Day One: Donuts, Dragons & Dramamine
Before going to bed the night before, DH looked at me and said, “This isn’t like Disney vacation is it? We don’t have to wake up at 6:30 AM everyday, right?”
I assured him that, no, we wouldn’t have to wake up early, and that we were going to sleep in the next day and head to the parks around 10 – 11 am.
WELP....I ended up waking up around 7 am & by default woke DH up around 7:30. He was annoyed & I was excited!!!
We ended up heading out to US right around 9 am
(park opening) Everyone was heading towards DM or Diagon Alley. We decided to head the opposite direction towards Hollywood.
Hollywood was
EMPTY. No one there except....
Yup, Homer Simpson! Just hanging out by himself in the middle of Hollywood. This was a whole new experience for us – characters without a line, just walking around hanging out with guest! 1 point Universal, 0 points Disney.
Other great experiences with characters included the DM dance parties in the middle of the streets with guest and the Green Goblin chasing people around IOA.
After we hung out with Homer, DH remembered...he forgot to take his dramamine!
I was so annoyed, because I reminded 5 times to take it before we left the hotel. Luckily, we were still near Guest Relations and ran in to ask where we could buy some. DH gets really sick on simulator rides
(to the point where it almost stopped us from ever planning this trip to US). They told us that we could walk over to The First Aid office and they would give it to us for
FREE! Sure enough, the First aid office gave him a dramamine pill, and we were good to go for the rest of the day!
Our first stop of the day was ET. There were one 3 other people waiting to ride with us when we entered the pre-show room. This was DH's first ride at Universal, and even though it was an older Children's ride –the very first thing he commented on was how the queue was much more “fun & cool” than a lot of the Disney queues.
This would be a trend the whole rest of our trip as well.
After escaping with ET, we spotted (a completely empty!) Springfield, USA around the corner. DH was like a kid in the candy store! Much how I felt at Diagon Alley later on. Anywhere there was to take a photo, it was taken!
I pointed out the donut stand, and told him that's where the “Big Pink” donut was, and that I wanted to get one at some point during our trip. “Well, its a good thing we didn’t eat breakfast yet!” he said while already pulling the money out of his wallet.
With Big Pink in hand, we decided to take a few photo ops with the Lard Lad statue. We definitely got a few stares having a photo shoot with a giant donut!
For $5, we thought the donut was a STEAL! It feeds a family of 4 or 5, easily. Back home in DC, a regular sized donut, at a specialty shop or bakery with run us $3-$5, so we were ecstatic. When a family asked us how much it cost, I excitedly proclaimed that “It's only 5 bucks!!” The mom rolled her eyes and said “oh...onnllllyyyyy $5” and walked away.
Meh...you win some, you lose some.
Maybe being from an expensive (over-priced) city has it's benefits. Not once, at Universal, were we sticker shocked by the prices. $7-$8 for a beer is the same we would pay at most bars in the city, and those bars aren’t in WWOHP. Donuts that cost $5 - not a problem. Entrees that cost $15-$30 – same ol', same ol'.
Anyways, back to the donut! DH and I ate about ¾ of the donut before we threw in the towel. With sugar running through our bloodstreams, it was time to head to Krustyland. It appeared that DH's Dramamine was working like a charm, not a bit of sickness. When we were exiting we saw the whole Simpsons Clan posing for photos, with only one other family waiting in front of us.
After Simpsons we headed over to MIB. We were both were really bad at MIB and could never figure out when to press that big red button
Still beat DH both times though!
More Springfield,USA photos...just because!
