Fish Oil for ADD

Hello Everyone,

I was hoping for some advice. My DD(4) developmental pediatrician suggesting trying some Omega 3 for boarderline ADD. Has anyone ever tried this and has it helped them? Also, can you tell me what brand worked. My DD is a very poor eater and I'm trying to get the one that taste the best in hopes that she will take it.

Thank you.

Theres one I've seen commercials for. It's small and red and I will be darned if I can remember what they're called. I know they say they're not supposed to be as fishy though. This is totally unhelpful.

I'm interested in this, too, for my child and myself. Our problem is that we very strongly dislike fish. . One fishy burp and we would be done, truly. I want to know if there's a good way to get this nutrient, with its possible ADD benefit and many other health benefits, without the fishy taste.

Hello!

My daughter has been on Omega 3's for ADD for 2 years and has no signs of the ADD at all

I refused to put her on medication, and did a totally natural treatment.

We use the Lit' Criters Omega 3's (she is on 4 daily), Stay Focus - 2 a day (natural supplement) and a high protein diet. When we started all of this, 2 years ago, her teachers asked me what meds, I had put her on, since you could see results within a week. At her "lowest point" she was on 10 Omega's a day, but has she has grown we have been able to take her down.

We also did and still do, cranial massage (we started out every 3 weeks, we are now at once a year).

This is a child that failed K through 2nd grade. She is now in 4th and getting all A's and B's.

Please if you have any questions, let me know. I would be happy to answer!!!

Susan, thank you so much. This really helps and gives me hope that this might work. Are the lit' critters gummies or a liquid? I also would perfer to go the natural route if possible especially at my daughters age (4).

That is great news about your dd! It is so nice to hear that she is doing so well.

Thank you again for the information.

Adult ADDer here. Fish oil has worked for me. Also a low carb high protein diet with limited sweets, no white sugar, white bread, white rice. (While I was still working, I did take ritalin and it did work for me with no ill side effects, so don't totally discount it, if your child needs it, even with the healthy diet.)

MegaRed is the one I meant! I finally saw the commercial again. Apparently its krill oil and it claims no fishy taste. I can't speak personally to it though.

The lil' critters are gummies and Olivia loves them. No fishy taste, just a typical gummy. In fact, we use many of their products. They are all natural, no coloring dyes or anything like that.

We too have cut out any artificial foods. 95% of our meals are made from scratch and we have eliminated high fructose corn syrup, sugars and dyes. Only 100% whole wheat bread, natural peanut butter, maple syrup (when needed). Olivia is also limited on the about of fruit that she eats, because of the high sugar content. No fruit at breakfast, only lunch and snacks. Even cheese slices are natural. We don't do "organic" per se, but whole foods rule

As I think of more I will let you know. I think taking this approach will not only help your daughters symptoms, but make her feel over all much better.

Good Luck

Two things to keep in mind ( as a nurse, I have to add a warning).
1) Natural does not mean no side effects, so do still watch for problems.

2) Natural medications are not classed or tested the same as medications, they are pretty much considered the same as food. No one is testing them for safety or effectiveness. So, it's better to get advice in this case from other people who are using the product.

Im going to move this to the disABILITIES Community Board where it will be more on topic.

We had DS on the Little Critters (they are gummies) and they tasted and smelled fishy! Maybe we just got a bad batch. I have heard several people talk about a liquid that is flavored and their kids will take. I tried the Feingold Diet with ds and did not see much improvement. He was really good about it too in Kindergarten he told the teacher he could not have the blue and red ice pop at a party because of his diet. But I know people who have been succesful with it. I still try to buy as much stuff as possible with out the artifical colorings, flavorings or preservatives. I think it is just better over all for all of us. Tried all of this plus biofeedback before putting DS on medication.

Nordic naturals is good liquid. Mix it with juice, you cannot taste it.

I take Omega 3 tablets and I have found out that if I take the tablets right before I eat I won't get that fishy tast or smell.

Try Expecta (DHA Supplement)

My son's pediatric specialist has us give our son Expecta since it is a synthetic Omega 3 supplement. It does not have a fishy smell and there is no possibility of mercury in it since it is synthetic. It is targeted to pregnant women so look for it near the pregnancy vitiamins.

3 years of them here!

We use Iron Kids Omega 3 Bursts with DS. He's been on them since age 3 (he's now 6). Huge difference in impulse control when he's taking them!

DS has Aspergers and ADD and we use Pharmax Finest Pure Fish Oil with Essential Oil of Orange. It was recommended by our pediatric nutritionalist. We give it to him via a medicine dropper/Syringe and he takes it with no complaints at all. I have noticed a difference in him since we started.
