Both my parents' grandparents were born in Quebec. I think you have to go back about 7 generations to get back to France, though. I read about your trip to Quebec (and Maine!). I love my heritage. I just wish I would have kept up with my language skills as I understand French better than I speak it. My Mom laughs at me and my lack of an accent. I hope you and your family also have a very Happy New Year!!!

I really tried hard to try to take pics before I ate anything. I think I'm getting better at food porn!

I can now empathise with you Karen as the lovely flu hit this household this week. Peter actually ended up in the emergency room last night. He has bronchitis and a sinus infection. Yeah, when we get sick, we have to turn it up a notch, huh? He's now on antibiotics and I've turned the corner and am now starting to feel better. Holy cow, I was sick!!

OMG!!! I have news!!! One of my chickens laid their first egg today!!!!! Peter seems to think it was Sweet Pea's but I didn't see it happen, so I don't know. I'm so excited. I did take a flashlight to it to see it it was fertilized, and I don't think it is, but I don't dare crack it to eat it. I'll have to get over that! I'm just tickled about this!!! I know, I know.....it doesn't take much to excite me!

Well hello everyone!! My household was struck by the flu pretty bad from December 23rd throughout just recently. I started coming down with what I thought was the flu the Sunday before Christmas ---- the day I was hosting Peterís family for Christmas for the first time. Great! Oh, the party went well and we all had a great time, but I was feeling like crap! I sucked it up and made all the food including my first toutierre (pork pie) and my first batch of fudge ever!

Peter has 2 brothers (one adopted) and 2 sisters so it would have been well over 26 people, but one of his great nephews had pnemonia and so that portion of the family stayed home. It turned out to be only 16 people. Whew! Did you guys know there is a game called Hot Grinch? Itís like hot potato but with a stuffed singing Grinch. That was a lot of fun.

Back to the Melancon family fluÖ.. Peter is the one who first decided it was time for him to go to the Emergency Room as he just wasnít breathing well. I didnít go with him as I was feeling ill myself and had to stay with Victoria. It turns out he had broncitis and sinusitis. Way to go Peter!! Might as well get both at the same time and get it over with. Well, the next night (about 2:30am) I was in so much pain that I asked Peter to bring me to the ER. What I feel horrible about is that we were in the middle of a snowstorm which dumped 8 inches of snow. He had to snowblow the bottom of the driveway where the snowplows make a big ole pile so that we could get out! And it was COLD!! I think 4 degrees or somethingÖ.Anyways, I was told I had blocked salivary glands and was given an antibiotic, painkillers, and told to suck on lemon drops to get the glands active again. I thought that was kind of weird as I was salivating just fine, but ok, youíre the doctor. Iíll listen to you! After a few hours I was sent home. During that day the pain was just getting worse and not better and I had taken 4 doses of the antibiotic which should have had some effect. So again around 3am (that seems to be the best time for me to be in pain!) I asked Peter to bring me back to the ER. This time my blood pressure was elevated and I was bawling like a baby! They put me in a room with a bed this time around and I had to get into a johnny. This time the doctor had me on an IV with more powerful antibiotics, pain medicine, anti-nausea medicine and he ordered a cat scan of my neck. I know they keep telling me what type of meds they were putting into the IV but honestly I lost track. Now, a little backstory here ---- when I was 24 they found a lump in my neck which turned out to be thyroid cancer. So, for me to get another lump in my neck was horrific!! All those old memories and feelings of what I had been through in the past came rolling back. It was awful. Poor Peter was trying to sleep in the chair as I was being monitored. I finally sent him home telling him to go home so he could really sleep as it was going to be a while that I was going to be there. The final diagnosis was an infection of the salivary glands probably a result of being so sick with the flu prior to that. I was given the option to stay in the hospital with the IV or he could prescribe the same strenth of antibiotic and pain meds to be taken orally. Send me home!!! For the last 10 days Iíve been on this antibiotic 4 times per day and feeling nauseated. Ugh. But, Iím a tough cookie and have been working right along. I did see my primary care physician yesterday and all the swelling is down, but I still have a lymph node thatís inflamed. He stated that should be back to normal within a month. Whew. Throughout all this Victoria was a trooper. Sheís 14 and can take care of herself mostly, but I was so proud of her just to let me sleep. I love that kid. So, there is my adventure. Not too much fun, eh? Oh, Victoria thought it would be fun to take pictures that first ER trip so here are some for your enjoymentÖ..

