We went to see "Moana" yesterday evening after Thanksgiving dinner. It was a huge hit with our family. Disney Studios has hit another one out of the park, in my opinion. The music was so awesome...it reminded me a lot of my mom and all the times she'd go vacation in Hawaii. She loved Polynesian/Pacific Islander culture. Dwayne Johnson was so great as Maui. Maui's tattoos were really amusing. There's a funny Easter egg in 1 scene when Maui is shape shifting. I won't spoil it for anybody who hasn't seen the movie yet. I would totally see this a second time!

What did the rest of y'all think?

We went today and other than the fact I was worried about the time (there were 25 minutes of previews and we had a boy that needed to be at work at a certain time), I liked it. One thing I liked about it was that it wasn't too stressful. Like in Inside Out where everything keeps going wrong forever...this didn't feel like that to me. There was enough happy mixed in throughout. Very beautiful animation as well.

We want to see this one!!!

Not to sidetrack too much, but does Lin Manuel have any cultural connection or history with Hawaiian Music.
When I went to Kauai last year, I really got into true Hawaiian music. Everything from Makana to 'the masters'.
I was hoping that Disney would bring some of this authenticity into the movie.

I cracked up when I saw the Chicken in the previews. Especially on Kauai, the prolific and colorful and beautiful Kauai chickens and roosters who became feral when hurricane Iniki (sp???) blew down all of the chicken coops, are a part of the landscape and culture!

Makana did the music for the big tourism 'Let Hawaii Happen' videos.
I love Makana's Ka-ena Dream. (Early in the morning, just before the break of dawn, I can hear the ocean, surfing with the rising sunnnn!!!)
And I am thinking about Dennis Kamakahi with his son doing U'lilli E, which was used in The Descendants
Here is a link to one of my all time favorites, done by The Masters, including Dennis Kamakahi.
This version of the song is just amazing and goes right to the heart.
Get your good headphones for this one.

My kids have been singing the "We Know The Way" song all day long. I found this interesting interview of Opetaia Foa'i -->
. He's from New Zealand and talks in this interview about some of the inspiration and meaning of the music that they came up with. He and his band are so talented.

This video includes some interviews of the composers -->

Too PC for me but I'm sure it'll make Disney oodles of $$$.

If you don't mind my asking, what do you mean?

As funny & cute as "Zootopia" was, I thought it got a little politically "preachy" in some spots - not that the message wasn't good, & it didn't stop us from buying the DVD after we saw it in the theater. But, in my mind, it did have some political undertones.

We loved it! Can't get to Aulani fast enough. Stay for the gag at the end of the credits. :yay:

It lived up to my (very high) expectations. I loved the animation, the music, the story, and the characters. I particularly loved the parts with Moana's grandmother.

I saw five movies in seven days (mostly due to a lack of other plans) last week into this week, and Moana was my favorite of the group.

We bought tickets on Wednesday to go see it this afternoon. DD and I are excited. I've heard nothing but good reviews.

Oh, I think we know what they mean. And that they didn't actually see it.

We're going to the 12:50 showing this afternoon... so excited to see it!

 If you're talking about L&Lfan (who I think is a "he" not a "they"), well then, no I have no idea what he means, although I would like to. I hope he comes back and expands on his comment. And BTW - did you see it? :scratchin

Just to clarify - This thread was not meant to be a political one in any way whatsoever. Please start another thread if you'd like to comment on the politics of Lin-Manuel Miranda. This thread is meant to discuss what people thought of the movie, Moana. While the music in the movie is a big part of it, that's not the entire movie. I really don't care who the composers were. I don't care about their politics. We went to see Moana because we thought it would be a nice thing to do together as an extended family on Thanksgiving Day and all 3 generations of us really enjoyed it. We thought that Disney did a really great job on the movie. We loved the music. We loved the animation. We loved the comedy in it. Disney did a great job.

We just saw it and thought it was fantastic. I thought it was better than frozen but I just thought frozen was ok but understood how kids would love it. The animation was gorgeous. The colors were beautiful. Very well done.
