I wish they had announced this at the beginning of the summer but they didn't and I've always wanted to do a tri. Is it possible in a month?
Pam, I don't see a problem since you have the 2 hard events, swim/run, in the bag. The bike is easy as long as you let the bike do the work for you. This means you use the gears to make the pedaling easy with little effort rather than hard pushing. Way too many people think that hard pushing on the pedals is the way to go fast but in reality, it slows you down and hurts your knees.

Sign up and have fun!

I love bicycling, 70 miles last Saturday, 50 miles Monday and 60 miles tomorrow, so if you have questions just ask.

p.s.-always wear a helmet

Jim - Is the acupuncture helping? I used it during our infertility treatments in the past and loved it!
Great job with your running and biking!
Pam - It sounds doable. I'm not a great swimmer so that would definitely be my downfall. Go for it!!!
John - Great advice!

I did 9.39 miles this past weekend. We had much cooler weather (started at 63F and finished at 70F). My only issue was just feeling wiped out all day. Which would be fine if I didn't have 3 little kids at home (going to the Bronx Zoo the minute I cleaned myself up after the run was probably a BAD idea!). I did some half mile repeats yesterday but it was 91F so who cares what my times were.
Jeff Galloway wants me to lower my run/walk ratio because my training runs are too fast and he's worried that I'll get injured. It's frustrating for me but I swore when I paid my $$$ for ecoaching that I'd do whatever he tells me! I haven't missed a single run since I started his ecoaching program and I feel like my training is going well so I'm going to be a believer.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Amanda

Jeremy-I'm betting you will PR and then kick yourself in the butt because you'll be thinking, I could have gone even faster.

Jim-the new bike is only a frivolity until you ride it for the first time and then you'll be thinking, man, I should have gotten this thing a long time ago.

Amanda-amazing being able to stick to the schedule and still keeping up with the 3 kiddos. Simply remarkable.

48 miles on the bike yesterday. It;s hot, & I am having some fueling/hydration issues. I think I'm going to try a long ride or 2 wearing a camelbak to see if that makes a difference.

Acupuncture is working ok.................I think. Seems to be a lessening of pain, and the acupuncturist wants to give it a 10 space until my next treatment to see how I fare. Time will tell.

Keep up the great work guys!!!

Hi all-

Pam - Good luck training for your Tri. I don't bike often but I agree with John. If you've god a decent bike, you should be able to make it through the biking portion of a sprint tri without much trouble. A friend of mine started seriously riding in May and last Saturday completed RAIN (Ride Across INdiana). He switched from running to riding because of shin splints among other things.

Amanda - Nice job on the long run. I'm not sure what ratio Galloway wants you to go at but you might see if some multiple of it might be OK. For example, going the other direction, instead of doing 2:00/1:00, I'll often do 1:20/:40. That being said I've never liked walk breaks any shorter than about that 40 seconds, but I havent tried short intervals in quite a while.

John - Thanks for the vote of encouragement. October is a long ways away and I know I have a pent up PR in the half marathon. If the weather cooperates, a PR and knowing I could have gone faster is definately possible. Right now, my plan is to take the first part of the race fairly conservately.

Jim - Nice job on the bike ride. Not sure what to tell you on the hydration front.

Yesterday, I got out for my 10 mile long run. This is the earliest I've gotten to a 10 mile long run before a half marathon.

First day on the bike yesterday went well- I'm not great at changing gears yet but I'll keep practicing. Turns out DH's bike is 21 speed and not a 15 which is what he told me (doy) anyway I rode for about 45 minutes and only have a slightly sore bottom LOL.

Tomorrow I need to hit the pool before class (I hope the Olympics aren't too interesting tonight so I go to sleep before midnight so I can get to the Y to swim before my 8:30 class)

Two days of running in the insane heat & humidity. I am HOPING that my lousy performance is due to the weather. 5 1/2 yesterday & 6 1/2 today. Slowly. I don't think I have EVER sweated this hard. Seriously. I am taking 32 oz of Gatorade with me, and it's lasting about 50 minutes, at which point I just pack it in. I'm not gonna' get snot-knockin dehydrated in this slop.

