I'll be the lone vote for Palm Springs. 
I love it there even in the summer. 
For me its a relaxing trip and something about the HOT, HOT, HOT(...no doubt about it its really hot) is soo relaxing. We spend a lot of time in the pool and usually go out to a nice dinner at night. I do live in the desert so maybe I'm just acclimated to the heat but we're at a higher elevation and it doesn't get as hot as Palm Springs so who knows. I wouldn't go out hiking in the middle of the day but Palm Springs is beautiful, (so different from Maine I'm sure)and I really do enjoy it.
San Diego is great too and I go there often as my sister lives there but it's just like any other beachy tourist town.
