What to expect crowd wise

We are headed to Disneyland for the first time! We have been to WDW many times. We will plan to be at the parks as soon as they open and use fastpass. We are going to Disneyland February 1, California adventure the 2, and Disneyland again on the 3. I am wondering what to expect crowd wise. Is it like WDW where the MK is pretty crowded by the afternoon every day regardless of the time of year? Can we expect smaller crowds? Any input would be appreciated.

Also, how do the extra magic hours work? We are staying at the Grand Californian, so I think we get extra magic, right?

The touring idea of rope drop for best lines and then rest or shows and fast loading rides after lunch applies.

EMH for DL is T,Th,Sa
For CA is M,W,F,Su

One hour early. No night time extra hours. Must show room key for EMH.

Have a great time!

If you are going to DL on Friday and DCA on Saturday and then DL on Sunday you will miss the EMH all three days.

Get Park Hoppers
Start in the park with EMH and utilize it
After you are done touring, hop to the other park
DLR is pretty crowded over the weekends, but since it is Super Bowl weekend, may not be as bad as others.

Yes, flip those days and most certainly use EMH if you are staying on site. EMH is not like WDW, there are much fewer on site guests and you can get a lot done in that time. You can easily hop between parks if you want to switch after EMH or spend more time in DL. That extra hour will make all the difference in doing CarsLand, that should be your DCA priority. You may want to review HydroGuy's DL Tips for WDW Vets in the stickies for all kinds of other tips.

In terms of crowds, I'll be there Feb 2-8. Saturdays are generally busy at DLR since its more of a locals park. That Sunday is Superbowl Sunday so although there's a theory it will be a low crowd day, there is speculation it will be crowded this year. That Monday is predicted to be low, a 1/10 on TouringPlans IIRC.

Follow the usual plan of taking advantage of EMH, riding the longer line rides first, hopping if it gets too crowded, etc and you should be fine.

It is always busy Friday night no matter what time of year, but I've literally seen Tomorrowland deserted an hour after rope drop on a Friday but packed by the evening. Afternoon and evenings usually get larger crowds because the locals show up.
