help. need to relace southern comfort food menu with low cholesterol alternatives

some of you know, my dw had a stroke a few weeks back. we have since discovered that our family dr has ignored her cholesterol levels (quote: your cholesterols a little high, eat oat meal or cheerios once a day for the next six weeks) and now its at a very dangerously high level. shes been given a scrip for lipitor, and is still eating cheerios, but i need some alternative recipees to help get it down and keep it there. we already do a lot of things that are supposed to help, ie 0 fat margerine, canola oil, yogurt for snacks, but i need ideas. we are going to change meats from fried to baked/broiled/grilled, and already eat a fair amount of beans...

Here is website that will tell you everything I would,but worded alot better.One note you can still fry food with olive oil,we do it all the time with lean cut pork chops..

olive oil is not an option, nor is soy being as i am highly allergic to olives, and she and i both are allergic to soy. we already use canola oil for everything, and the extra lean cuts of meat, skinless chicken breast, so we arent sure what is running her numbers so high. we have switched to 2% milk, and low fat cheeses,

Add ground flax seed to cereal. I don't have cholesterol issues, but here is how I start my day. 1/2 cup fiber one cereal, 2 TBS ground flax seed, 1 cup blueberries. I buy the big bag of blueberries at BJ's and measure out a cup. Sometimes I do this at night and leave them in the fridge and they are defrosted in the morning.

Have your doctor send her to a nutrionist.

Fish oils capsules are also a great help.

Sometimes its a genetic thing rather than lifestyle - my Aunt has high cholesterol and eats vert healthily

Have you ever heard of Red Rice yeast? It is said to lower your cholesterol.

Don't know if you have the activa range which is supposed to lower your cholesterol - don't know if it works.

I just read an article that said in their study a group of people who's diet was rich in oatmeal + soy milk + plant sterol enhanced margarine + almonds lowered their LDL cholesterol by 30% - nearly the same as those who took medication. If you are alergic to soy, you could substitue almond milk and still have great benefits. The trick is to eat these things TOGETHER, they supposedly enhance each other to lower cholesterol. Luckily they would taste great together! Also, a great resource for down home healthy cooking recipes is the Healthy Cooking magazine from the people who make Taste of Home magazine. You could look some recipes up on their website - I love the Healthy Cooking mag - I also have it sent to my mom. Good luck!

Sorry, couldn't help myself. But seriously, I'm very sorry that your wife had a stroke. I hope she's beginning to do better now. Other than that I have nothing useful to add to this discussion. My high cholesterol is a genetic issue. For years, mine was absurdly low (the good kind of low) & the doctors were confused since everyone else's was high. No change in diet & mine just went high about the time I hit 40 or so. I now take both Zocor & fish oil capsules.

Also, watch the carbs - especially things like pasta. Those affect your triglycerides & I think Lipitor is used for that problem as well as cholesterol.
