I was still trying to make my schedule work out and then it sold out. :-( OTOH, this opened up a travel opportunity in August for the USAT Olympic Distance Triathlon Age Group Nationals in Milwaukee next August. For me, that race may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Disneyland should still be there next year for me (and if it's not, then we have other problems!).

I hope you have a great time and I'm sure you'll see a few cousins and more than a few WISHer's there.

I'd take going to the age group championships over Disney any day. You can always go to Disneyland in 2015 and get the 10th anniversary medal to go with your 10th anniversary Goofy medal.

In other news, part one of my Goofy race report is finally online. Part two is still under construction. http://jmsenger.blogspot.com

I may never qualify for a race like this again, so I will try to make the most of it.
I like the way you think about the anniversary medals!

I thought I'd pop in here, tell all the cousins hello, check and ask for updates.

And ask a general question: Is there interest here in trying to resurrect 'Ohana on the DIS?

Richard, I'd definitely go for the USAT Olympic Distance Triathlon Age Group if I could.

Not much going on in my neck of the woods. Some maintenance miles, cat care-taking, too much work and not enough play. I've gained some weight post-WDW and looking to recommit to things before things get out of hand....

I'll give my update. I've got four weeks to go before running the Two Oceans ultra in Cape Town. Training is going well, though I'm a bit scared of the two mountains. We don't exactly have those here.

As for 'Ohana, I'm happy to do my part to keep it going. No, we're not as active as most of the other sub-groups, but we're not dead yet.

Here's a shocking update--I am nursing yet another injury.

Actually I think we finally got closer to the root of most of my problems--piriformis syndrome. Now the pt is trying to figure out why my right piriformis is always inflamed and my back hurts so much. She did active release today on my hip flexor, so fingers crossed. As always I am cautiously optimistic. Jen saw me after the full--my back was so locked up I could not sit down and had to go have a massage before I could sit. I am still attempting to go at least a mile a day every day in 2013, and it is keeping me sane, I think.

My DS is graduating from college--and staying for grad school before going onto law school. Yes, he is a professional student. We have not paid tuition (yet) so we are not complaining.

And I am hoping to complete the KDF half at the end of April again. Mike is going to run with me this year and I am still kind of sort of hoping for a pr....

Richard--that is so cool about the age group nationals! I am assuming this means the injuries are feeling good and you are getting back to normal.

John--I am sure you will have a great race! Do you take pictures?

Debra--I have had to work hard to get my weight back under control after the marathon. I did some major pity party eating for a couple of weeks. The craptastic weather is not helping. Mike keeps saying--where is the global warming? How is the kitty?

Congrats to our Princesses--Jen and Mel, I know of for sure. Was anyone else there?

fwiw, I like reading everyone's updates here.

Not dead...just on life support. *cough cough*

And yes, congrats to JenB and Mel!

John: Just looked up the Two Oceans ultra. That's a good distance for an ultra in bumping up from a marathon. It looks scenic, too, if I could get the mountains out of my head. I'm sure they won't get into yours too much, though.

Rose: I'd never heard of piriformis syndrome - it sounds very uncomfortable to say the least (although the 8yo in me wants to make an inappropriate joke about numbness of the posterior. ) Congrats to DS on grad school plans...and law school. Is he going to the same school for his MA?

AFM: Our cat is doing surprisingly well. A couple of days after we came home, her tumor burst and she became lethargic. The vet thought we should keep her comfortable and start preparing for the end. I'll just skip the messy parts and get to the good news - she's not healing, but she seems to keep her stabilized. Her appetite is good, she's got some energy, and has just past her 6 mo. mark. So she'll be with us a while longer than predicted.

Her condition does make travel a bit difficult for us, though, as I'm not comfortable leaving her our pet sitter. (It wouldn't be fair to either of them.) No spring break travel for us, and I've been trying to motivate myself to run outdoors. Eh. I'm hoping for a local St. Patrick's Day race - because what's better than running followed by beer or whiskey.

I think you meant to write "followed by beer and whiskey."

Glad your cat is still doing well. How nice to have her around much longer than expected.

And Rose, I'm sorry about your piriformis. Mine get pretty tight too, but sounds like you've got it much worse. Have you tried adding yoga in addition to your regular massages? I find that helps keep things stretched and strong.

Thanks! I did yoga all last fall--which is the only reason I think I was able to finish the marathon. She thinks I have an instability/weakness that is causing my piriformis to work overtime and I guess spasm. And when it is really bad my back is miserable. After the marathon I had another huge flareup and couldn't sit for more than 10 or 15 min and none of my "tricks" were working, so I decided to go to the doctor to make sure nothing was going on. She sent me back to physical therapy. I ran 6 miles over the weekend with only minor soreness, so hopefully I am on the mend. It is kind of nice cause I am learning how to do the strength exercises the right way, so it's like having a personal trainer. Trying to be positive.

Debra--glad the kitty is hanging in there.

Like John said, we're not as active as some, but we're still around. I think that's worth something!

Debra - Glad Caliban is hanging on. I completely understand why travel would be out of the question now. And I'm on board with the group who needs to drop some extra pounds. Maybe we need to resurrect another thread...

Rose - I feel your pain. Had a mild case of that with my first bout of IT band issues. I think I see my massage therapist often enough now to keep it under control, but I can totally understand how it could incapacitate you. Glad you've found someone who can help!

Richard - Age Group Nationals! Wow. You just get more and more amazing. And all of this after being hit by a car...

John - An ultra with mountains. Gee. Couldn't just tackle any old ultra... As for the 10th anniversary Goofy, I'm afraid Disney is going to have registration issues to rival Chicago this year. It seems as if EVERYONE is planning to do this one. It will probably sell out in less than an hour, unless they wise up and go for the big money and allow large numbers.

