We had a fabulous time on the Jewel!

Hi everyone!

Wanted to give you all some feedback from our recent cruise on the Jewel. This won't be a full review just some longish thoughts. Ask any questions! Quick background: Me, DH, DD10 and DS3. This was my 7th cruise and we've sailed CCL, DCL, and NCL.

Cruise departed from San Juan on 5/24. We flew in same day with Southwest because the cruise didn't leave until 9pm. I purposely picked a flight that we didn't change planes so there would be minimal risk with our luggage. Guess what? They took out luggage off in Orlando and didn't put it back on. After some major tears at the baggage counter they said they would attempt to get it on the next flight to SJU that would arrive around 6:30pm. We proceeded to the ship on a hope and a prayer it would arrive. We were actually sitting at the Windjammer aft open seating and saw the plane come in. Our luggage was on it and it arrived 10 minutes before sailing!! One note: When I called our travel insurance they suggested I ask that if it didn't arrive it be sent to the next port of call, St. Maarten. I was told Southwest does not do this and we would be stuck without it. The travel insurance agent seemed surprised and said most of the major US airlines will do this. Just something to be aware of.

Ship: I thought it was a very nice ship. It seemed elegant to me. It was clean and well-maintained. It is an older ship and I believe it is due for dry dock next year. Yes there are signs of aging but you have to be looking for them and honestly I don't care about that as long as it is clean! I loved the glass in the Centrum area and it was always nice to take the elevators and look out at the port or the sea. Beautiful!

Room: We had a balcony stateroom on deck 9. After staying on deck 10 on the Fantasy and listening to chairs scrape on the pool deck every morning I always go a deck down. Room was fine and balcony was pretty deep. The pull out sofa seemed to rest on the floor but DD and DS liked it. The size of the room was good for the four of us. There is a nice lighted vanity where I would get ready while everyone was showering. Our room steward Gerry was very good and would always ask if everything was ok when we saw him. We got towel animals every night without asking.

Dining service: We had early seating (6:00) and had the most fabulous team ever! I had requested a table for four near a window and our request was fulfilled. Our experience on DCL was somewhat soured by a bad serving team and I will say our last CCL and this RCI blew that service out of the water! Joaquin from the Philippines was our waiter and Maria from Jamaica was our assistant. I cannot put into words how much of a delight they were! DS loved "Bakeen" because he really showered him with lots of attention. He let him lead the precession of singing waiters out of the back and DS was smiling from ear to ear and swinging his towel. I happen to love the singing waiters! PSA: Be on time for dinner, people! The table nearest us was routinely VERY late for dinner (6:45-7:15) and really messed the service up. They spoke very little English so I'm not sure they completely understood the concept. The team served them with the same grace as they did us but it really caused them to have to hustle around since they were completely off course.

Food: We are not foodies by any means but I do like good food that looks good and tastes just as good. I thought the dining room food was excellent! There were definitely some very memorable dishes and some that were good. I didn't have anything that I thought was bad.

I do get tired of the Windjammer (or any cruise buffet) breakfast so at the suggestion of Joaquin we attended a Royal Chocolate breakfast in the dining room. We were in port so we had to hustle a bit. If you like chocolate, wow! Chocolate pastries, waffles, pancakes, milkshakes, you name it! It was good and a great way to start our day in St. Lucia.

Windjammer lunch was good also, we mostly ate a light meal there when we returned from port.

Kids club: Background, DD HATED the club on DCL and loved CCL's. I *think* this is due to the large group of ages in the club on DCL, so I was optimistic about RCI since the groups are separated by age like CCL. We missed the open house due to the luggage debacle so on our first day after we returned from St. Maarten she wanted to go because the theme was candy making. We got there and the few kids that were there were just playing a game (gaga ball maybe) and she was disappointed and did not stay. Not a good start! I asked the next day (we were in port again) and was told it was because the kids that were there had been there all day and the counselors decided they didn't need any extra energy from sugar :) but that they usually adhere to the schedule. The next day they were doing the activity as planned and she happily stayed. Off the top of my head some of the themes for each session were: carnival games, boys vs. girls, under the sea, sports, space mania, etc. DD likes this type of structure (she loves school lol) so I think this is another reason why she didn't care for DCL. Definitely two thumbs up from her for Adventure Ocean! DS went a few times for an hour here or there but didn't spend a lot of time there. His age group had the same theme but more age appropriate activities. DD stayed on the last night for the extra party hours ($7/hr) for the Gaga Ball tournament and won the gold medal! It's a cool medal of the crown and anchor.

Pools: This was a port intensive itinerary so we really only spent an extended amount of time in the pool on the last day which was a sea day. We stayed away from the main pool and they both went down the slide at the kids pool about 100 times each. It had a nice area in the pool in the shade to sit where you could keep an eye on everything.

I did visit the Solarium for an hour on this day and it was relaxing. I thought the pool water was a bit cool but enjoyed the hot tub.

Itinerary: As mentioned above this was very port intensive with only one sea day. We visited St. Maarten where we rented a jeep on our own and drove to Maho Beach and then the french side for some pastry. We had just been here with DCL so it was low key. Our next stop was St. Kitts and we did the Scenic Railway Train through RCI. It was fun and DS loved it. Next we went to Antigua and did a beach day on our own. Next was St. Lucia and we did a private tour. We went to the warm mineral baths and it was AMAZING! One of the top 3 excursions we've ever done. Last we stopped at Barbados and did a private catamaran/snorkeling adventure and it also ranks in the top 3. We saw the sea turtles and had a great lunch. I thought Barbados was so beautiful. Probably the most beautiful water and sand I have seen and I've been all over the Caribbean!

