I am so glad you posted the link to this thread in that pay off debt thread on the Budget Board. I almost started the January No Buy thread on the Budget Board today because I couldn't believe nobody had started it yet.
I had NO IDEA it was here, and it never crossed my mind to look for it in the Crafts Forum. I used to post on the No Buy thread quite often, but drifted away from it. I wanted to start again this year. I always keep track of my spending in my daybook, even when I wasn't posting on No Buy. I'll read through the thread to catch up, and I'll post my numbers sometime today.

This is the forum I moderate so it was easy for me to start one here. I made one in Dec but I was the only one posting on it. LOL

![]() I suppose it makes sense to put it here if you moderate here....I'm just glad you mentioned it on the Budget Board or it might have been months before I found it! I'm not even sure the people who were regularly posting on No Buy at the same time I was regularly posting are still around the DIS at all. I rarely see any of them. But now I get to know all you crafty people! ![]() I have tried to scrapbook in the past, but it's more like a hobby I say I do than one I actually do. I need to get it together. I put all the photo stuff in plastic boxes back in late August because the weather people were saying Isaac was going to blow up to a Category 3 overnight, and we were preparing to evacuate. Well, it didn't intensify and we ended up riding it out at home, but my scrapbook stuff is still in the bins....

January 2013 No Buy
Goal: 15 $0 Days 1: $48.62 Groceries, lunch in MSP airport 2: $0 3: $46.00 McDonald's , Lowes, Ross 4: $67.63 Walmart (Groceries & "misc" )5: $0 6: $18.18 Groceries 7: $0 8: $0 9: $0 10: $7.85 Shirt for work (required), school lunch milk 11: $2.25 snoball 12: $124.98 Popeyes , sneakers, 2 Mickey shirts from the Disney Store (it's closing for renovations and 50% off!), Walmart.com (cheap phone to use for the next month), Gas ($22.07 - $3.05/gal)Total: $315.51 $0 Days: 5 So $80 of today was on a pair of sneakers and two shirts. I didn't want to spend money on sneakers this month, but I realized that my current ones are falling apart. I've worn them almost daily since I bought them last March. I ended up at Famous Footwear and found a pair I liked that fit for $60 with tax. The shirts are cute and I can wear them on my Disneyland trip coming up in a few months, but I totally did not need them and they were an impulse buy. I'm a little annoyed with myself over these; I was doing quite well so far this month with only buying things that were on my list.

Jan is a month to be financially disciplined so there is money to spend again next Dec. ![]() My goal is NO silly/impulse spends. Driving to visit elderly in-laws costs gas but is a good spend. Buying more coffee at the oasis and then getting a donut to go with it is a silly spend. (i have a thermos). Buying dinner for our daughter's birthday is an annual joy. Going out for lunch with a friend is an impulse spend. I will have months with an easier target. But Jan and Oct are my two NO spend months. |

My stuff was in Bins for a long time after Irene. We loaded up all the pics and albums and put them in the RV and took them with us to Buffalo. I think the last bin of albums came out of the RV 3 months later. Hopefully we can inspire you to do scrappy stuff again, but you have to use your stash on those no buy days!!! That's what we try to do. Quote:
I spent a lot more than that yesterday. DS16 and DS12 need new dress shoes and sneakers. I got DS16 done but not DS12. We will hit Kohl's this afternoon. We also got some much needed jeans for everyone but DS12 and myself, I bought mine with a gift card in Dec and I will get DS12's at Kohl's too. good job!!

We only spent $9 on admission to my son's basketball game. I think tomorrow will be a no buy day though!

Ugh, this weekend was a disaster. DH is on a tear. Gotta figure out what we spent...
I'm home with a sick kid today, so aside from the few things I picked up this morning on my way to get her from school, OJ, chicken noodle soup, etc., today should be nothing. |

Hope Morgan is feeling better soon. We had what Megan had going around the house since Thursday. I swear my kids must lick the doornobs at school.
Today is definitely a no buy day. Spent enough yesterday! Tomorrow is oldest DS birthday. He will officially be an adult! What do you give to an 18 year old boy? Cash? Do I bake him a cake, or is that not cool? My mom will be baking him a cake and making his favorite dinner on Friday night. Does that mean I get out of baking a cake or am I still obligated? He already said he would be mad if I did something stupid and made a big deal out of it. Teenagers!

Baking a cake is not a big deal. Even if we're having a party on a different day, I always bake a cake for the actual day
Cash is king. Always the right size and color

WE always have a cake.. we don't always see DsS21 on his birthday so the next time he is home on break we celebrate his birthday w/ cake and ice cream... PJ was away at college this year for her birthday so the week before was parent weekend and we had cake and ice cream at the hotel...
Cash is always good.. that way they get what they want unless they have asked for something... We send money to DsS21.... that way he can get what he needs at school.. PJ this year asked for an updated IPod so she got that... next year, she'll probably get cash... |

and if he gets upset about the cake.. .tell him that it isn't for him.. you are actually celebrating another year of his life and the fact that he is now an adult!
It's mom and dad's party now!!
