My advice is to find a location or theme that interests you and go for it. Take a long weekend and tourist a little and run a little. I've enjoyed every race I've done for different reasons.

Little rock is known for having the biggest medal and it's a flat course

I've done the shamrock 8k in Virginia beach, I've also done the wicked 10k. JA racing who puts both I those on does a really good Job. They also have a 14k over valentines day.
I've run the myrtle beach mini 2 years in a row. The course is flat and fast. They are changing the course for 2013 so that you spend more time on the boardwalk. There are several races on the outerbanks. I've run the flying pirate half and liked the course a lot. They have the option to run a 5k the day before an you get an extra medal. The 5k goes over the Wright bros memorial. It's a really neat run and it's cheap to rent a house out there for the weekend.

I just found out that the Valley to Sea half marathon will be in Maui this year, while I'll be there. I think I'm going to sign up for that one. It's all downhill and the last half mile is run on the beach. It should be fun and also a good warmup for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon this year.

I've done the Maui 1/2 Marathon in September (get to see a lot of ocean
)Also, the Nike Women's 1/2 in San Francisco was nice. Great views during the run and a Tiffany necklace at the end. Gotta love those firemen! One race I haven't done yet, but hope to in the next few years is the 1/2 marathon in Anchorage, Alaska.

Thinking even bigger, doing a race anywhere in New Zealand would be simply fantastic. Out of all the non-Disney places we've been, that's the one we're convinced we'll go back to someday.

Of note for Christchurch, when we were there in March the entire downtown area was still totally fenced off and demolishing of buildings looked like it was going to be going on for quite some time due to the earthquake damage. It was a sad sight to see. Obviously if they're holding the race they've either made progress since then or found a way around it, but of all the New Zealand cities we visited unfortunately that was our least favorite.
