Apparently every adult in the U.S went shopping Black Friday
Someone must have done the shopping for my wife and I. We were at work.

I think it was over the whole weekend.
I know my DH and I went to Home Depot for a few things on Saturday morning. Only a couple of them were weekend sales, most were items needed to finish projects around the house. |

Nope, not me. I stayed as far away as possible from any store on Friday.

I worked from 5:45am Friday until 6pm yesterday. So I know I wasn't shopping. Maybe someone did my Christmas shopping for me? I could only hope.

That number would also have to include those in prisons and individuals who are mentally handicapped/ committed to institutions who cannot go shopping. Nice work CNN.

I think that CNN's statistic is only 47% correct.

Shopped online. Some sites were giving Black Friday prices online. And some sites added more sales all weekend.
Oh, and DH took several emergency trips to Walgreen's/Target several times to get working lights while decorating the house this weekend.

We did all of our Pre-Thanksgiving shopping last Tuesday and Wednesday.
Then I didn't set foot in another store (for shopping purposes - I work retail, and had to work ALL weekend, but I didn't shop after or before work) until yesterday afternoon. And that was just for necessities like laundry soap and shampoo. There wasn't one deal I saw advertised, even at my own place of business, that I thought was worth the hassle and the lines. And I am broke.

This is a great example of a meaningless statistic. What it's "sort of" telling us is that there were around 247 million sales transactions over the Black Friday weekend. But that's not informational, there are too many variables. How many of those transactions were the same person in multiple stores, or even the same person in the same store? How many of them were for Black Friday holiday shopping and how many were just people who were doing home improvement projects, or shopping for supplies for decorating for the holidays, or just replacing Johnny's tennis shoes because they fell apart?
A better statistic would be total sales for the weekend, better yet, compared to trends over the last 5 to 10 years. Only comparing sales to last year also isn't really a good statistic, because last year may have been an awesome year, so even though this year was pretty good, it still looks like sales are down, or last year may have been a dreadful year, so even though this year is bad, it looks like they're better.

CNN is a joke. As well as most new agencies.
