One thing to note: My daughter reported as she rode the monorail past the lodge on Wednesday, someone on board shouted "Timber!" getting everyone's attention as a large tree was felled in the area near the waterway. As I passed it yesterday on the bus, it certainly looks like they're starting to clear land for the villas on that side, although I was surprised to see them clearing so close to the roadway. Time for me to pull up that development map and take another looksie.
Yes, they have started clearing trees on the other side as well (left side of the diagram below). However, I didn't capture any photos.
World Drive runs just off the bottom left of the diagram (not visible in this cropped version).

I also thought the location odd/bad. Staying at the Wilderness Lodge, the last thing many of us want to see and hear is a busy roadway. I'm sure DVC will categorize these cabins so we will be able to reserve quieter units since these ones on the connecting waterway will have a view of the fireworks and monorail and most certainly a higher point per night price.I am really concerned with the cabins on the left side, bottom of the site plan. They are really close to world drive and as I posted in another thread, the view is not the best. I would hate to pay the premium price to stay there and have that view compared to the views on the other side of the lodge.
I just stayed at VWL Dec 6 thru the 12. It was a total waste of time, points and airfare. I had an awful time. No place quiet, the pool was crowded, we got to listen to powersaws from our patio. I could do that at home. I find it incredible that Disney charges you full points and won't transfer you to a different resort despite several requests to do so. I am seriously considering selling my points. I will never stay at WVL again. I may never go to a Disney resort again.
sorry to hear about your bad time Tinkerbelljean. I was there on Thursday and Friday last week and had the opposite experience. We were in and out of the resort a couple times each day between parks. While I did not like my first floor construction view, I thought the noise level was pretty good, with Saturday almost being none. The noise level was the worst when we first arrived Thursday afternoon, so maybe we caught the end of what was real bad.I just stayed at VWL Dec 6 thru the 12.
