For me, AK is sort of 'meh'. If you have not seen the park or attractions in a long time, then I would say definitely do it. There are some really amazing individual attractions that are fun to experience. My family does love Dinosaur, Bugs Life, Everest, Rapids, Safari, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo the musical, the petting zoo, etc..
Really, if you want to observe animals, you're probably likely to have a closer encounter at your local zoo. There are some really awesome animals to see at the AK, but a lot of the high profile ones (like the elephants you mentioned) are on the Safari. The problem with the safari is that it's just a drive-through the savannah and, at best, you only get to see your favorite animal for about a minute. There are a couple of trails, like Maharaja Jungle Trek for tigers, bats, and birds or the Pangani one for gorillas and meerkat, that you can walk to see some other animal exhibits, but the trails are very long and views vary. I can appreciate that "exhibits" such as these are better for an animal's quality of life though! But, children expecting to get up-close views of their favorite animals might be greatly disappointed.
I just thought it might help to see another point of view as to why some people don't rate AK as high on the must-do park list. As I stated at the beginning though, there are still many reasons to love AK, especially if you don't get to go often. It's definitely a park worth experiencing at least once.....but we go to a great zoo all the time at home and see the animals.
You got to let them do it once, then make a decision for the next time. When our kids were that age they loved it. There is enough to do to occupy your day and have a good time. Our kids are grown and on there own now. We are coming down in a couple of weeks and plan on a day at AK, just because we love it.Ok, we plan on going as a famiily of four in April. Our daughters are 10 and 14. We did not go to AK in 2011 when we were there, I'm not sure why. DH and I went in 1998 on our homeymoon, and that was it.
We will not have park hopper passes, so I am wondering if we should bother, or go to another park that we know we love. I thought we could perhaps go there on our arrival day, as we won't feel like doing a long day on the first day. We have 5 days, so plan on doing MK twice, then HS and Epcot just once each.
I would love to see the tree again, I thought it was pretty amazing the last time I saw it, but I'm wondering if the girls will be bored. Our youngest does love animals, especially elephants. I'm not sure if there are any elephants there?
Thanks in advance for your opinions!
As much as I LOVE LOVE LOVE AK (and I do love it), I would re-think that cutting Epcot short thing in April. Isn't Flower and Garden going on at that time?
