drum corps

The Illuminations show is somewhere on YouTube too. The video quality kind of stinks, but whaddareyagonnado? :)

Well if you playing the part of Marge Simpson (cleaning up after Homer the past few days) I would make a cocktail, jam in the DVD and have a great time!

Ok twist my arm! :rotfl2:

Monorail marched 93 Cadets.

Uh OH!! I married the Drum Major from 93 Star... I don't know if I'm able to speak to you...

;) Just kidding!!

Were you in the horn line? Percussion? Guard? Just curious.. I know lots of people that marched Cadets that year. Be fun to see who we both know!

Sweeeet! :) Okay, okay......no hard feelings, right? lol I marched bari that year. I'm horrible with names but I'm sure I could remember a few.

After 10 years all rivalries are off! :lmao:

I actually am good friends with a Cavalier, and we were neck in neck in 81. I never ate so much green Jell-O in my life!

Should be true... DH even taught the Cadets' hornline in the late 90's early 2000's :) But he still can't hear the words 'one tenth' without shuddering!!

Most of the people I know were in the color guard... Jeffrey Kahler, Stephanie Murray, Craig Beisecker, Heidi Reissland. There's a few anyway.. ring any bells?

One tenth hurts! This is way before most of everyone out here's time, but back in the day (1979 to be exact) you actually lost a tenth for a dropped rifle (gun Viki :lmao: ) and Phantom lost DCI by one tenth, and yes, one girl dropped her rifle! How would you like to be her? :guilty:

I think I remember Craig and Stephanie. A few years ago I found out that our percussion section leader, John, was teaching percussion at the same school my friend used to teach guard at. When I showed up to the first rehearsal I kept looking at him and thinking, "Iiiiii.....knoooow this guy.......somehooooow....." :lmao: He kind of had the same expression after my friend (re)introduced us. I was so happy to see that the school's drumline was kickin' butt.

*Breaks into the chorus from It's a Small World*

And FYI: The only reason we got the extra one-tenth was because the judges felt guilty about what happened in 92. :rotfl:

*runs away*

So do you really think the Cadets got ripped off in 92? Just curious, I was at that show and I thought it could have gone either way. As long as that overproduced show of Stars didn't win that night. Jesus, blue skirts that when opened contained red and white stripes! UGH! :scared1:

Well ConcK you asked for it! No sugar needed for todays coffee clip! These kids are as corny as Kansas in August! Sorry Sooze, but this corps was either hot or real real bad depending on the year. This year, well just take a look for yourself! :rotfl:

(It's a small world should NEVER be played on a football field....EVER!)

I dunno. My friends who I've talked to about it all seem to say the same thing about how they got "ripped off". (Of course, I suppose it doesn't help that most of these people are either color guard teachers or performers, and tend to know very little about music performance. One of these people absolutely loves the Star 92 show.....but we'll just leave that topic alone for now. :lmao: ) I thought it was a good show, but to be honest I've only seen it once or twice. I remember it had its moments, and was fairly innovative for its time.

I didn't get to see any of the 1992 shows until around 1994 or 1995.

I had a question for all you drum corps fans out there.

There was a show in either the late 80s or early 90s that was called something like "....for the Contemporary Child". Does anyone know who performed that show and what year it was? :confused3

Suncoast Sound, WOW and what a show it was! From their website....

Pushing the envelope again in 1988, Suncoast produced another original show entitled "Symphonic Dances for the Contemporary Child - written for Bugles, Percussion and Visual Ensemble," composed by Robert Smith. It was a conceptual show, depicting how children imitate adults and later, as adults, play children's games. The musically and visually challenging show placed the corps in 10th place at finals.

It was a beautiful show. But my take on it was that it was about child abuse. You have to remember back in the day they didnt have microphones to explain everything! :rotfl: I have the audio if you want..PM me.

Okay... I'm a color guard person here... but correct me if I'm wrong... Wasn't Star's hornline in '92 phenomenal? I can understand the perception of the show being overproduced.. but that was the complete trend in the early 90's.. no? Maybe I'm a bit protective of the Star thing, since I'm so buried in it here... but as far as a musical sound.. it's not even a question in my opinion....

I've learned a lot watching my DH work with hornlines during the past 10 years, and his work with Crown is obviously amazing;) so I think I can state the above opinion!! Let me know if I'm way off here!!

No, you're right. Their brass had such an incredible, powerful, clean sound. They were pretty much that way for the last 4 or 5 years of their existence. (Trust me.....2 or 3 of Star's shows in the early 90s make my DCI top-10 list. :woohoo: ) Their 92 show was a bit overdone propwise, but I did love their hornline. I was never really a fan of those patriotic shows, which is probably why the 92 show wasn't my absolute favorite.

In 93 Star's horns made us sound like we were playing our horns through our noses. :rotfl: You know....that New Jersey nasally sound isn't always a good thing.

No wonder I've been liking Crown's hornline more and more over the past few years. :thumbsup2

It also helps if you playing on horns that were actually bought in THIS century! :lmao:

When I marched Cadets the whole corps was held together by bobby pins, duct tape, and safety pins! :woohoo:

"God Bless Aunt Nell!"

Glad the BLUE team is doing good, but lay off the Cadets a little will ya? Or else I'll sick MonorailMan on ya!

Okay.. thanks for confirming my thoughts! BTW, AT THE TIME, before I even knew DH existed, I was one of those fans that bashed Star for all of their money and props and over-the-top stuff... DH still acuses me of BOOing Star.. even tho' I never did. I just bashed them privately;)

Looks like the end of the season is actually getting exciting!! Hooray!

It was amazing how Star could go from over the top/tacky in 92 to absolutely beautiful and bare (black and cream) in 93. I do admit now that 93 star pushed the envelope in drum corps years ahead. That show was a masterpiece!

(I've never boood a drum corps, but I did chuckle at the $ of Indiana sign that appeared at finals one year!)