How puffy is that??!!! Ick!!!

Rocking my Disney pj pants!!!!

Ok, Christmas is now over so itís time to get Disney on the brain full time, not that I donít usually anyways! I have started stuffing my tip envelopes for the August trip. Iíve only done the Mousekeeping ones so far as money has been tight since before Christmas. OH, but look at what I had to buy for myselfÖ

It was on sale and I loved, loved, loved this movie!!! My family watched it the other night. So awesome!

I also have that mini-weekend trip coming up in March for PlayList Live. Nope, no Disney parks, no Disney hotel, but Downtown Disney and viewing the Water Parade and Wishes from the Poly beach!!! Weíve never done this and heck, Peter and I donít have to get up early to go to the parks, so why not?? Iíve never seen the Water Parade so that will be cool. Iím determined to get a little Disney thrown in there! I havenít done tip envelopes for the March trip yet. Do I do Mousekeeping envelopes even if itís not a Disney resort? I mean, I would leave a tip of course, but would they like Disney-ish envelopes? Anyone? Iím just not sure.

EGGCITING EGG EGDATE:
All of our hens are now laying. We have almost 2 dozen eggs now!!

Thatís my update for today. Worth the wait, huh? -----NOT!!!!

I am so sorry to hear of all the ER visits and sickies that have hit you guys! I'm glad you are feeling better now!

I laughed at the picture of cutie on top of Victoria in the chair! TOO CUTE!!!

I wouldn't do a Disney-envelope for the tips, probably. YAY for DTD and fireworks from the beach! I LOVE that you are sneaking some Disney in your March trip too!

Oh yeah, Cutie thinks she's a lap dog and will try to get into your lap if you let her! She was soooooo good during the party. It was her first time being around a crowd of people and she behaved beautifully (well, except for begging for food!)

I love that your hens are laying eggs... That is too cool...

I'm so sorry about the illnesses... and the trips to the hospitals...... not a big fan of them and I can understand why you wouldn't be thrilled... It takes a bit to feel like yourself again when you get an illness smack down... I remember having the flu several years back and I didn't begin to feel anything like normal for at least a month... Your immune system becomes compromised also so be extra careful...

Love your Merida

The Rockettes show looks amazing! I must go see that one day! Iím glad that you and your family had such a nice time in NYC. Congrats on getting put on the short list for the interview! and to you so that you get it! That is so egg-citing that your chickens are laying eggs! OK, I know that was super corny, but I couldnít help myself! Iím sorry that you guys had such a bad bout of the flu! Horrible! At least you made it through Christmas pretty much OK. That was wonderful that you got to host Peterís family and made that nice meal! That pork pie looks good! Iíve never even heard of such a thing, but it seems delish! That is so cool that you brought a Merida doll for yourself. At least youíre honest about it. Remember, I brought the doll for myself, but I said it was for True Merida is awesome, though! OK, I am typing this as I am reading along and I just noticed that you also said ďeggcitingĒ ! Now I donít feel as corny! All the cool people are doing it

I'm in! Getting ready to get all caught up with your PTR!
Did you realize that Southwest is going to start flying out of Portland on April 14th 2013? You may not have to transfer the rewards to Air Tran after all!

OH, the illnesses in the house were horrible! I am feeling 100% better now!! The hens are laying about 3 eggs per day and I've already had to give away 2 dozen as we just can't eat all the eggs!! We are having such fun raising them. Although, to go out and feed them & give them water tonight will suck as it's already only 2 degrees out with a bitter wind chill of I think minus 20!

Yes, Erin, we are the "cool" people for sure! I'm in the middle of scrapbooking the NYC trip but I haven't gotten up to the Rockettes yet. I just can't believe how awesome that show was! We are still having fun with our chickens!!

