Strange reaction to my new Hobby
Hello Scrapbookers, I had a bizarre experience this Christmas, that I wonder if anyone else has heard, or at least can understand. It was our turn to host Christmas Eve, a tradition started by my late mother in law, and continued by each of her 5 children in successive years. After a few hours of eating, drinking, and some gift giving, I brought out the scrapbook that I just completed about our 2012 trip to Aulani, the new Disney resort. One SIL yelled "where are the pictures, there aren't enough pictures! Then something else negative, who knows what, and I finally answered "It's a scrapbook, not a photo album, and it's my new +#%^ hobby!" Hoping she was drunk or in diabetic crisis, but I certainly wouldn't criticize a new hobby for someone else, especially if I just was entertained by said person for several hours before that. Honestly. Relatives!
LOL, Deb |

you can't pick your in-laws - just your DH
hope you don't have to see them often I never been accused of not having pics - maybe having too many on a page

Oh my, so sorry that you received that type of reaction..
![]() Some people just don't get it... If you love scrapbooking just continue it for yourself and your family.. I wouldn't share with the inlaws again with their negativity on your craft! |

I'm sorry your husband's family didn't understand. I also would not share with them in the future, but would enjoy the scrapbooking for myself now & in the future. Every family has at least one!! The good news for you is that they are only 1/2 of your family, maybe your side will be more supportive or at least less vocal?

I am so sorry your inlaws don't understand what scrapbooking is about. Mine don't either and shake their heads everytime they come over as the books are everywhere. Don't let them deter you from doing something you love!

On the flip side...some people who are jealous show it by critizing. Maybe they are just so envious that you have this wonderful remembrance of a special trip and they are setting there thinking about all the photos they wished they had done that with! As long as you enjoy it, that's ALL that matters!

My DSis HATES having her photo taken - and has made her younger sons all anti-pic too - so even taking pics can be hard. She does take photos but NEVER prints them or even shares them online
![]() All my family and most of my friends are bemused by scrapbooking (maybe they just can't read my writing ) They cannot understand why I need so many sheets of patterned paper and tools, why I send large boxes of bits of paper (aka swaps) across the Atlantic and why "putting photos in an album" can occupy many days and the whole dining table. DH also has a "thing" about looking back so it tends to be me and DS(13) (DS19 is at Uni) looking back over the memories. But I enjoy making them, and I enjoy looking at them (and I enjoy spending money on supplies, but we won't go there......). I'd rather do this than watch sport on TV! |

I'm sorry you had a bad reaction to your new hobby. That is a bummer.
I have to admit, I have had similar reactions from various family members. Most of my family has not been interested at all. I have made albums and things for a few in the family who appreciate it but mostly, I just keep my hobby to myself. Sometimes, I wonder why I even bother as no one but me even looks at my albums. I hope someday my family will learn to appreciate all the memories I've kept. eta: also, that is why I like to be involved in online forums such as this where I can discuss and share with like minded hobbyists! |
