Nashville rush hour?

When exactly is Nashville rush hour? Would we be okay hitting Nashville around 4pm on a Thursday?? Would you recommend a different time? It can't be too much different because we want to leave our house around 7am or so, and we're about 8 hours from Nashville

Which way will you be going through Nashville? Every weekday...I-40 east through downtown backs up staring around 4:00. I-440 eastbound can start backing up as early as 3:30. I am not sure when I-65 southbound starts getting congested - but it will not likely be an issue until you get through Nashville. It will mostly be a LOT of traffic - not just sitting though.

Regardless, 4:00 is a better time to be driving through than 5:00-5:30.

we always took the 155 Briley Parkway around Nashville (coming from the north. sometime we would take 57 through Illinois, and approach Nashville from 24. sometimes 65 through Indiana and approach nashville from 65. )
either way we like the 155. It' goes past opryland, and after a bit, you do end up on a regular road for a couple stoplights. but nto bad at all. new thing you know, you hop right back onto 24 east and nashville is behind you.

(if you are coming from 65, make sure you don't take the ramp onto 31E!)

I second the Briley Pkwy/155 idea. You shouldn't have any trouble as long as you avoid I-440 at all costs...such a poorly-planned roadway! It isn't nearly big enough for the traffic it gets--the place is a parking lot as early as 3:00 and lasts through 6:00.

What about morning rush hour? We will be coming from Clarksville, TN on I24 after spending a few days visiting our daughter there and should be leaving Clarksville around 8am.

I guess I don't understand. On an 8 hour drive so what if it takes an extra 10 - 15 minutes to drive through Nashville because you hit the peak of rush hour.

Because its not 10 to 15 minutes its more like 45 to an hour if you get stuck in it, but at 4 you shouldn't.

What part of Nashville are you trying to get to? Or just passing through. If passing through, which direction?

If you get there before 5 you should be fine, but as others have said, you can always take Brily Parkway around past Opryland and down, though that's a little out of the way and can get just as backed up. Really the only way to avoid Nashville traffic is if you are going 40 to 24, then you can take 840 and cut out Nashville altogether.

Hate to hijack...but since it was mentioned, I actually am coming from Memphis and I40 but have found conflicting reports/maps about whether 840 is finished all the way across (from I40 to I24)...do you have any knowledge of this?

Worse comes to worse and I have to continue north to 440, I thought about a quick pitstop to see the Parthenon, but I would like to avoid going that far north only to have to head south again.

The stretch between I40 and I24 is now complete. It is pretty recent (within the past year) that the last section was completed, so that would explain the conflicting reports.

If you need to stretch your legs and you take Briley Pkwy it will also offer you the option to stop at the big Opry Mills mall. Grab a bite to eat walk for a bit and then hit the road again

Very easy to get to. Take look at the map below!