AFM - After a dismal winter running season, I decided to forgo my Paris marathon registration. I just haven't been able to get the miles in. I did the 26.2 with Donna half marathon as a virtual race - we were able to run the 13.1 here locally and still get our shirts and medals, but that 13.1 just about killed me since I hadn't run longer than 8 since December. I'm having lots of IT band problems, so I finally decided that rather than risk being miserable for the entire week we're in Paris, I'd just not run the marathon. As it turns out, we have a friend who's going to be in Europe at the same time, and he's thrilled to take my bib! So we leave in a month for my first trip to Paris, and I'm excited!

DD graduates from college in May (we have one too, Rose, but she's calling it done after that!) For her graduation, we're taking her to Indianapolis to see the Indy 500 at the end of the month. In between Paris and graduation, she and I are going to do the Run Like a Diva half in Myrtle Beach. So it's gonna be a busy spring.

Jackie

Hello, friends!

My first half was Princess 2012 (short but unexciting story, be quiet Jen! ) so I made a point to run this year's as a first anniversary - it ended up being my fifth half marathon. I'd like to say that I plan to dial down the craziness this coming year, but I doubt that's likely. We have PAPs this year, so at least a couple more trips are planned, including Wine and Dine, which I'm looking forward to checking out. Dumbo's on tap as well. Taking a self-promised two week break from running (the weather sucks anyway) just to let all the Goofy blisters heal a bit.

Oh, and I met Debra at Goofy!

Be well everyone, and take care!

John: You obviously have a strong constitution if you're up for running, beer AND whiskey. In an entirely related note - to whiskey and not running - we keep trying to get into a distillery tour of our local brand (Wigle) to try it before we invest in it. But wouldn't you know, our hometown tours have been consistently sold out on the weekends we're in town or have time. I'm hoping to have something to report on that front by the end of March. Just because I know you and Corinna care.

Rose: That's a runner's credo for you - physical therapy = personal trainer. After all, isn't that why they can both be abbreviated as PT? I hope it works and that you are, indeed, on the mend. I have to say, I've quickly fallen off the bandwagon of doing a mile a day, at least for running. I generally walk a few miles a day as part of the lifestyle. But that's by bakeries and candy stores and coffee shops...

Jackie: Yes, I need accountability. I just enjoy food and drink way too much. Slurp, slurp. I'm sorry you won't be able to do the Paris Marathon; I know you must be disappointed. But you're right to want to enjoy your whole trip, knowing you have the Run Like a Diva as part of your season. I envy you the globe-trotting, btw.

Oh, and I can't believe DD is graduating already?!

George: And the most important part of your post was...

Just kidding. It was a joy to meet you, of course, and I love that you've jumped into everything with both (blistered) feet. PAPs? I predict with the Dumbo you'll just go ahead and upgrade to the Premier Passport. Just guessing. I might be just steps behind you on that one, although we're not doing the Dumbo but likely the D23 Expo - depending on Caliban.

Is it all runDisney races for you this year?

AFM: It was a nice day today, sunny and clear. A good running day. I was thankful since it's supposed to storm tonight. I also have to say (shhh, don't tell anyone) that it's nice not to have a goal for a bit. Other than catching up on my podcasts, exploring some new neighborhoods and soaking up the sunshine, that is.

Also, if anyone is interested in running a virtual 5K/10K on April 30, you might want to consider Without Music Life Would Be Bb (B flat). It's organized by Suzanne, one of our WISHers, to raise monies for East Ridge HS choir department.

DOOD and I are in...it's not a physical race, but at least I have something on the calendar now.

Likewise, Debra. Glad to have been part of your marathon weekend as well, it was a blast!

The Premier Passport is tempting.. if I had the funds and time to do D23 also, I think it would have ended up being a no brainer. For now, I think the park hoppers will work for us.

So far, my future races are all runDisney - W&D and Dumbo. And both Jen B's fault. It's a little weird not having one in the coming months - it may be hard to stick to a running schedule until I find something to go to in between.. now on to figuring out what!

I like that you blame JenB for your running. Oh, the shame, the shame! I blame her for not being able to get "Sweet Caroline" out of my head today.

How is your break from running going?

AFM: Oh my goodness - it's been in the 50s here and beautiful. It's like a little gift: I'm not going to Disney on spring break, but this weather is perfect running weather. That said, I'm not running a lot - did 7 miles on Saturday. But it's getting to be time to bump that up a little. The trails should be less messy soon! I can go out on some of the more well-traveled paths now.

In other news, Hakuna Matana's bunnyfoo posted this review of the Nike+ running app. I don't use it, because it turns out I don't like running with a phone, but it might be useful for some people.

Which leads me to my next question. Who here runs with a phone, and when? Other than safety, reasons why I should reconsider doing so?

I only run with my phone if I think that I may have some physical reason that I won't be able to finish the route that I've planned that day. I've found that I shouldn't run with it on a regular basis, since it's too easy for it to be a mental crutch if I'm not feeling up to the run. If there's an out, I could take it. If I don't have the phone, I can't bail! Unfortunately, as a group leader for Galloway, we're required to carry our phones on group runs. I have to get over the "crutch" concept once the season begins and pretend it's not there! And I also don't like worrying about sweat, rain, and other elements damaging the phone. So my overall vote on the phone is a no, except for safety.

It was in the upper 60's here yesterday and today. You couldn't get near half the parks in the area yesterday. People were desperate to get outside and away from the cold rainy weather we've had all winter. We took the dogs for a 3 mile hike in the woods.

George - If you want different, check out The Scream. Pretty cool half marathon!
