Selling DVC

A friend of ours is wanting to sell his points he tells me that Disney will not buy back his points. Is that correct?

That is correct. He will need to go to a company that specialises in Disney DVC resale. There are quite a few to choose from. I think some advertise on these boards.

Just tell them to do a goggle search "DVC resale" or they could use the disboard sponsor.

Disney has the right of first refusal. That means your friend is responsible for finding a buyer and negotiating a contract, but Disney has the right to review the terms of the deal and step in as the buyer. Disney gets to take the best deals and also reclaims points through foreclosure. They have no need or desire to negotiate directly with an owner.

Someone PM'd me when we were selling, and they told me it would be easy to sell our points ourselves. Nope. Fortunately we had 2 contracts to sell, and so the for second contract, we went through a resale company. Well worth the commission.

There are several excellent brokers that specialize in DVC. They will make the sales process as easy as possible. In exchange for that, they take 8% to 10% of the sales price as a commission. Since the percentage varies from one broker to another, it pays to check out the websites of a few of those brokers to get the best deal on the commission. There are a few other sales-related fees in addition to the commission.

As supersnoop said, Disney has no interest in buying back points from owners, though they did offer to buy back BCV contracts (and ONLY BCV) a few years ago. The problem was, Disney offered just slightly over half of what that same contract would sell for on the resale market ($50-$55/pt from Disney vs $90/pt on the resale market) so it was a bad deal!

I called MS last week to talk with a CM in accounting, there was an option if you want to sell your contract to Disney.

Is this new? I am thinking the purchase price from Disney would be considerably less than on the resales market. Maybe in foreclosure situations it would work.

I know that several years ago, you couldn't do that. We wanted to sell our points so we could buy at a different resort. I called our guide to ask about selling, and he said we couldn't sell back to Disney. So we had to buy points where we wanted, then sell off our "old" points.

Could you provide some additional context? Was this an option on the automated phone menu? Or something the CM mentioned? I think you might have misunderstood.

I would only used the brokers that get mentioned on the disboards to sell your friends DVC contract. There are so many scam artists in the timeshare business. One of the best things about DVC is your ability to sell your timeshare relatively quickly.

Good point. Maybe it's an option on the phone menu that, if selected, provides information to direct the caller to contact one of the Disney-recommended brokers.

I believe they have been known to when they are short on points, but the price per point they will give you for a no hassle sale was so low as to be insulting - and it had to be one of the resorts where Disney is perpetually low on direct sale points.

i.e. if you want to sell you BCV points for $50 a point, Disney will not make you bother involving a broker. (I don't know if that was the price).

I sold a 270 BWV contract by myself years ago. In fact, the offer was not enough to pass ROFR. But, Disney allowed my buyer to pay $2 more per point to get the contract. I know this is unheard of but it happened. Since then I have routinely bought and sold contracts through very good brokers.
