Rooms and Related - MIs Accepted or Denied?

For those that have gotten interviewed and selected for the MI for Rooms and Related, I ask what were your qualifications that got you in the door.

I ask because today they sent out a ton of rejections emails to people waiting on this management PI. There were a total of 5 CPs that applied from my work location and they were never called for an interview or anything either.

All 5 of them had good record cards, done very well while they had been here, 2 have their college degrees in Hospitality already, etc etc.

I am trying to put together what it is that the people in charge of this specfic PI are looking for.

Here is the specfic requirements listed for this PI.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: (These are the minimum qualifications you need to be considered for the job.)

Currently earning a college/university degree

Current College Junior or Senior

Demonstrated strong computer proficiency within a Windows environment

Demonstrated strong problem solving skills

Demonstrated strong verbal, written communication and presentation skills

Proven organization and planning skills

Demonstrated strong attention to detail

Demonstrated strong leadership ability and follow-through skills

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks

Demonstrated ability to motivate, recognize and direct Cast toward a common goal

Demonstrated strong desire to coach, mentor and develop front-line Cast Members


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior participation in the Disney Theme Parks & Resorts College Program
in a Front Desk or Housekeeping position

Minimum 6 months Resort experience

Minimum 6 months demonstrated leadership in Hospitality or related industry

Demonstrated experience in Front Office or Housekeeping environment

Demonstrated bilingual skills



Now, the only 2 required qualifications that can actually be verified, is the college requirements. Everything else cant be judged from a resume and no tests are given to see if you are really proficent at computers or have any leadership qualities.

When it comes to the desired you can see that they supposedly looking for people with a CP background and a background in hotels. These are pretty much the exact same specifications that has been listed for 2 years, with the exception of the CP no longer being required for this internship.

For the past 2 years I have been working at Disney and seen PIs come and go, and the fact is many have NO background experience in hospitality and have NO college program participation either.

*** are these people looking for? If you have been accepted for this intership, it would be helpful for those that didnt even get a shot at an interview to understand what they are lacking.

2 of the people so far accepted for this PI that I am aware of....once again have no prior hotel experience and never done a CP either. So since it seems the only real qualification you need for this job is to be a junior or senior, I...and many others are left trying to understand what they dont have that others seem to have.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I got rejected.. I was on the CP in 2005... I don't have Disney Hospitality experience, even though I wanted it for my 2005 CP.. I told my recruiter, I want that, but it was already filled by the time my school did interviews.. oh well...I was also a campus rep for 1 year ( now applying again for it), then I graduated, and I have 2 years experience in the front office, and I also have a hotel/resort mgmt degree..now although I am not currently a student, I still made it past the screening and into the phone interview..

I will most definitely re apply next year, when I am a student, and by then I hope to have my masters' in hotel-tourism mgmt... I emailed the PI hiring manager for this area, rooms and related to get feedback and get an idea of what I need to ensure a spot next time b/c it's my dream job to manage a hotel...trust me, i don't feel i am NOT qualified, on the contrary, I feel I am, even though I don't have disney hotel experience, i do have pragmatic experience in a hotel..and by the way, I also happen to be hearing impaired, even though I speak very well, my only issue is using phones, don't hear well enough to hear on that..

if/when I become Campus Rep, I am going to try to earn enough points where I can do the Dinner with Disney Exec and pick a Disney GM to have dinner with and try and win over why I should do the MI, and maybe they can put in a good word for me.. hey if it's from a Disney GM, their word means more than someone else's for this particular role.

This is exactly what I dont understand. You have done the CP, have front desk experience, and have a degree in hotel management, yet you are not selected. If you were going against someone with better qualifications, then I could understand, but at this moment, the 2 PIs we have at my work locations have none of those qualities.

You can clearly see they state they desire those with CP experience and some for front desk / hotel enviroment experience, yet why are there PIs at my work that have neither?

Friend of mine at work is finishing up his 2nd CP in hospitality and has been deployed to almost every one of Disneys Resorts and even gets calls from other front desk managers to see if he wants to pick up the shift if they have one open. He has a degree in hospitality, he is very well recieved by his management and other hotels management as well, yet he didnt even get a reply back or even so much as an interview for this position. On the same token, at least 3 people that have accepted this position for this term have no prior college program experience and have no prior resort experience either.

Thats why Im calling shenanigans on their hiring practices. They shouldnt even post required / desired qualities if its obvious it doesnt matter.

In the 2 years that I have been here, I have learned that the less experience you have, the better off you are for a management internship.

I totally understand your frustration. And even though people think your posts have been negative, I do have to say your information in the past couple of months has helped me to better prepare myself for if I didn't get picked. So, I appreciate you giving the other side of things.

