Try running with ONY the cell antenna on... so no wifi or 3g/4g antennas. The battery life jumps up tremendously. I have run 3 marathons with an iPhone using RunKeeper and the furtherest the battery use went down was maybe 35%. Oh, and once you hit start at the line, push your screen off button so the light is not on.

I have a mophie for my 4S and it pretty much doubles the life of my phone. I do not use RunKeeper, but I do use the FindFriends app so that my wife can follow my location as I run a race. I used this during the Chicago Marathon and even without the Mophie, the phone still had more than half its life at race finish. The mophie does add some weight to the phone so that might make it too heavy for an armband-type holder.

hello my fellow athletes!

i'm still fighting this back of the knee pain. i was cleared to walk this weekend for 50 min. i did that and it was great. my PT said i could do a run 1 min, walk 4 min for 50 min today. popped out of bed and was out the door just a few minutes later....and i made it 25 minutes before having to stop because of the pain. it's been sore all day. i'm so discouraged. i have an appt with my ortho tomorrow (he ordered an MRI last week but of course insurance hasn't ok'd it yet) and then PT again friday. PT said maybe i'm just not ready yet to run. but with only 5 weeks i'm really scared about this.

i'm starting to think that maybe i should just rest for the next 5 weeks and just see what happens at the marathon. my highest was 18 miles.

thanks for letting me vent. i hope everyone stays well and healthy these next 5 weeks. i hope to see each and everyone one of us with medals around our necks.

Has anyone else dealt with shin splints before? How long was your recovery? This has been almost 4 weeks for me now.
I had severe shin splints this spring. It felt like someone was taking a hammer to my legs when I was running. I stopped running for 4 weeks, got fitted for new shoes, bought The Stick to use on my calves, and shortened my running stride a lot. And up until my knee problem 2 weeks ago, I haven't had any problems since!

Good suggestion. I asked them that, but due to customs regulations, they can't ship them to Canada. Bummersville!

I also looked there, and they only have them in size 5 & 6. Add the two shoes together, and we might have a fit!

I never knew about shopping.google.com - thanks for the heads up. I checked around there, and by the looks of it I could get a pair for $99.99, but by the time I paid shipping & duty, I'd be up around $140 - $150 anyway, so I might as well stick with Running Room and have them sooner rather than later. I might still try the 16s once I can try them on side by side, and hope for a day when it's not raining so I can maybe try them out in the parking lot.

You guys are great - thanks for your suggestions!!

I feel your pain, literally. Hang in there are get the knee feeling better. I cannot recall, do you have a brace/sleeve? It may be time to try the crutch just to compress the joint through the day and when able, on the run. Ask about the use of one. Many PT's (and really me) are not fans of continued use of appliances, but they have a place when you are trying to complete a goal in short order.

Worse come to worse, if you were to not run between now and Jan1, all would not be lost; as long as you have a minute a mile or so to spare. You long run and base should get your though the race.

If you have club access, you may want to try a row machine, swimming, water running to help keep your base up.

So how many days of parks are you guys doing?
There will be dozens of groups and hundreds of people doing DATW, so yes, you'll probably have to ask if we're the WISHers. I'd like to say we'll be wearing our custom Goofy shirts from our last Goofy, but who knows what the weather will be like. Anyway, just ask. Other groups might have seen us along the way and know where we are.

As for the parks, we'll be doing one day at Universal on Thursday (love their coasters) and two days at Disney. DATW will be one of those days. We get there early to ride some of the rides before meeting up with everyone else at Canada.

Appropos of nothing......I still have a few (about 15) WISH temp tattoos that Jeff Da Runner gave me a couple years ago. They are small (Shown below next to an old WISH nametag) I'll bring them along to the meet for people to take.

Hello, Everyone
Question on corrals and pace teams. I do not have a previous race time and so will be in one of the last corrals. I have been doing all my long training runs @ 9:15 pace and hope to do the marathon 4:00:00 to 4:20:00. My question is: In the corral that I will be placed will there be pace teams for these times. I am from Northern Canada and there are no 10k races this time of year to get an official time.

Have any of you ever gotten a cortisone shot before a race? How long did its effects last? I've been going to PT for two weeks for hip bursitis (we learned that I'm knock kneed and essentially just not built for running. My therapist thinks I have femoral acetabular impingement syndrome, which is basically where the hip bone doesn't rotate smoothly in the socket) and my therapist thinks I'd be a good candidate for getting a well-placed cortisone shot just to help me get through the rest of training and race day.

I've read about the risks and this definitely isn't something I would do more than once—nor do I intend to ever train for a full marathon. I'm kind of looking at this shot as a last ditch effort to get me through my first and only marathon.

I just got the green light yesterday to start running again. My plan right now is to see how things go tonight and over the weekend, and if I start experiencing pain again to email my therapist and ask her to consult with my ortho (they work in the same clinic) to see about getting the shot.

Without a proven 10K or longer race you will most likely be in a corral behind the 5hr/11:27 pace group that I believe is the last group.

My guess would be that the 4:00 pace team will be in the back of Corral A or the front of Corral B. the 4:15 will also most likely be in Corral B. Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Hopefully, you put something down for time (like a 5:10) instead of a blank. That will move you up a corral. Otherwise, is is a bob and weave run for the first few miles.