But IIRC, it's pretty cool in California in Septmenber. :-)

The tri has been cancelled by the Y so now I'll have to look around for one. (Not until next spring though as I'll be away from home and my regular workout schedule starting next Thursday.) I'm going to start more swimming though and keep riding some just in case.

Pam - Great job with the tri training! Sorry your event go cancelled but now you have more time to prepare. Part of me wants to do a tri and part of me is overwhelmed by the idea.
Jim - Sorry your back isn't better. Great job running in the heat!
Jeremy - Great job with 10 miles! That's what I have waiting for me this weekend.

I did my 2nd Magic Mile on Sunday and improved to 9:22! I was really happy. My splits were lousy (I went out to fast) but I was thrilled with the improvement in just 2 weeks. 10 mile run this weekend.

I was at a work dinner last night and I was talking to someone I know (she's a pediatrician so not someone I see often but someone I've known for a long time). We were talking about running. I was saying that I'm training for my 2nd marathon but I'm slow. She asked me my marathon finish time and then responded, "Oh. You ARE slow." Gee, thanks. I'm been really, really working on not worrying about my pace (I tend to run my long runs too fast which will get me injured) and I feel like I'm getting faster. Still, it was a big blow to my fragile psyche. I know a lot of people my age who are much faster than I am but I do the best I can. Anyway it made me feel bad...

Amanda-keep the MM coming down. As far as the comment, not a nice thing to say at all but don't take it to heart even though it hurts to hear someone say something like that. I know I will always be slower than many others and accept it when I'm told I'm slow. Just gives me a little more incentive to see if I can improve. Don't allow others to mess with your psyche. I have enough fun messing with my own psyche so as to leave very little room for others to get in.

Pam-sorry the Tri was cancelled but you can always hold your own race. I do that and for me it's fun even though there is no BLING after I'm finished. Work on the bike because you can make up lots of time on it.

JimB-I plan things around water fountains when knowing I'm going long and I can't carry enough water. CA WILL be cooler!

Jeremy-it's a great feeling when you know you're ahead of previous distances for an upcoming event.

AFUs-we were RVing at Myakka River State Park this past weekend and got out early Sunday for 5+ miles of enjoyable walking. Kathy took lots of pictures with her new camera including a 6+ foot long gator that was resting at the side of the road where we walked by. It had a piece of its tail missing so it might even have been a 7 footer. I got out Saturday planning on a 10K and wound up with 14 miles. Missed the end of the Olympic bicycle road race but had a good workout.

Yesterday I did a 101 mile bicycle ride in memory of a biking buddy who was killed last Thursday in Ga. He and 2 of his friends had around 700 miles to go to complete their Prudhoe Bay to Key West bicycle journey.

Keep the training fun and stay safe.

Pam - Sorry to hear your Tri was canceled.

Jim - Nice job getting out in this heat. So you're saying the weather last year after the Disneyland half was unusual. It was warm race day and down right hot that next week. I think it hit over 100 a couple of days.

Amanda - Nice job on the Magic Mile. I haven't done one in several months. I think my last sucessful one was in November. But I know pacing can be a problem. Hope your 10 miler this weekend goes well.

Jim - Nice job on your ride, and sorry to hear about your biking buddy.

I was looking back at my training and last year, I hit 11 mile the middle of July for Disneyland Sept. 3rd. This year I hit 10 the end of July for Columbus Oct. 20th. Monday, I did a bit of a tempo run. I ended up doing 5K at a 12:45 pace given the warm weather that's pretty good. That's right in the range of where I want to run in the half marathon. I preceeded that by a mile of straight running.

Hey kids!

34 hot, sloppy, windy miles today. Wanted more, but I was really tired after work yesterday.

Not much else going on. Hope all are doing well

Thank you all for the love and support! What an awesome group!

I skipped hill repeats yesterday due to 89F temperatures and what looked like impending thunderstorms. Instead I did 3.1 miles on the treadmill. A fairly uninspired run but I feel like I've been pushing myself a lot and it's been a tough week at work (3 OR days in a row so lots and lots of standing on my feet and lots of early mornings!). Looking forward to 10 miles this weekend at a nice, slow, comfortable pace.

Happy Friday!
Amanda
