Florida Gator football lovers: A perspective on your program

There have been a few threads on here where the Gator fans get really defensive about Urban Meyer and their program. I thought this was an interesting article from yahoo sports.

I am a gator fan and I agree that half a game suspension is a bit of a joke. It should be a full game at least or more.

I respect Urban Meyer but he made the wrong decision this time.

What stuck out to me in that article:

Quote:
“I don’t think that we did anything in that game that they didn’t do,” quarterback Tim Tebow told reporters.
Really? THAT'S the justification for it? The poor running back is at the bottom of the pack, defenseless, and someone tries gouging his eyes out - and then the justification is that they were playing dirty too? Please. Grow up.

ETA: I think they linked to it in the article, but just so people don't have to search for it, here's the video. The gouging starts at about 6 seconds in. http://www.youtube.com/user/s144700#p/a/0/cISxU8Crulw

No the heck kidding. What a stand up Christian guy, eh? A real Crusader for Christ.

Listen, no one knows another person's heart, and I know he has done some great Mission work. But, sometimes Christian men and women have to stand up to those closest to them in real, everyday situations. It's not always about being flashy about being a Christian; but a real leader, Christian or otherwise, would have used this opportunity to say that, "No this is not okay. This is not how we play ball around here. I am disappointed in his actions."

But Tebow's reaction? Not much for turning the other cheek.

Look up Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy's "I am Second" videos on Youtube. Now, those are real men of the Lord.

At a Florida game? Never. But I've been front row at Iowa games several times. I understand playing a little dirty, and I've seen it. But eye gouging? Really? Not only that, but getting caught and then only getting a half a game suspension - THAT's the part that's ridiculous.

what should his punishment be? Did you see what was done to him first?

holy heck, unless you have experienced it close up, this crap goes on ALL the time, punches in the ribs after the whistle, kicks, knee jabs, you name and like siblings fighting, it is usually the one defending themselves that are caught. Was what Spikes did acceptable, hell no, he is hurt anyway and should sit against Vandy, I just hate people speaking of crap like this....so stupid, "christian" or not, most all players do this. be a water girl or a line holder on the field and you will see much much more that is not caught on tape. and for the s talking about Tebow, well that is pretty darn crappy.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Top-ranked Florida will be without star linebacker Brandon Spikes for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.

Coach Urban Meyer suspended Spikes on Monday, two days after the defensive captain apparently attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in a 41-17 victory.

"I don't condone that," Meyer said. "I understand what goes on on the football [field], but there's no place for that. We're going to suspend Brandon for the first half of the Vanderbilt game. I spoke with him. That's not who he is. That's not who we are. He got caught up in emotion."

Spikes issued a statement apologizing for what he did.

Mike Golic rips into Florida Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes, who appeared to attempt to gouge the eyes of a Georgia player during the game on Saturday. Golic calls it a "classless unsportsmanlike move."

"I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions," he said. "I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions."

Meyer's wife mentioned Spikes' actions to him Sunday night, then defensive coordinator Charlie Strong did the same Monday morning. Meyer's said his first reaction was to move on. Then he saw a replay of the incident, which shows Spikes shoving his glove-covered right hand into Ealey's facemask and moving it back and forth.

Meyer then spoke to Spikes and determined he was retaliating after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game. Meyer also talked to Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive, but Florida officials said it was Meyer's decision to suspend Spikes.

"We understand the game of football," Meyer said. "Some of us have played it. Very emotional things happened in that game in particular that were not good for either side, but the bottom line is we're Florida and he's Brandon Spikes and we expect certain things. He understands."

The SEC issued a statement saying it reviewed and accepted the discipline handed down by Florida.

The Florida-Georgia game was filled with chippy behavior, with pushing, shoving, five personal-foul penalties -- three against Georgia and two against Florida -- and plenty of smack-talking.

Officials even gathered Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Georgia linebacker Marcus Dowtin together in the second quarter and warned them things were getting out of hand.

"I don't think that we did anything in that game that they didn't do," Tebow said Monday. "If you go back and look at it and study it, you can see it in the film, too. It was an intense game, both teams were very passionate about it."
Spikes is fourth on the team with 42 tackles and has three sacks.

He considered entering the NFL draft in January, but decided to return for his senior season in hopes of helping Florida win a third national title in four years.

But he's battled injuries all season. He missed time early in the season because of an Achilles tendon injury, and sat out most of two games because of a strained groin. He played only a series against Arkansas on Oct. 17 and sat out the entire game the following week.

He returned against Georgia and finished with a team-high 10 tackles. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

"He's very intense and very emotional and very passionate," Tebow said. "I think that's what makes him part of the great player that he is because he brings that fire. People look at him and the defense wants to play for him. The offense, they want to score so it makes it easier on him.

"He brings fire and he brings juice to everybody. Without that, he would not be as great of a player as he is, and he would not be even close to the leader that he is."

Brandon was wrong for what he did, yes. UM should have susupended him for more than 1/2 of the Vandy game, yes.

Many Florida fans will agree to that.

To start a thread, hoping for a fight from us is silly. We don't like unsportsmanlike conduct from our players any more than the opposing team does.

All it does is add fuel to the fire for all the people that love to hate us so.

It's unfortunate, though, that people are like rabid dogs, waiting for Tebow to do something, say something so that they can attack his Christian character. How judgmental.

What wasn't said by Timmy and the rest of the media was that before that play, Tim had to go to the sidelines to squirt water in his eyes because a Georgia player had done the exact same thing to him. He ran to the sideline because he couldn't see. We watched it over and over again during the game, before the Brandon incident. The player was on top of him, with his hand wrapped around his helmet, grasping down inside.

Football is ugly. The FL/GA game is one of the most intense rivalries in all of college football.
It isn't ever a decent, nice, "Let's get together for tea and crumpets" type game. The players- from both sides- get passionate about it. And things are done in the heat of the moment that shouldn't be.

UM has given the punishment, Brandon has apologized, the SEC and Slive have okayed it.

Brandon Spikes will make a perfect draft pick for my Oakland Raiders. Hopefully he'll take Tebow with him.

Let me just say, that this couldn't have happened to a nicer team. Man, I hate the Gators so much, that I am considering moving out of the state of Florida, just so my kids won't be tempted to go there. And if for some reason we are still here and they want to go there, then they will have to pay for it themselves. Ok Rant over. Flame away, I can take it, and I know that MOST Florida fans wont have any negative talk about their beloved team without going off in a huff.
