friday. I'm going to visit Stormy tomorrow. Ugh, too much to do! I need to find a place to get my mani-pedi done. I hate for people to touch me, so I have issues with mani-pedis ... I also need to print out my itinerary and get it organized. I have our ADRs in my phone, but need to get the #'s in there as well.

I also need to find out if we're still going to be able to go to IoA. With all the kitty expenses, I don't want to break the budget with IoA tickets, parking fees, and food expenses (plus souvs). I just need to look at our checkbook and calculate the cost of IoA again.

I won't be around much tomorrow, as I'll be cramming for a test ... but I'll be around some. Hopefully will be able to finish my PTR Thursday. :woohoo:

Thanks for all the pixie dust, hugs, and prayers! It's amazing what happens when you have the most wonderful friends!!!! :grouphug:

I tried to reply last night, and then the Dis did something funny and I lost my post, I was too lazy to write it all over again... :rolleyes1

I agree - I sure hope that there is something that can be done. You should be able to contact your City Clerk - they are in charge of licensing and they might be able to point you in the right direction. Usually, to be licensed in the City, the animal hospital has to be inspected periodically - I would try to get the # or email address of the inspector, they should be able to help you.

This is so awesome! I am so glad that your vet is encouraging visitors... How wonderful - and to see him in his living environment at the vet is just awesome! What a relief for you and for Stormy.

I am so happy that the price to board Stormy is reasonable. IMO - there is no better place to have him right now than at the vet... Who knows, if you brought him to a regular boarding facility, if he would get the proper care for his leg that he needs right now. I really think this is the perfect solution for him.

[I asked if I could come see him tomorrow and asked if I needed to put a deposit down for him. She said we could just pay "whenever" and that we came (as clients) with a great recommendation.

[It turns out that DH's coworker went to college with the vet and introduced her to her husband (who shares the same name as my DH, which she pointed out). Oldest dd doesn't like anyone touching her toes. :confused3 I have no problems with it... I would love to get a mani-pedi for our trip, and I have seriously debated about it. Still thinking on it - but I'll probably be too much of a tightwad and just do it myself.

[I also need to find out if we're still going to be able to go to IoA. With all the kitty expenses, I don't want to break the budget with IoA tickets, parking fees, and food expenses (plus souvs). I just need to look at our checkbook and calculate the cost of IoA again.

I had it do that to me yesterday as well. :headache:

Sounds like a good plan. I'll look into it. Someone needs to get out there and tell them that the kennels should be clean! You should not be knocked down from animal waste vapors in the hallway, away from the actual kennel room.

Yay!!! You can't go wrong with a Vet who is nice + a Disney lover to boot. So happy you found a great vet! :lovestruc

My thoughts exactly! :cloud9:

This is so awesome! I am so glad that your vet is encouraging visitors... How wonderful - and to see him in his living environment at the vet is just awesome! What a relief for you and for Stormy.

Both of my previous vets wouldn't allow visitors. They also wouldn't allow clients back in the boarding area (due to liability issues per signs). She said he's in a small kennel to limit his mobility, but she said if he does well, he'll be moved to a cat condo. So I'm going to ask to see them when I'm there. :goodvibes I love being able to see exactly how big his home is. Right now, I know he needs a small one so he can't flop around and hurt himself or have too much room to work the splint off.

LOL It's so funny how peculiar they get about certain things.

He's a very odd cat to begin with.

I am so happy that the price to board Stormy is reasonable. IMO - there is no better place to have him right now than at the vet... Who knows, if you brought him to a regular boarding facility, if he would get the proper care for his leg that he needs right now. I really think this is the perfect solution for him.

I agree. I was worried they wouldn't be able to keep him (as my previous vet only keeps animals for medical reasons, not because the owner is going out of town). So I was worried this one might be the same way and send him home once they felt his leg was well enough. However, they asked to keep him, which made me feel so much better!!! I'd be a nervous wreck with him home right now anyway.

That is awesome too. Even our vet, who we have been going to for years, still requires payment before we take Ruf home - on the flip side - we have never not had the payment available, so we have never had to ask if there is another way to pay... If that makes sense.

