Anyone camp near Pigeon Forge?

So a federal campground is out? Most don't have pools.

unless there is some other water feature there. my kids live in the water all summer

Haven't been there, but the closest campground to Pigeon Forge in Great Smoky Mountain NP is Elkmont Campground (about 16 miles). There's no fee to enter the park. There are shallow creeks going right through the campground, and the following says it's safe to wade/swim in it (other than maybe watching out for the occasional poisonous water moccasin snakes). The pictures of the campground look pretty nice, but I suppose the amount of shade will depend on the particular site. It's only $20 a night. I'm a big fan of national park campgrounds, but then I sort of like to get away from KOA-style campgrounds with lots of amenities. You might need to worry about bears and food storage, although I understand they're not Yosemite bears.

How near Pigeon Forge would you prefer to be? And is it a tent, pop-up or RV site that you're looking for?

We go to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and surrounding area, at least once a year. Probably for about 10 years now.

If you are looking for more of a KOA-type feel, there is a KOA right near Dollywood. From the road it looked OK to me!

Wish I could remember the name... But, if you want the RV camp-lot, with the pool, close to everything (but out of the way) look for the one across the street from the Mainstay Suites. I think it is Pine Mountain Road?

ETA:
Here is the link.
I am not sure if there might be access to the nice pool area at the Mainstay across the street or not. You should call and ask. We have enjoyed the Mainstay.

Townsend, TN is billed as "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies" and is about 20 minutes from Pigeon Forge if you take Wears Valley Rd (if you stay in Townsend I can give you more details on that, it's really easy).

Tremont is my favorite in Townsend, it's right outside the park entrance, is shady, has a pool and you can get a site right on the river. They don't have a very impressive website, which is a shame because the campground is nice.

If you stay in the park itself, none of the campgrounds have pools but you can swim in the creeks. We've visited all the park campgrounds and prefer Cades Cove Campground. Also, the park campgrounds don't have showers.

In Pigeon Forge itself, our oldest son stayed here and really enjoyed it.

They have shaded sites and a pool.

I could talk for hours about the area, like Disney, but I don't want to overwhelm you. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'd be happy to answer them if I can. :)

our reunion is in Townsend I believe. You won't bore me! I'm looking for any info out there. Of course we want to do some touristy stuff but also not spend a fortune during our time there.

I second Townsend. We have been staying at the KOA in Townsend for 20 years. It's my home away from home. Very, very clean. Lots of activities including a pool. The friendliest staff you'll ever meet. Lots of shaded areas. There is an awesome playground if you're taking any kids. They have tent and RV sites.

We stayed at the KOA in Pigeon Forge. It was very clean, very shady, nice pool, close to everything, with a very nice park located beside of the campground. That being said, the lots were TOO close together. Actually our slide out and our neighbor's slide out "spooned" each other. I was shocked that we were that close. I took a picture and there was about an inch of daylight that could be seen. If you go there, get a pull through for big RVs--they were very spacious.