Yes, that flu that went around this year was a particularly nasty one. I've heard a lot of people even if they had the flu shot got sick. Now we are in the "deep freeze" along with a large part of the country. I hate the cold, but I live in Maine, so I have to put my big girl panties on and deal with it!

Yep, I certainly do know that SW if flying out of Portland starting in April. You didn't actually think I'd let a detail like that fly (get it --- fly!) by me, now did you. It was too late for our weekend in March, but I am definitely going to book SW for our August trip. We already have enough points for 3 one-way flights so I can guarantee we'll go, but maybe not be able to come home.....I wish!!

Here we sit at 200 daysÖ.ugh! This vacation is taking way too long to get here! Yes, I have the quickie weekend trip to Orlando in March (53 days I think??) but I want/need my 11 day vacation! ADR day is coming up in February and I think I have all those decided on! Iím comparing them to Erinís as I think itís been about 3 or 4 years now that weíve been reading each otherís reports and weíd really like to have a Dismeet this time around, as weíll both be in Disney at the same time. (Finally!!)

So, my schedule looks like this:
8/18 flying in --- dinner at Planet Hollywood
8/19 EPCOT --- dinner at Cape May
8/20 Animal Kingdom Ė- Tusker House for breakfast
8/21 Hollywood Studios --- OíHanaís for breakfast
8/22 Magic Kingdom ---- I have written down lunch at Be Our Guest, but Iím still fuzzy on this one
8/23 break day --- dinner at 1900 Park Fare
8/24 Hollywood Studios --- dinner at Sci-Fi Diner
8/25 EPCOT ---- dinner at Garden Grill
8/26 Sea World
8/27 Magic Kingdom ---breakfast at Crystal Palace
8/28 Choice Day --- undecided
8/29 Flying Home --- breakfast at Chef Mickeyís

I need to decide on 2 more table servicesÖ.Decisions, decisions. Now, let me look up Erinís scheduleÖ..8/24 I may see her at HS after dinnerÖ.Oh look, on 8/25 I may see her in Epcot after dinnerÖ..Alas, those are our only chancesÖ.BOO, HISS!!! Erin ---- are you still planning on staying at POP??

I BROKE!!! I COULDNíT TAKE IT ANYMORE and now both Peter and Victoria know we are staying at POR! I just couldnít keep that secret for that long! I think I did pretty good holding out for 5 months! They are both VERY EXCITED about going back. Peterís only issue was the walk and I told him that I have requested building 14 which is the closest to the food court and preferred, so hopefully we will get the Pixie Dust we need and get assigned that building.

Peter and I both have our W-2ís and other tax info so now itís a matter of doing our taxes. Yuck! But the sooner I know what the refund will be, the sooner I will be able to budget the remainder from my paychecks! Hopefully it wonít be that much, but you never know. The great news is now we have enough Southwest points for all three of us to fly down. Itís getting back that is in questionÖ..BUTÖ.if I do the taxes with Turbo Tax online I will earn 1,000 points. And, we are also planning on buying Victoria a new laptop (as hers is dying a slow and painful death) at Best Buy. If we do this through Southwest partner site, we would earn up to 10 points per $1, so if the computer was $500 letís say (we donít know which one yet) that would be 5,000 POINTS!!! Yep, that would just about get us all back home. So, Iím really working hard on not having to pay for the airfare, even though Southwest is really inexpensive, relatively speakingÖ.

In other news, Victoria has now been put on Prozac to help her depression and anxiety issues. Oh, you cannot imagine how upset I was to have to put her on medication, but I will do anything to help her and this is what the Dr said was the best plan. That, and to continue to go to counseling. Itís really been a struggle with her lately, sheís missed quite a bit of school and thus Iíve been pretty stressed out. I try to hide my own feelings so I can help her with hers. I just keep praying to God to get us all through this. I miss my happy girl! I would love to hear about otherís experiences with their children if any of you are willing to share. Or even your own experiences. Iím just glad I have you all to vent to. Sheís such a smart girl and this is one big hurdle for her to get over.

Iíll leave it at that for right now!!
