I normally spend some time outside admiring the display gardens. But this year, my boys came with me (DH and DS) and by this time, they were itching to go. I did manage some shots.

I raced round to some of my favourite traders to get shots of flowers.

In between, I found touches of whimsy.

My time had run out by this stage. Next year, I’m coming without my boys!
Thanks for reading.

I'm happy to dance with you
I have 2 opinions
We had tried usual things to keep them away, including something like coyote urine, it is sold in hardware stores by us

2014 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

2014 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

It's another year come and gone and time to update this thread for the annual Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show!

This year's event was held in the last week of March and the weather was just brilliant. We received about 20 - 30 mm of rain on the Tuesday and the show opened on the Wednesday for the Trade and Thursday to the general public.

After last year's crowd on the weekend, I decided to hit the show on the Thursday by myself; as well as the Sunday, with family and friends from Brisbane. So there are a fair few more pictures this year than in previous year's.

The Venue

As always, the show was set up at the Royal Exhibition Building and Gardens.

It RAINED on the Thursday morning; and as a consequence, the building became a safe haven for everyone that morning. And wouldn't you know it? It was rather crowded in there on the Thursday!! So much for a relatively crowd-free Thursday morning.

Still, it wasn't that bad.

I took the opportunity to see if I could improve on the previous attempts of the dome.

I think I'm pretty pleased with this year's attempts.

Oh.....in case you're wondering........this is what the Great Hall looked like on the Sunday morning. It was definitely busier on the Thursday morning when it rained!

Flower Dress Fashion

(Continued from Previous Post)

Flower Dress Fashion

Every year, they hold a wearable floral fashion competition. This year was no different.

Popcorn, anyone?

Perhaps Eve may have worn something like this in the Garden of Eden.

I just thought it was under done myself.

DeVine has nothing to worry about!

Some of the displays were just a little bit too twiggy for me.

Other's just seemed a little on the whacky side. Can you imagine being a bunny dressed up with all those greens and NOT nibbling on any of it?

In amongst all the hustle and bustle, I was pleased to see Australian Flora featured this year.

You have to admit......some of these creations were just wonderful!

The details in some were to die for!

This one sure put a whole different spin on wearing a sack cloth!

Big Business Floristry

(Continued from Previous Post)

Big Business Floristry

Floristry is big business around the world!

It's no wonder that the centre section of the hall was taken up with marquee billing florists; all out to top each other in their bigger is better displays.

Interflora always takes the centre of the hall. I quite liked this year's display of yellow.

Life really is a bed of roses!

.....and all sorts of other flowers.

Some of the displays that caught my eye.....

I really liked the seaside theme of this exhibit.

Orchids are always a favourite at the show.

This one was my favourite. It was simple; but effective.

I thought this one definitely took the cake for OTT. As much as I like having flowers on my table, I also like to have space for food; and also to be able to see my dining partners.

I was surprised to see such blatant advertising for something that was not flower related. The King and I will be one of the must-see musicals in Melbourne this year.

Anna's dress was exquisite!

This one won the Gold Medal award.

The florist didn't just work up one side of the 'vase'.....this was the other side.

Some of the details on display by the florists that I will take as inspiration for my home.....

Table Floral Displays

(Continued from Previous Post)

Table Floral Displays

One of my favourite sections to go-seek at the MIFGS is the table display competition that intermediate level students have the opportunity to design for.

There was much to admire in this year's offering.

Simple but cohesive works well for me!

I also loved the more whimsical and romantic displays.

There were also a few on display that I personally thought to be train-wrecks. Just a little messy and impractical for my tastes.

Although, I liked this idea for a place mat.

Anything that includes natural elements always attracts my attention.

The Advanced florist students also have their own competition.

These are a bit too structured for me; but it is still nice to go see and admire.

This was probably my favourite in this section.

Although this one came close to being my favourite as well!

Sadly, I really don't see myself being inspired by very much in this section this year.

Flower Alley

(Continued from Previous Post)

Flower Grower's Alley

Every year, down the Flower Grower's Alley section of the building, we get to see the latest blooms and the colours that are in fashion. I think pink is back in fashion this year. Then again, has it ever been out of fashion?

I'll just let the flowers speak for themselves.

The lotus flower is so stunning in any display.

With Easter around the corner, it was only natural that we would find touches of it here and there.

One of the trends in the displays this year was texture.

Texture, texture....everywhere!

Texture and different vase holders were a feature down Flower Grower's Alley this year.

Did I mention that there was a distinct increase of Australian flora in this year's show?

About time too!

I loved this idea!

For Sale

Time to head outside!

There is a Disney link! Every year, they do put on a Children's garden exhibit. This year it was Fairies and pirate's theme.

For a gold coin donation (that's Aussie slang for $1 or $2), kids could get face painted and/or colour in a picture.

DS has long outgrown this section. I always come in because I don't think I've outgrown this section.

So we headed towards things that were For Sale.

Pure advertising!

Pure sales!

There is a vast array of garden things for sale. You could drop a fortune of money here if you really wanted to. My excuse for not spending is that I then have to work out how to get things home.....and I totally ignore the Free delivery signs. Instead, I come home with cards, collateral and lots of reading material.....I always justify the non-spend by saying that I can look at things at home and then order it when I'm ready.

Still, I always like looking for the growing ideas in the garden section of the show.

There is always lots of garden sculpture for sale. Way too expensive for me!

This was a couple of hundred dollars.

This was in the region of $600 - $700.

5-figures! Go figure.

Not. at. any. price.

Pink is IN....and more flowers

Pink was definitely the in-colour this year! Mostly every stand outside selling flowers had pink for sale.

My barometer for how popular the colour is......I usually gauge the temperature by the number of bromeliads for sale that have the "in-colour". And pink was totally confirmed!
