Star Wars in 3D re-releases indefinitely delayed

I saw this today and thought it should be mentioned.

The mouse makes its first stamp on the faltering brand.

Thank god...disney was wise to pull the plug on its own 3D treatments...as they weren't financially lucrative and they also cheapen the product with circus sideshow tricks.

now this announcement about star wars was GREAT news. another in the 30 year string of cheap stunts from lucas/mccallum to squeeze water from the same rock.

and lets face it...the last thing disney wants is to have to trot out the bad last 3 movies and try to wedge them down our throats for a few cheap bucks. they were horrid and should be sent to boarding school in the mountains like any problem child.

Lucas was cool with it...more money for flannel shirts.

~I'm so tired of these 3D re-releases, make it stop! I'm so glad the public rejected that trend, even though I really wanted to see The Little Mermaid. Anyway, just keep on making those fabulous *new* releases, Hollywood!

~Also, I have changed my mind about JJ Abrams. I saw the trailer for ~Star Trek 2: Into Darkness , I don't like Star Trek, but the movie looks awesome, with lots of action! So, we'll see!!!

While I may be one of the few, I am actually a little upset at this news. Now, it's not that I like 3D. To be honest, I, with rare exception, refuse to pay the extra $4 a ticket for what is nothing but a cheap, hokey, parlor trick. FYI: in spite of being a huge Tolkien fan, we saw the Hobbit in 2D! But, DS(12) has always been a huge SW fan and, because of his age, he was too young to see any of the films in theater. While I hated shelling out the additional cash to Lucas & the theaters, we went to see Episode I when it was released (or re-released actually) - not because of the 3D, but simply so he could see the film in the theaters. Even you hate 3D and paying the outrageous cost of admission/food/etc, there is something to be said for seeing an epic film on the big screen with the mega sound system rattling your bones. If only Lucas left poor puppet Yoda alone, it would have been a near perfect experience.

I took DS7 to the "Phantom Menace 3D" and both of us were extremely disappointed. It was simply a shoddy job, and the addition of 3D in places where it worked poorly spotlighted the fact that they failed to use 3D where it might actually work.

To wit, the biggest use of 3D was to take the live-action set-shot scenes and force a little depth onto them by adjusting the apparent distance from the actors to the background and adding in some CGI elements at different depth levels... but they're still all in front of the 2D matte painting which is painfully obvious! Meanwhile, the one aspect of the film that could really have benefited from a 3D upgrade -- namely, the large-scale CGI combat sequences -- were still 2D.

I felt ripped off, and I was using a free ticket (comp from a previous visit to the theater where they had projection problems).

I for one am disappointed by this news. I'm not big on 3D but I was looking forward to taking DS to see the original trilogy on the big screen.

I've also heard reports Disney is taking The Clone Wars off Cartoon Network and onto a Disney station. These two moves right on top of each other is not endearing Disney to the Star Wars diehards. They were already leery of Disney buying Lucas Film and doing these two moves right after closing the deal isn't helping.

As a fellow Star Wars diehard, I respectfully disagree. I was excited that Disney purchased the Star Wars rights, and I am glad the 3D abomination has been stopped. While I entirely understand your desire to take your DS to see the trilogy on the big screen, I wouldn't call a 3D butchering of it in any way "original". Even the Special Editions released in the 90s was a failure IMHO. I'm looking forward to seeing more NEW material, not rehashing and destroying something that was already good - or in the cases of Episodes 1-3: Pretty uninspiring.

As for the Clone Wars potentially moving of Cartoon Network: eh - as long as they don't pull the show entirely, I don't care which of my 1200 channels its on. As long as I can find it!

Howard is a Marvel Comics character. So Disney could probably do a sequel if they wanted. Assuming the movie rights aren't tied up.

But who cares about the "Star Wars Diehards"? to be honest (and i've been a lifelong supporter without wearing costumes to comic con).
They have continued to prop up what basically has been 15 years of bad product and allowed crazy George to erode all mainstream support.

The original movies were a smashing phenomenon because EVERYBODY liked them...not just goobers with space catalogues.

Disney has to try to get back to that or the future is not so bright for the Jedi.

And i love your take on the special editions...in the case of the ending of Empire, they broke up what his from a musical standpoint one of the greatest sequences in any of their movies (this one being best) to insert useless CGI. It was pointless...as was the tinkering in the beginning of Star Wars (eye bulging Jabba, Greedo shooting first) and the end of Return of the Jedi (thanks for the scenes from "new exciting worlds to come" that turned out to be not too exciting in the bad movies to follow). So they shook money out of our pockets to "WoW' everyone into the new movies...but meanwhile the Matrix hit theaters two months before the "Phantom Movie" and trumped it in technical in pretty much every way...or came close enough that it didn't matter.

To say nothing of the horribly bad storylines and dialogue...even bringing solid, accomplished actors down with it.

I saw the 3D movies as a chance for Lucas Film to cash in on the 3D craze. Only reason I was even thinking of going to see the original trilogy again was to take DS. If Disney were to leak that they were going to show the films again before Episode VII I would be happy and I'm sure many of the others who are venting on FB would back off. I liked the first re-release of the original trilogy, with the exception of Greedo shooting first. Then they kept messing with them and the magic of the original trilogy got lost.

From what I've heard the speculation is the Clone Wars will continue but will be on Disney XD which is not as available as CN. I know I don't have it and I have a pretty good plan on Xfinity.

I think it was actually the vociferous criticism from the life long fans like you and me that ticked George off enough to declare he would not make another trilogy. I completely agree that episodes I and II stunk. Episode III was well done but by then the damage had been done. So far, Disney has done a good job setting up the new movies for success. They hired a solid writer and a director who was on just about everyone's short list. You said you don't care about the diehards but Disney should. Those are the ones who buy the toys, clothes, games, books, and other stuff. If Disney wants to make a return on their investment keeping the fans happy is the best way to do it. I'm not saying they should do anything big. Just say they'll release the old movies before the new film, put TCW on DC or ABCF instead of XD.

We just might be defining "diehard" differently. I'm not a costumer, I didn't name my daughter Leia, and I only have 3 pieces of Star Wars Memorabelia (the gorgeous poster set by print-maker Ollie Moss). I do however have the ability to recite the original trilogy straight through with probably a handful of mistakes. I'm a huge fan of the OG trilogy - I enjoyed many of the book series, Clone Wars is a really fun kids-level entry into the Star Wars Universe that has tremendous legs IMHO in terms of what they can do with it.

All that said, I do not acknowledge Eps 1-3 as part of the Star Wars lore. They are nothing to me. If you mean diehard as in "those who unconditionally love EVERYTHING Star Wars oriented" then yes - to heck with 'em I say! But I don't think those are the people who really love the material; they're just sheep. If you love it, you're not afraid to criticize it. Like my wife. I criticize her all the time! Either way, I think there's a tremendous potential here, and I'm hopeful that the powers-that-be recognized 3Dification for the rancor (pun super-intended) that it could cause, along with the non-profitability.

DS is going to be hugely bummed. Ep 2 was his favorite and I just told him a couple of weeks ago that the 3D version was going to be released on his birthday. As a prior poster mentioned, the excitement probably wasn't so much about 3D as the opportunity to share the experience in a theater.
