Restaurant Report 3/12 - 3/20/09

My DD (9 yrs); DCousin & her DD (10 yrs) and I just returned from our trip to WDW. We did the DDP w/ the snack; counter & table per day. We felt we had a good value on it as most of our meals were expensive plus we could budget easier. Here is where we ate:

3/13 - Chef Mickey's for dinner. It was all right. Instead of having one big long buffet line, they have two lines w/ the same food that meets at the meat station in the center. The food was good, hot and tasteful. The service was good as well. However, nothing really special.

3/14 - California Grill for dinner. We got off the elevator just as the fireworks were ending! Bummer! What a view - as we did see the very last part of the finale. The food was good, the service was great. Cousins had filet and loved it. I don't recall what my DD or I had, but I know we liked it. Desserts were beautiful. Best part of dinner was the French futbol (soccer) team seated next to us. Everytime someone at a nearby table celebrated a birthday, they stood up & joined in singing. Then they continued the song in French. Lots of fun.

3/15 - Crystal Palace for dinner. None of us had ever ate here and we did not go for the character participation, but they were fun. The food was delicious and our server was wonderful, funny, entertaining, nice... perfect. We all got our tummy filled. Once we checked in for our PS, we did have to wait about 15 minutes as the place was mega packed and many walk ups.

3/16 - Whispering Canyon for lunch - NOT using our DDP here. What a major disappointment. My DCousin has ate here every trip and when on her 25th wedding anniversary trip, the CMs had a "shot gun wedding" for them - made them dress up, recruited other audience members to officiate & act as witnesses. We've ate here before too and enjoyed our experience. First of all, we had a 1:30 PS. WE DID NOT GET SEATED UNTIL 2:20!!! I inquired at 1:55 our seating status & was told about 10 or 15 minutes. When I went back at 2:15, I was told the same thing again. I know the ADR/PS are not reservations - but waiting this long was absurd. Jack, the manager, told me that people were lingering at their tables & they didn't have any place to seat us. I asked about the 15 open tables I counted. He said they did not have servers on hand to cover those tables & could not seat people because the servers had to "give attention to the seated tables and since we have the all you can eat specials, they have to be sure the guests are taken care of." My DCousin said my face was so red - she never saw me so mad before. We contemplated leaving, but we were already there, had good times in the past, the kids were hungry (as was I in my 6 month pregnant body)... Our server was AWFUL. She never came by to check on us (remember that Jack said they had to give attention to the seated tables... we hardly saw her and told him so); I had to get my own drink refills. The food wasn't even good. There was NO slapstick going on at all. (While we were waiting for our table, we heard one waiter lead the crowd in singing "If You're Happy and You Know It".) Jack saw our disgusted faces and offered free dessert to us. Since our lady never came over he also said we could have the Tinkerbell trinkets w/ the green glowing lights. He told our server, but we never got them. After lunch he was suprised we were sitting at the table so long - we were waiting for the lights and still a drink refill. He realized we had yucky service and comp'd our whole meal. We were greatful not to have to pay... it was the least they could do, we felt. That was the Disney service we expect. It did make up for some of the mishaps, but the whole thing took so long it was 4:00 PM BEFORE WE LEFT THE RESTAURANT!!! By then we were WAY ready to be somewhere else. I don't know if we'll ever go back again. I don't know if they've cut back on the "fun" aspects, but every table had ketchup bottles and on our way out we did hear a waiter say something about a "fork in the road (with a fork laying on the floor) and which way should he go." Part of the whole Disney cutback???

3/17 - 50's Prime Time Cafe for dinner. Nothing but good to say about this restaurant. The food was wonderful, the service was pretty good (the servers do have to disappear for quite a while when getting drinks - seemed to be an overall Disney occurence at most restaurants - maybe they can do something about this???). Other waiters were more entertaining, but we really enjoyed the atmosphere. Neither of us had ate here either, but had always wanted to. Our waitress was very sweet.

3/18 - Teppan Edo for dinner. It was good & filling. This is a leased restaurant so you can get Sweet & Low packets here. My DCousin was very happy. Kids menu does not include little steak choices... just chicken or shrimp. The DDP doesn't allow you to have salad or soup before dinner (our local teppenyaki restaurant gives us all these items - it's our favorite place). The cook was good, but I did witness other cooks that were more entertaining than ours. It was fine as we could watch them too. The waitress kept our drinks filled and replaced w/out any prompting. It was the BEST service we had in our whole stay.

3/19 - Cinderella's Royal Table for dinner. We enjoy this everytime and it always seems magical since you're in the castle. This was our first time to have dinner at CRT. The character experience was nice. The trivia downstairs was fun before we went up. A young couple got engaged while we were ordering and that was fantastic to see. Our waiter was very nice and fun (even though he needed more deodorant). I can't recall what I got, but it wasn't sitting well in my tummy (since I'm pregnant, I get indigestion easier & some food just isn't what I want after I get it). Our waiter offered me something else so I got the pasta. It was good. I didn't eat it all & he offered to box it up for me, but I declined. It would be nice of the mice & the fairy godmother could sign autographs, or if the godmother would slow down long enough to get a photo of her with the kids. I guess we could do w/out the mice autogrpahs, but a photo of the godmother would have been preferred. We all enjoyed our dinner, but by this time in our trip we had walked all over the parks and were tired and ready to go home. I do recommend the dinner, however.

Hmm, I think that is all. We did some counter service and this time I did not get to my favorite counter service... Flame Tree at AK. Hopefully next time!

Happy Eating all!

Thanks for the great reviews. I'm sorry about your experience at WCC. We had the exact same experience in September on our first visit and we will NOT go back (it has now joined Boatwright's and H&V as never return to).

Thanks everyone for the sweet thoughts. We enjoyed every meal and had nothing to complain about at any other restaurants. And, even with our experience at Whispering Canyon, Jack and Disney did their best to make it right. When I say I don't know if we'll ever go back... that is partly b/c there are still so many other restaurants we haven't tried yet.

KatMark - I'm suprised to see Boatwrights on your no-no list. It's one of my favorites! I love the sweet cornbread! We've stayed at Riverside twice and I love eating there... just could not fit it into this most recent trip. (What is H&V??? I'm sure I'll know as soon as you tell me...)

Thanks for the reviews - shame you did not enjoy Whispering Canyon Cafe. We've had a great lunch there but it does seem to be a bit hit or miss.
