UY popularity?

Are there certain use year times that are more popular than others ? What use years are the easiest to work with.

Currently we vacation to DW in November or December. We are a year and a half away from moving to Orlando. At that point I could see us doing long weekends during the summer. Any advice on a good use year would be appreciated as we are about 3 months away from purchasing our first points

It is best to have a use year just before you normally travel to WDW. In our case, we normally travel between December and April and would rarely go between Sept and Nov. For us a use year of December works best (although October would have been fine also). This way, if we cannot go during our normal times, we have plenty of time to bank our points. If you want to bank your points, you must do so before the last four months of your use year. In our case, that would be by July 31st.

Decide when you are most likely to travel to Disney or alternatively least likely to go and pick your use year accordingly. Once you move to Orlando, it may become less of a concern to you.

Good luck and happy shopping. It is a very exciting time!!

DVC offers UY months in different proportions - no one really knows why. it's best to have a UY month that falls right before you usually travel, but as you say, travel patterns change and no UY month covers every travel period. you ideally never want to travel in the last 3 months or so of your UY.

an oct or nov UY is best for your current situation but you may want to look for a june UY to better fit your future plans.

remember that all of your pts through 2040 and beyond are already added to your account when you buy the contract. you can call at 11 months out based on your home resort, not UY...UY month has nothing at all to do with when you call to book.

so you really have a couple of issues limiting you:

1) UY tells you when your pts are valid for stays.

so for a silly example, if your UY month is oct, then your 2020 UY pts are valid for stays from oct 1, 2020 through sept 30, 2021.

2) you can only bank ahead one year or borrow from one year ahead. and once you bank or borrow pts, they cannot be moved again.

so if you borrow your 2020 pts into 2019, they would be valid for stays beginning on oct 1, 2019. but your 11 month window for oct 1, 2019 doesn't open till nov 1, 2018, so your 2020 UY pts are not available for booking until that point.

use year month is mostly an issue if you need to cancel.

some examples of traveling right before or after your UY starts:

if you have an oct UY and a sept 2013 trip and you need to cancel 60 days out (in july), your banking window closed on may 31, 2013 so you'd have to use all of the pts in the reservation before they expire on sept 30, 2013.

if you have an oct UY and an oct 2013 trip and you need to cancel 60 days out, your banking window won't close until may 31, 2014 so you'd have until then to decide whether to use current year (2013) pts for a reservation in that UY or else bank them to the next year. (you'd still need to use banked and borrowed pts by sept 30, 2014. as stated in #2 above, you can only move pts one time.)

if you have an oct UY and a sept 2013 trip and you need to cancel 5 days out, the pts would turn into "holding" pts so you'd have to use all of the pts in the reservation subject to a 60-day-out limitation - but that won't matter since they expire on sept 30, 2013...which is less than 60 days out.

if you have an oct UY and an oct 2013 trip and you need to cancel 5 days out, the pts would turn into "holding" pts so you'd have to use all of the pts in the reservation subject to a 60-day-out limitation - but at least you'd have 12 months before they expire on sept 30, 2014 to decide what to do with them.

more info about UY is here if you need it (you may want to bookmark this thread for later reference):

We travel at different times every year. We like to hit the different Disney seasons to see decorations, special events, etc. UY for us has never been an issue. I would say that we have always been planners and usually boot at the 11 month window.

I agree with earlier poster that it depends on when you normally travel. If you tend to travel at different points of the year it most likely doesn't matter much.

Each resort has a different distribution of points in the different UY.

Here is the complete distribution.

If you are uncertain on two or more UY, I would suggest to buy the one with more contracts in the resort you are interested. This way it will be slightly easier to find an addon later or to sell the contract (more people with the same UY are more potential buyers).

In July 2012, updated charts were published by DVCNews showing the distribution of points by Use Year. Here is a link to the updated article: http://dvcnews.com/index.php/dvc-pro...on-by-use-year. Zavandor's link is to the original article from April 2011.
