Hello from Valparaiso, Chile, where the ship is docked overnight. Tomorrow we go by bus to Santiago.

Last week we went around Cape Horn, then went to Ushuaia, Argentina, where Mrs. Woody walked with penguins. Very cool. Actually, it was cold.

Our next port is Lima, Peru.

Sophie had a photo shoot on her 1 month-i-versary but did not smile. Her parents said she was quite concerned about the bright lights. They live in PA over 600 miles from us so we have not seen her since our Christmas-New Years week visit. My favorite photo from then is a whole face smile so I will post that. She was 2 weeks old.

Oh I love it and the dogs are beautiful too, dogs must be love with snowing!!

Thanks for checking in! When I was a little girl I wanted to live in Argentina....just because I liked the SOUND of it....and they had cowboys there too!

Here in Chicago, we call that a light dusting!

When I was living in the UK, there was a big (big for the UK) snow storm in 1991. I was living in London. I was amazed at how thing ground to a halt.

Also amazing was the notion of spreading sand, which created a lovely mixture of snow mixed with a soupçon of sand, and did nothing to remove the snow.

But it does give one a sort of beachy feeling once spring comes...

I was missing you so I signed up and joined Monica as her roomie on this cruise...can't wait to see ya.

Speaking of around the Horn, Willie is working on a class project on the Transcontinental Railroad. He told me that it used to take 6 months by boat to get to the other side of the country back in the day, then the train cut that time down to a mere 7 days of travel. Doesn't 6 months sound too long by ship even back then???

They go out and grit the roads and that has salt in which does melt ice too. Yes, it can be messy!!!

I, on the other hand, call flitting from room to room with a cloth in one hand and polish in the other a light dusting...

I believe this was the biggest snowfall since 1991...

As a great nation, we can only afford to grind to a halt every 18 years or so...

Can't explain the sand thing - unless it's supposed to enhance grip...?

I was living in London in 1991. I remember, a woman from a sandwich shop laying slices of whole grain bread down on top of the snow. She explained that the bread would soak up the snow and the grainy bits would provide traction.

OK, not one of the more conventional forms of snow removal, but I gave her full marks for creativity and ability to suspend reality.
