Question Hot New Photography Toys?

Back in the glory days when Mark B. and Jeff F. were posting all the time, it seems like they shared the hot new toys around here.

I'm curious...what do you all view as the hot photography gadgets and gear for this season? I've been told I need to start putting together my Christmas list, and would love to steal some ideas from you all.

Hmm... well I'm a Sony user so I've been watching the new Full Frame NEX camera. Seems people like it so that will probably sell well during the holiday season. As far as Sonys go there are two new A-Mount bodies that are to be released "early next year," a 24MP APS-C replacement of the A77 and a 36MP Full Frame replacement of the A99. Given the tech improvements Sony has made in the past two years or so a refreshed A77 or A99 would make for nice upgrades for Sony shooters. I can hear the new A77 calling my name...

Personally, I have a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 on preorder so I'm just waiting for that to ship. Otherwise I've already blown through my photography budget long before the holiday season. :P

The "hot" Sony holiday item will be the Sony A7/7r.... Though I'm not switching mounts. I will tip my hat to the technology and the cameras.

Anyone care to aim a little lower? Not sure how many relatives of mine would be interested in buying me a full frame camera.

Well how much do your relatives love you? Do they love you enough for a new lens?

Hmm... I know nothing about new/up-and-coming Nikon equipment. However I would recommend the Holdfast Money Maker camera harness system. It's a piece of equipment that is practical, very well made, and has definite "cool" factor (Like if Indiana Jones carried a camera instead of a Webley revolver). I bought one of these and took it to the parks and it was a hit! Got a many compliments on it and had a lot of people ask where to get one. Two readily accessible camera bodies was nice, with the option of a third. Of course you'll have to pack light unless you want to wear your camera pack over it.

Tom,

What about these?
http://www.lightingrumours.com/yongn...s-add-lcd-4731

I picked up the version that is out right now for my canon system. They retain ETTL for a fraction of the price of PocketWizards. I purchased them to use off camera flash for baby photography but they may have some interesting uses with you Disney or National Park photography.

The Nikon versions should be out in Dec.

Not new at all but my husband is having a lot of fun playing with manual prime lenses on our Sony dslr I have found some great buys on ebay on a few lenses. Now I am shopping for new camera bag to hold all the new lenses, it will cost far more than the lenses

The sony A77 is on my wishlist.

How about software?
I've been beta testing OnOne Perfect Photo Studio 8 -- being released in November. It's pretty nifty.

I was initially really excited about the RX100 but it seems that it was an interesting idea that was poorly executed (just like Sony's new a3000).

The rx100 is very well executed. You mean the qx100?

Interesting stuff, guys. I really do need to get ahold of some new lighting toys. Every year I tell myself this is the year I'm going to learn lighting, and every year I fail. 2014 is my year!!!

As for the QX100...it's awful. But sounds like some of you already know my opinion on it!