I agree with my good friend Lamagique. I'm still waiting to hear about Operations Management, but reading what you've written has reiterated that the most qualified person isn't always picked. Obviously we don't work in the Intern Hiring department so we don't fully understand their selection processes, but it does seem as though a lot of wonderful people get overlooked in the selection process. I can say from personal experience though, sometimes during the interview process you can get a really good vibe from someone who isn't necessarily the most qualified and that's the person you go with. I've interviewed people who were more than qualified for a position, but they didn't interview well, or they just didn't come across as the best candidate regardless of their resume. Picking people for jobs/positions can be extremely taxing because often times you get tons of amazing applicants. It's really a fine line and ultimately it comes up to the judgment of those doing the hiring, but hopefully they're doing the best that they can and not just picking the applicants who put calls in to the right people. Anyways, good luck to all of those who are still waiting, and good luck to those who are pursuing other opportunities!

I have a simple solution, STOP DOING PHONE INTERVIEWS!!! you get more out of a face to face interview.. phone interviews prove nothing except that we can give very good answers.. some of their questions, anyone can answer them the way the interviewer probably wants to hear.. but in person interviews can be more beneficial.. i mean hell.. how would disney know if someone on the other line can "adhere" to the disney look? if they find out at the last minute, too bad, disney won't have time to find someone else..

I'd actually have to agree about the no phone interviews only part. After my 2nd interview I kept asking my interviewers whether or not there'd be another portion of interviewing. They didn't understand what I meant until I flat out said "Do I need to go down there for a face to face interview?" It seemed logical to me that you should meet the person you want to hire.. I guess maybe it costs too much to fly every potential applicant down there? I dunno

I'd fly myself down there, spend a week on vacation and do a job interview at the same time.. they wouldn't pay people to fly people down there..I know I can show my enthusiam for working for disney better face to face than on the phone.

Most large corporations actually fly their applicants down to the location to have a face to face interview. I know Microsoft, Google, and Facebook do.. but that's only cause I live near their offices. I figured Disney would as well but maybe not..

Disney Great Leader Strategies Rule #3 of 12: Make Sure You Have the Right People in the Right Roles!

I think it really depends on the position that they're trying to fill... higher positions and positions that last for more than 6 months, yes...fly them down, or even for executive level positions fly up and see their operation... for those kinds of jobs the $400 plane ticket is much cheaper than a hiring problem later on.

But for these PIs... so many candidates=so many interviews=so much time and it's better just to make the best judgements with some phone interviews and if you really screw up, the mistake will take care of itself in 6 months.

Not saying it's the best way, just trying to consider why it might be like that.

That makes sense, though. I figured as much, too.. Disney interviews hundreds of PIs every 6 months and flying them all down would make quite the hefty bill!

Heres my issue though.

There are a ton of well qualified people for this professional internship here at Disney doing the CP....at this very minute.

There is no need to fly people down, or spend insame amount of resources on recruiting when you have plenty of people here that are just as qualified, if not more so, than those coming down here now.

The desired qualifications should be removed from this PI, point blank and period. I only work at one resort now where 5 CPs applied for the internship, yet were never even contacted period. According to Disney, they want people with CP experience, front desk experience, hospitality experience etc, yet why were these people never contacted?

There are people that have accepted this PI and have never worked at Disney and have no related job experience at all, yet they were selected

Since I work here, I intend on going to professional recruiting very soon and trying to get to the bottom of this, not for myself, but for the countless disappointed CP people here now.

This is precisely why I hate the CP program. They recruit you by telling you everything you want to hear, and then learn it was all garbage. 5 of the 6 PIs from my resort have never done the CP and had no related experience in hospitality, while there are 3 CPs on the program now that have their bachelors degrees and well over 1 year experience at Disney and its resorts...with flawless record cards and the support of the resorts general manager, yet they dont even get a call???

Its straight garbage when someone with no experience or anything gets the job over someone that comes here and does exactly what they are told to do in order to have a leg up in the company. A person is much better off not doing a CP, as opposed to doing a CP when it comes to any advancement within the company.

It's interesting to see how this process goes each time around. When my boyfriend was applying for PIs he didn't hear anything so he just did another CP. While there he applied again and was actually contacted for a nearly all of them (which is interesting because his qualifications expanded a small amount with his new work role at Disney.) He was able to interview for a number of them in person, but even though he was so close he still did phone interviews. Luckily he got a PI. Hopefully more CP alumni can be as lucky.

Sometimes life isn't fair. But I think the best thing to do is just dust yourself off and try again. The worst thing you could do is complain a lot to professional recruitment. They are the ones you are trying to woo. Honey is a lot more affective than vinegar, as momma always says.

I dont care about it anymore to be honest, I just continue to work for the company for park admission and discounts and have a much better paying job for full time. My girlfriend was also on the program and now makes almost triple what she did doing the same job away from Disney.

What I do care about is all the people that come down here and believe what the recruiters say, only to find out they its nothing like it is supposed to be.

It irratates me to no end to see all my fellow CP coworkers get lied to repeatedly and actually be at a disadvantage for a PI because they did the college program.
