Official 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon Thread - Take 2

Did my 8 mile walk today. Windy but sunny. Had a time of 16:20 minute mile. That was with lots of Cincinnati hills! I get so nervous every year about being swept. Hasn't happened yet, but I've moved up to the 65 year old age group so I am getting older. To compensate, I have been doing a lot more weight training, core strengthening, and stationary bike work. My daughter found out that she is pregnant a week after we registered, so my race partner won't be with me. My husband tells me I'm ready and I worry too much! Hopefully, he's right.

The excitement of the race will carry you through! I ran today - 8 miles - thought I was running in thigh high mud. It's a week since the WDW half and I guess I'm still recovering. I'm in the 50+ group - I worry about that stuff too. You're doing what I need to do...more core training. My resolution this year was to do more pilates and yoga. Cincinnati? Have you done the Flying Pig?

My costume has been decided. At least for the PHM. I need to finalize for the the 5K. I also need to figure out what size I need for both of these. I've lost some weight since I started running, and I'm finding it trickier to judge sizes now.

I've found that the strengthening exercises have helped a lot and have definitely altered my pronation: I still roll in at the very end of my stride when walking, but not during my run intervals. I wound up in low- (bot not zero-) drop shoes with a little extra arch support, but no full stability. I alternate between Brooks PureFlow with better arch-supporting insoles and Brooks PureCadence with the insoles that came with them. Both seem to be good and I haven't yet been able to pick a favorite to wear for the race! I also read somewhere about taking good ol' white athletic tape (though I'd think duct tape would be good, too) and rolling it flat around a couple fingers, over and over until its thickness is about the same as the dip in your hips from the scoliosis. Stick that under the insole in the heel of your "shorter" leg's shoe. Because it's in the heel, it doesn't help when I'm running, but it's made a difference when I walk - I definitely don't overpronate as much (maybe not at all) on the left, which seems to keep the ITBS at bay. Worth a try!

They are $125. Pretty average price for a running shoe...I figured they would have been more expensive.

In my experience, our Fleet Feet is great for that. If you buy something, try it and hate it, they will take it back/exchange. Hope it helps your shin splints. I've had them and they hurt!

I hope all my Boston-princesses got out either yesterday or the first half of today for your runs! Yesterday was 10mi for us, right near my race-goal pace of 10 min miles.

I am getting worried about the temps for the PHM. Last year was great @ 55, but I'm worried the way things are going this year it could be 70+! (It was so warm in Jan when we were there for Marathon weekend.) After doing the CC 5K, I realized it was really helpful to have a few runs to re-acclimate to the heat, which is impossible since we can't leave until after work on Friday. (I haven't bought plane tickets yet either, but I plan to this week.) Hopefully it won't be too hot!
