Purchasing DVC with non-Disney Spouse

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had ever been in my situation. I'm planning on purchasing a small resale DVC contract within the next 6 months. I haven't yet decided where to buy-- but to start out I'm probably only looking at 100 points. My daughter and I (she's 11) usually go to WDW together (although we've only been once, staying offsite at Hilton Bonnet Creek, and this time we're staying at Yacht Club). My husband is fine with the purchase as long as I pay in cash and I pay off a small balance on our credit cards first. BUT I'm seeing all those posts about the whole family being on board with Disney, and he just isn't. But he's only been to Epcot for a senior trip in the early 90s and doesn't remember anything about it. What do you think the chances are he converts? Not into a fanatic, but into someone who at least would enjoy himself? Any converts out there?? Although my daughter and I could use it exclusively, he told me that if we buy in he's coming with us (we will probably do two trips a year of 3 and 4 days each). It's sort of like getting his money's worth at an all-you-can-eat-buffet-- he may not think the food's that great, but by gosh he's going to eat his money's worth. Yeah, he's that guy. I just don't want to think I'm forcing him (even indirectly) to do something he'd hate. So I'm hoping for stories from reluctant Disney spouses who turned into excited DVC owners. I also have very young grandchildren, so eventually I'm hoping to add to the points and vacation with them. Again, he says he is fine with this idea. I was thinking of taking him during F&W and maybe he'd develop more enthusiasm? Any other suggestions welcome.

I am a single parent when it comes to Disney. My husband didn't grow up Disney like we did. He's only been once as a kid. He can take it or leave it.

I go almost every year with my sister and parents. And now I bring my son. So I'm the one buying DVC. Maybe he'll come with us, but I'm buying a smaller contract assuming that some trips may be just me and my son. I think that's A-OK!

yeah, that's probably the way it will end up--with me as a single disney parent. ha.

I took a "girls" trip with our two daughters last October and they came home talking non stop about how much fun they had and how great our stay was. Well, we went as a family this past February and my husband LOVED it. Now he's asking when we can go back and who we can take and how many VGF points we should buy....

Long story short, it took years of offering him the Kool aid before he would drink it and now he loves it. I think owning DVC has a lot to do with it because it is a different kind of vacation when you can rest and relax in a larger space and still enjoy the parks, the pools and all that Disney offers.

I think it's great that your husband is ok with buying DVC - let him go on those trips and let the Disney work its magic at his own pace.

That is awesome! And exactly what I was hoping to hear. The last time my daughter and I went we only had 3 park days. We did AK twice, HS once, and Epcot twice AND Universal. We nixed MK because my dad leaves near DLR and we wanted to see stuff we hadn't seen there. So the idea of a slower pace is appealing to all of us. And although my points will only manage a studio, we can use the kitchenette for sure.

How close is he to your DD? For many non-Disney parents, just seeing their children light up when they are there is enough to convert them.

In our household it is the opposite. I am the one that pushed for the DVC membership. DW was not keen on the idea at first, but once I convinced her that we did not have to use our points at WDW every year, she was on board. She even has learned to love Disney, but I think it is more about how much DD and I enjoy ourselves when we are there.

My DH is similar. He doesn't like to vacation in general - I take all my Disney trips (and most of my other vacations too!) with my sister and/or parents. I bought DVC last year and DH was fine with it - we are taking our first trip together this October! I think he is looking forward to it but will never be "extreme" like me.

I know some people think it's weird to vacation without your spouse, but it if makes you happy and he doesn't mind, I say go for it! Maybe you will make him a convert to the world of Disney !

Made me laugh about the senior trip (been there... not with him, but been there)

I'd say the F&W will help significantly with the convert part of your equation. There is so much that Disney offers to the adult crowd, you likely know his interests, and I bet there will be SOMETHING there that touches his.

The race car track got me and the F&W will keep me coming back!!!