Final thoughts: We will sail RCI again. The staff were all friendly and the service was great. Our son ran into a pole in the Windjammer on our day in Antigua and split his forehead open a bit. The staff was right there assisting us and an officer was there in seconds. He escorted us to the medical center where DS did have to get stitches and some glue. The medical staff was friendly, professional and great. DD was queasy about the procedure so the nurse out front entertained her.

One other note: The senior officers were very visible during this cruise. This must be an RCI initiative because we were asked about it on the survey. I do not remember this type of visibility on any cruises on any line. There was a meet and greet the first night, a Q & A on the sea day and later on that day they signed shirts that you could purchase for the Make A Wish foundation.

Overall a fantastic trip! Feel free to ask any questions!

I would just 2nd that my kids loved RCCL kids clubs (somewhat more than DCL) at ages 5-9, as well. They liked the structured activities and many, simple crafts.

Glad to hear someone else feels the same :) Sometimes I think we're in a vast minority!

Two of my three don't like kids clubs on any line and the one that does prefers Carnival to Disney. He's pretty easy going so he didn't specifically dislike DCL's clubs, he just preferred CCL. He's never been on RCCL. Maybe next year.

Thanks for the review.

Soooooo happy you enjoyed the Jewell. She IS an elegant lady.

Hubsters and I love the Radiance Class ships. Just the right size. We don't really need all the whoo haa of the bigger ships.

We were married on the Radiance in Juneau and will board her Friday for an anniversary cruise ...... Currently up in Denali National Park.

Ditto to the RCI service.

Happy you and your family had a good cruise.

Thanks so much for the review of your cruise on the Jewel. We will be cruising on the "Adventure of the Seas" out of San Juan in January. The islands are the same as your cruise, except for St. Kitts. I just started researching the islands and what we would like to do on each of the islands. Our excursions will probably be centered around water activities and the beach. If you don't mind I have a few questions.

Did you book your excursions from RCCL or did you book them on your own and if you booked on your own who did you book through?

What beach did you visit in Antigua? How did you get to the beach, taxis, etc?

Did you stop at a beach in Barbados while on the catamaran/snorkeling adventure, did you book this through RCCL?

The private tour in St. Lucia was that through a private company or RCCL and was it just for your family? A warm mineral bath sounds great.

Sorry for all the questions but I've never been to any of these islands and I want to make sure we do the right excursions for us.
Thanks for your help.

Not at all! I had lots of questions about this itinerary and don't mind helping others!

The only excursion booked through RCI was the St. Kitts Scenic Railway due to an agreement with RCI. I just prefer the smaller groups of private excursions.

What beach did you visit in Antigua? How did you get to the beach, taxis, etc?
We visited St. James Beach. I had intended to visit Coconut Beach Club but due to my son's accident, we got a late start and decided to stay close in case he started feeling bad. There are tons of taxi drivers in the cruise terminal area with peachy colored shirts. We just stopped at one and he showed us a map of where the beaches were. Taxi/minibus was $12 each way and the driver did not wait for anyone else. I saw others do this but ours didn't! Ft. James was the closest. It was a nice quiet day, which was just what we needed after all the drama! There was an RCI beach break excursion there but they left shortly after we arrived. We rented chairs for $10 each and there were also umbrellas. Food and drink was available for purchase but we did not purchase any. There were a few vendors and a firm "no thank you" and they did not come back. The beach does have a slight drop off when you first get in the water but is really pretty! Overall a nice, relaxing beach day.

We booked this tour through Action Charters. I had tried to book Calabaza but they were booked and Action was recommended by them. We dropped anchor at a beach area but we were not on an actual beach. We ate lunch here and had some time to swim after. I suppose you could visit the beach if you wanted to swim to it.

This was a private tour booked through Real St. Lucia Tours. I loved it because it was just us and fully customizable to what we wanted to do that day. Our driver was really flexible and so helpful, just whatever we wanted to do. As I said above, the warm mineral baths were so awesome to us! I would recommend the tour company and that experience to anyone! Simply amazing!!

Sorry for all the questions but I've never been to any of these islands and I want to make sure we do the right excursions for us.
Thanks for your help.

No worries :) Hope I answered your questions! Let me know if you need any other info about the tour companies, etc! Hope you have an awesome time!! I loved this itinerary so much, I am already to go back and try a slightly different version!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I've never done a private tour while cruising, I'm nervous that we won't make it back in time before the ship starts to depart. I've always booked the ship's excursions. Were you at all nervous about making it back to the ship in time? What time did your tours start in the morning and about what time did you make it back to the ship?

We are departing on the Jewel in a couple of weeks for a B2B and now you have me super excited! :yay: We usually book tours through the cruise line, but this time we are going to try getting a private tour in ST. Kitts and we booked motorcycle trikes in Aruba

I did not get nervous about getting back to the ship on time with either tour in St. Lucia or Barbados. I always read reviews on TripAdvisor and Cruise Critic to make sure they are reputable. Many of these tours depend on business from cruisers so I feel that they try really hard to make sure they get people to the ship on time. They know what time the ships arrive and depart. For the St. Lucia tour, it started at 9am and ended around 3pm and all aboard was 4:30. For Barbados, the excursion started at 9:30am and ended around 2:30 and all aboard was 4:30. If we are out on our own like we were in St. Maarten and Antigua I always allow 2 1/2 hours to get back to the ship unless we're really close.

Of course there is always a small risk of something happening while on a private excursion and that's why we buy travel insurance and have our passports with us, just in case :)
The cheaper cost and smaller or private groups win me over every time!
