Though it occurs to me that I'm following the "to finish upright" plan so maybe the total newbie plan is different. But I was just coming in here to be proud of myself that I am back on the plan and did today's (well the plan calls for it tomorrow) 6 miles. That's as far as I have ever gone, and the last time I hit it I hurt myself and I've been resting my foot for a couple weeks.
I've been looking at novice training plans from Hal Higdon, Jenny Hadfield, and marathonrookie.com, and none require more than maybe 5 or 6 miles as a long run by this point. So with 7 pp would not be behind per any of these... Max I've done to date is 6.25mi.

You should be fine if you're already doing 7! I have never run a whole long race but always do a run/walk.

You won't need a cab - pick up an expo bus from POR. They should run regularly, I want to say every 20-30 mins.

In pretty sure I was around 7 at this time last year - sounds like you're right on track!

Friday: DHS and then to the expo
Saturday: AK then lunch at 11 and then back to resort to rest before the race.
Sunday: fly home and cry

Anyone see anything in my plans that I should be concerned about?
It's so individual, but, for me, that's an awful lot if time on your feet before the race. But I really can't do any park touring in the heat in the days before a race without my race suffering. Plenty of others do it, though!

WTG - you should be proud!

~~~~~~~~~~
I kinda stopped by to be excited, too... ran 8.5 this morning at my best pace yet for that distance! What a difference some rain, clouds and a10-degree temp drop makes.
Hi everyone! OK, I did it...I registered for the Happy Haunted 5k! This is my first 5k ever and I hope it's a starting point for longer events. I'm so nervous, though!!! Is there anyone here who ran the same race last year that could provide tips? I'll take anything!
My husband & I are registered for the 5k. We did so about a week ago.
As of yesterday, I'm pacing about 13:36 mile. I was at 14:30ish a month ago so I'm improving.
All Star Sports reminder
With all the itinerary talk, I just wanted to make sure that everyone staying at ASSports is aware that the food court is under refurb, and won't be fully operational. Not a huge deal, but you might need to head to Music or Movies.
A personal preference for me are plans that do a couple of weeks where you build up, then a cutback week, then build up again until you hit your longest long run, then a taper down before the race. But I am 52, so I probably don't push as hard as some of the younger folks who may weigh in on your question.
Thanks again for this info! I've been spending time comparing Hal Higdon, Jenny Hadfield, and marathon rookie.com's half-marathon training programs. I like Jenny's program -- there is only one thing that gives me pause: the shorter runs are listed in minutes running rather than in miles. I guess that makes me nervous... like I might not end up covering enough MILES to actually be ready. I'd love to hear more about your (and anyone else's!!) experience with this.
Would it be crazy for me to use Jenny's plan, converting the minutes to miles at my expected race pace, for instance?? Anyone done this before? Results?
I do the opposite, run minutes instead of miles, and haven't had any problems with being adequately trained. I made my own plan with elements of Galloway, Higdon and Another Mother Runner, and do 2 mid-week runs in minutes: originally 30 each, pushed to 35 each, and am now at 40 each. Before all is said and done, they should be at 45 each by the race. Weekend long runs I do in distance.
What helps me wrap my head around a training plan's distance is viewing it in terms of incremental increases of around 10% per week (or every other week if one does cut-back weeks). That's total mileage over a week, so maybe your short runs get a little longer or maybe not, but your total mileage shouldn't go up more than about 10% from one week to the next.
Never realized that the ToT 10-miler was going to be while I was down there. Sadly I didn't get to sign up. I did see where there is still openings for the 5k. Should I go ahead and sign up for it? The 5th is my last day there.
Apologize if this has been asked before....Does anyone know the approximate times for corral placement for ToT?
I did my first 10K this past weekend...and even though it wasn't the fastest of times, I was pretty darn happy with it, so I am submitting it.
Just wondering cuz I want to make sure I have enough time to have fun while running without having to worry about being swept.
TIA!!
I think the 5K would be a lot of fun! If we weren't getting in just the day before, with the idea of getting up early for it making us want to be ill, DH and DS would sign up for the 5K.
Have you checked out rundisney.com? If you're interested in extending your stay (since the 10mile is run at night, starting at 10pm), there's a section on the site under registration that says "Limited The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ 10-Miler race entries are still available through Charity Groups and Travel Providers." And on that page, "charity groups" and "travel providers" are links.
Did anyone stay at the All Stars last year for TOT? I'm still hoping for a great AP rate at a mod, but if that doesn't happen, I guess I'll go value. (Honestly, I'd rather be off-site, but this is one race for which I want a bus, I think - just not comfortable driving that tired and walking an off-site parking lot that late, y'know?)
If you did go All Star, how was the race bus situation? Is it one bus that stops at all 3 All Stars, or did each get a dedicated bus? How were lines around 7pm? Lines going back after the race, say around 2am? Anything else I should know going in?
I'm getting antsy and want a room booked, lol!
