If you're comparing it to Waikiki, Aulani is in a different area and has a totally different feel than any of the Waikiki resorts. Waikiki is a city with high-rise buildings and a pretty crowded beach. Aulani is in what's almost a private town that's way less busy with nice beaches in front of each resort.
A better comparison would be the Four Seasons or Marriott in Ko Olina. The Four Seasons is usually more expensive but has larger rooms, and the Marriott is cheaper but less theming. All of them have the same beach access.