I'd say if we went to pick him up, we'd be asked for payment by the girls up front. But it felt good to know that the vet wasn't concerned with finances and would work with us.

When Stormy had his surgery in 2010, we were worried we wouldn't have the money. I asked if they could work with us, and she said they would. However, it was really just a 30 day extension, with weekly payments. We ended up having the money and just paid it anyway ... but I thought the surgery would be in the thousands -- which a 30 day extension wouldn't have helped much with that. :sad2:

I always like to ask when going somewhere new, just in case I do get into a bind with finances. I would really prefer one who is willing to work on payment arrangements if a financial crisis came up. :goodvibes

This is awesome news!

YAY!!!! Super excited! I know, I have a few last minute things left to do... Only 2 more days left of work!

Yay for two more days of work! I have three more classes. :headache: Well, technically four ... but today's class is just two "periods long", but it's the same course. Stats for an hour, then 10 minute break, then stats for another hour. Yay. :headache:

I'm hoping for shopping today! I need a bathing suit, some shorts, and a cute sundress!

Oldest dd doesn't like anyone touching her toes. :confused3 I have no problems with it... I would love to get a mani-pedi for our trip, and I have seriously debated about it. Still thinking on it - but I'll probably be too much of a tightwad and just do it myself.

I'm frugal as well ... but I plan on wearing flip flops, and my toes will be showing, and I hate ... DESPISE toes. So I'd at least like mine looking as pretty as possible. I can't stand for anyone to touch my feet. I won't even let DH touch my feet. He likes feet and he's wants to give me foot massages and stuff (he massages DD's feet for her :lmao:). But I can't take anyone touching my feet at all. Below the ankle is "no no" territory. :sad2:

I hope you are still able to go.

Me too. Hoping to crunch numbers tonight after my first cram session. :thumbsup2

I agree - we all have some great Dis friends! :lovestruc

The bestest amazingest DIS friends! :goodvibes

Oh Liddy, I am so incredibly happy to hear your news. Not only that your trip to WDW is still on but that Stormy is doing better and someone nice is able to watch over him.

We have an ER vet about 20 min. from my house and I probably would not take any of my animals there unless they were on deaths door for their own safety. My sister doesn't have any two legged kids but has several four legged ones. Boston Terrier is her breed of choice. In Nov. she noticed that one of them was having problems and rushed her in the middle of the night to the ER Vet. From the start they continued to throw numbers in her face and ask her how she was going to pay for it. (She had left the house so quick that she didn't even grab her wallet) At one point they asked her if she wanted a IV and when she said yes they told her it was $200 up front. Unfortunatly Sugar had a bad infection in her uterues and there wasn't anything they could do. But while she sat there holding her dieing fur baby the receptionist actually had the nerve to come in and tell her if she didn't pay her bill with in 3 days that they would take her to court. Really???:confused3:headache::headache:

Sorry just your ER vet story brought up bad memories and I just had to vent a little.

I hope that things work out for IOA, I want to hear all about WWoHP.

Can't wait to see you next week.:thumbsup2

OH!!! This is FABULOUS news!!!! WOO HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!:woohoo:

I am so glad that you were able to find such a great vet. And a Disney lover to boot? How awesome!

It sounds like Stormy is in very good hands now. I'm so glad that he's doing better!! I would definitely look into some options from that other vet that you had them at. I honestly don't think that you should have to pay them anything at all. (My opinion of course.) It sounded like such an awful place, and shame on them for not taking care of your baby correctly! I seriously want to get in my truck and drive down there just to give them a piece of my mind.

Now you can start getting excited and start not sleeping because you're excited about your trip! I am so excited for you guys and can't wait to hear all about it!!!

Best of luck on your test! I know you'll do great! :thumbsup2

And about the mani/pedi...Are you going to get a special Mickey one??? You'll have to take pictures for us! LOL. I'll need to get mine done pretty soon too. I'm thinking about Mickey's on my toes. LOL. I'd like to get DD's done too, but not sure if I can do that and not give the trip away! :confused3

In the meantime...I'm going to do my happy dance for you!!! :dance3::dance3:

So glad you got some positive news! I'll be sending you good vibes in hopes it all works out for you ! :goodvibes
