There's also a lot of December birthdays in my family. DH and my birthdays are two days apart (his is the 9th, mine is the 11th). My dad's birthday is the 17th. Up here in the Northern Hemesphere, it must be the first nice day of Spring that does it.

I promised myself that I would never have a December baby. So DD25 was born on June 23...almost exactly six months away from Christmas.

However DD24 was born on September 15. I guess it was too much December partying.

Oh, and DD24 now has a wedding anniversary in December.

Melbourne City Christmas

It's been such a crazy month for me that I wasn't sure I was going to find time to check out some of the lights in the city this year. I normally try to do a couple of walks round the city on Friday nights in the lead up to Christmas but with work and everything else, its been near impossible to make the time.

Thankfully for me, DH decided that he wanted to go in this year; so we took a drive in on Sunday night.

We are in summer; so this is really around 7.30 pm at night.

Roughly the same spot after 10 pm.

This spot used to be the old city square. It didn't work as a square...but during Christmas, the city tree goes up here.

We didn't stay to catch the tree lit up at night.

We were too busy checking out the Town Hall.

This year, the city decided to light up the Town Hall. Kick off time was at 8.30 pm – it is lit! Just we can’t see it because it was still pretty light out.

We did get a flash of colour….that’s a horse drawn carriage going by!

And the Melbourne trams did provide for heavy relief every so often. Sometimes they stopped…..

….sometimes, they just flashed by.

Anyone reading this will know what excruciating pain the 30 minutes we had to wait for appropriate light was with a “Can we leave yet” DS12 in tow.

The day finally turned dark enough for us to make out the spectacular lighting of the town hall.

I was particularly taken with the reds and oranges.

Sparkle time!

This scene was my favourite. It was a Norweigian forest scene with a beautiful owl perched on the clock tower.

Presents anyone?

The building had been beautifully lit.

I was standing next to Control Central and was lucky enough to find two young guys playing with their computer. Turns out they were the programmers. It took them about 4 hours to put the program together.
But it took them 3 months to collect all the images and put them together!

I did push my luck with DS and we made him stay for another rotation. The light and the sky had hit that wonder dusky twilight time. So, here’s an encore presentation for you (and me) to enjoy!

The whole display takes about 10 - 12 minutes to complete a rotation. The city puts the show on from close on sunset through to 11 pm everynight from the last weekend in November through to Christmas Day.

I was really glad to have had this opportunity to catch it this year!

Christmas Eve Dinner Food Porn

Merry Christmas to everyone! I hope that your Christmas was filled with family, food and fun.

Christmas for 2012 has come and gone; with only memories and picture remaining for reminiscing. That.......and all the leftover food!

My family traditions are such that we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. Over the years, with respective partners and their families, my mother has worked out that to keep family peace in her offspring (me and my brothers), it was better for us to shift the feasting to the night before so as the respective partners could spend Christmas Day with their families.

Our family feasting includes the various cousins, their families and uncles and aunts. Whilst not gargantuan in proportion, we do end up with quite a horde to feed. This year was no exception.......we ended up with 22 adults and 12 kids for dinner.

Another tradition that we have - we eat Asian fare for this feasting; with all of us siblings, aunts, cousins bringing dishes along for the pot luck.
Inspite of being an Asian family where it's what isn't said rather than what is overtly spoken that's important, I would say that we're a fairly normal family; which is that as a family, we are typically dysfunctional and functional at the same time.

So......As with everything familial, the cook-off has turned into something of an artform with a balancing act between competition, where everyone wants to amaze the family with their cooking skill (I blame MasterChef!); and some degree of collusion between the sibllings and cousins so that we end up with a fairly balanced offering for dinner.

I think we did fairly well this year. I think most of us have switched off the competitive cook-off and we brought tried and tested favourite dishes to the table!

Egg Curry - courtesy of my mother.

Sambal, with deep fried anchovies - another one of my mother's offerings.

My mother also made this mushroom vegetarian dish. We were blessed with 4 vegetarians for dinner on this night.

Chicken Rendang - my dad's.

A dry Chicken curry - my dad has specialised in chicken curry dishes.

One of my cousin's brought this chicken soya dish - for the kids. It was delicious and all the adults descended on this!

Another cousin and an aunt brought this Assam Shrimp curry. Fantastically hot and sour!

My other cousin brought the Top Hats. You make the "hats" using a special mould and deep frying them. And then "top" it off with the filling. She made the filling vegetarian friendly.

My younger brother made paella. Why? Because he thought Spanish cuisine would fit in well with the night. Yup. That's my younger brother.

My older brother made the Thai Shrimp.

My SiL made another soya chicken dish.

My contributions? With a pesky vegetarian in the house, I tend to volunteer the vegetarian curries.

Chickpea curry.

Vegetable curry.

My mother also put on a LARGE pot of rice to go with all the curries. It was a fantastic meal!

My first plate of food.

I didn't get round to capturing my second.

Dinner is not completed without dessert.

My younger brother brought the trifle. Not necessarily children friendly because of the amount of whiskey added to the jelly.

My SiL brought the fruit platter.

One of the cousin's made panna cotta.

Others brought a raspberry chocolate fudge cake.

Another even made an Asian dessert.

My contributions this year were made with coffee drinking in mind. I also would like to thank a few of my 2D friends for providing me with links to some of these recipes. They were so fun to make!

Christmas sleigh - assembly only; no cooking required!

Reindeer cups - filled with chocolate ganache.

Rumballs! Not children friendly because of the rum content.

With all this food, we all rolled out of the house, completely stuffed and with the thought of Christmas lunch still to come!

You said there are links to the sleigh and reindeer? No fair not posting the links.

Seriously, everything looks delicious. And it looks like your gathering was controversy-free as well.

OOPS! Squirrel!!

I went looking....couldn't find the sleigh! But as I took pictures as I was constructing them, I went and posted that up on the What's For Dinner thread.

Link to that post is here.

And the reindeer things? The recipe is here. I couldn't find butternut snap biscuits so I substituted with brandy snap cups. They were much larger than the biscuits would have been so one of these cups got shared between 3 - 4 adults!

(Sorry! )

I can't even imagine the mayhem with 22 adults and 12 kids! The most we have nowadays is the four of us. If my sister ever could come down with her husband and kids, they would more than double our numbers. We have less than 10 in our whole family. 12 if you include my father's sister, husband and kid.

If we went back east there would be six more (my mother's brother and his kids/spouses/grandkid).

I grew up with large extended family gatherings for Christmas and really miss them these days. Your feast looks amazing and it's nice to see we're not the only ones rolling out the door after dinner. We were a fairly small group this year with 12 adults and 5 kids.

I love the encore of the X-mas lights!
