Family get their car broken into at mk and their gun goes missing

I'm law enforcement and I can tell you that with my agency I would be in HUGE trouble if I left a gun in an unattanded car (additionally, Disney likely has gun lockers for law enforcement to lock their guns in). The only exception would be if the vehicle had a locked vault attached to the car, which I am assuming was not the case. I am far from anti-gun. I carry one every day. I own others for hunting. Regardless, I would never drive to an amusement park with my family and leave one in the car. If I did make that mistake, I certainly wouldn't blame Disney.

The were travelling from MS which is probably around 8-10 hrs. in the car so I can understand travelling with a weapon. Whenever we travel out of state or even within within the state we travel with one of our handguns in the car. Yes, the gun is loaded and yes we have children that we travel with. When we leave the car the gun goes with us since DH has a concealed weapons license and once we get in the hotel/resort the gun goes into the safe and gets locked.

So having said that I can understand why their car was loaded with items including the gun. We have done that in the past since (then) it was only a 6-7 hr. drive home. We have also gone to the parks with our truck full prior to being able to check-in to the resort.

I am surprised that WDW doesn't have cameras in the parking lots. I don't blame WDW or the victims for this because you can have all the safety measures in the world set up and you can't completely prevent someone from trying (or succeeding) in committing a crime.

If the gun was the grandfather's, and he wasn't there, the gun didn't belong in the car, period. And, unless it was in proper storage, which we don't know, it didn't belong anywhere near a child.

maybe the Grandfather died & they got it from the will - alot of people still think about things belonging to who used own it - I have bowls that I still think of as Granny's

Why did someone call 911?

Was the gun bleeding profusely? Did the gun have a heart attack? Did it collapse? Was the car on fire?

This sounds like a non-event. And whoever called 911 should be forced to write "I will not call 911 unless there is an emergency" one thousand times.

Just a question when you and your Dh are driving around Florida with a loaded gun and kids where do you keep it.

The car was broken into they have to report it and get a police report for insurance. Plus they need to get on record they reported the gun just I case they didn't and it got used in a crime and they tracked it back to them.

Wow, always amazed at the differences in law from state to state. My Fil gifted my dh a gun for Christmas one year. We don't have to fill out any paperwork in Oregon. OT, sorry.

I can't find it all I find that it a law I thought I saw it some where but figured you would because here in ny you have to let them know within 10 days of moving to another licensing jurisdiction could get in trouble. It makes no sense for people not to switch names on guns if they Change ownership that will keep guns from getting into the wrong hands beauty if something happens they trace it back but if they don't have the right name then their wasting their time.

There are some reasonable reasons for the grandfathers gun to be in the car. We do not have all of the information to make a blanket statement one way or the other. Perhaps being as their Christmas gifts were in the car as well they may have been traveling to the grandparents home for a visit. Maybe the grandparents moved and the gun was left behind with them to bring it at a future time for some reason. I know when I moved from my parent's home I moved stuff out a little at a time over a few trips home to visit. When they came to visit they brought some down to us as well.

As a PP has posted we have gone to the park after checking out our last day as well. You don't have much choice but to load up before going unless you use guest services to store your belongings. Otherwise we always made sure that nothing valuable was left in our van. Even here at home we always try to make sure that everything is out of sight.

Exactly and here where I live you are told to call 911 now for everything. Some kids were throwing rocks at cars getting onto the highway one night and our van window was one that they hit. I tried calling the local police number about it and was told to dial 911 instead. Probably has to do with the calls all being recorded there.

Yeah a couple yeas ago someone backed into my moms car and left a dent she didn't call 911 because they left before we got their but after trying to go through insurance they said we had to have a police report. Then thankfully are neighbor is a police officer and was able to do a report for us but he did say next time to call when it happens because they be able to help us better because if he didn't help us we have to go to the station and wait for an officer to do it. So we now call 911 or the non emergency number and take care of it that way.


Just a note for people saying you shouldn't call 911 in Disney for car break ins when you call 911 you get reedy creek emergency services they ask you police fire or medical you tell them then they send the proper service towards you. Plus for every all they call Disney security and they respond to so you get both by calling 911 if you wait for Disney security then they have to call so your just cutting the middle man out.

911 is for emergencies.

"I need to fill out paperwork for my insurance company" is not an emergency.

911 lines are overloaded to the point that people sometimes have to wait. People who cannot breathe - 20 seconds can make all the difference in the world to these people.

Clogging 911 lines with bullcookies is a rotten thing to do.

Heart attacks, choking, strangers breaking into your house...those things are emergencies. "Someone stole stuff from my car" is the kind of thing that can wait while you call 411 for the non-emergency number to the police department.

The reason we have 911 is so that:
1) people can remember the emergency number
2) emergency calls can be given priority and jump to the head of the line, saving seconds for people to whom seconds means the difference between life and death

If you think that someone else who has an intruder in their home or a kid who cannot breathe should wait while your "I need to fill out paperwork" call is routed, you are wrong. I don't mean you, personally - I mean the general "you."

Whoever told them that they shouldn't have called 911 was correct.
